Mstislav Leopoldovitch Rostropovich, em russo Мстисла́в Леопо́льдович Ростропо́вич, (27 de Março de 1927, Baku — 27 de Abril de 2007, Moscovo) foi um violoncelista e maestro russo (tendo-se mais tarde naturalizado americano), unanimimente apontado como o maior violoncelista do século XX.

Nasceu no Azerbaijão, parte então da União Soviética. Ainda quanto era muito pequeno, a sua família muda-se para Moscou. Estudou no conservatório da capital (do qual mais tarde seria docente) tendo como professores, entre outros, Dmitri Shostakovitch e Serguei Prokofiev.

Estreou diversas obras para violoncelo dos principais compositores contemporâneos, como a ‘Sinfonia concertante em mi menor, opus 125’ de Serguei Prokofiev, os dois concertos para violoncelo de Dmitri Shostakovich e as Sinfonia para violoncelo e Sonata para violoncelo e piano de Benjamin Britten.

Rostropovich lutou por uma arte sem fronteiras, pela liberdade de expressão e pelos valores democráticos, resultando em reprimendas por parte do regime soviético comunista. Em 1974, Rostropovich fugiu da então URSS devido à sua defesa intransigente dos direitos humanos e ao seu apoio a figuras dissidentes, como o escritor Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Em 1978 acabaria por ver a sua cidadania na União Soviética revogada devido à sua oposição ao regime.
