Our deepest thanks go to PSY for his inspiration of this film, to Bob Stern for his masterful production, to God for the written material, and to YouTube, for giving us a forum for ridiculousness.

The Present and Future of Swiss Jewry (pt. 1)

23.01.2014

Speaker: Simon Erlanger
Date: July 17, 2007
The Present and Future of Swiss Jewry

There are today some 18,000 Jews in Switzerland, the same number as in 1900, whereas the general population has doubled since then. A policy of systematic exclusion by Swiss authorities has helped to hold numbers down in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Assimilation and emigration, mainly to Israel, have reduced the Jewish population long after the policy ended. Today Swiss Jewry is faced with demographic decline existing in an environment, which has not proven friendly in recent decades. Its continued future is far from guaranteed.

Dr. Simon Erlanger is a journalist and historian. His doctorate from Basel University deals with the Second World War Swiss Labor Camp system and transmigration. He was born in Switzerland in 1965 and was educated in Basel and Jerusalem. A former employee of the Yad Vashem Archives in Jerusalem, he presently teaches Jewish history at the University of Lucerne. He also works as an editor for Telebasel, a television station for northwestern Switzerland.
