Daf Yomi Kolel Happy Hour

Bons estudos!

Faux Filet Mignon Kosher with all the Tricks & Tips

22.08.2013
Some call it the godfather of steaks, Filet Mignon. But in the kosher world you’re hard pressed to find it. Now, thanks to KOL Foods (KOLFoods.com) and Avi’s Kosher Kitchen, we’ve got the kosher world covered. We take Kol Foods, 100% grass-fed, pasture raised Delmonico Steak, wrap it in their no nitrate beef fry and create a mouth watering delight.

In my opinion the meat is wagu quality, soft, richly marbled and melt in your mouth. Serve with crispy onion rings or with fresh greens. No matter what, the star of the show will be this great steak.

BTW: Want to see more tips check out the short version of this recipe here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl2K_B…

How Kosher Israeli Falafel is Prepared [HD] | איך להכין פלאפל ישראלי כשר

30.05.2013
Ah, Falafel. One of the most common ethnic foods synonymous with Israeli culture. Every neighborhood in Jerusalem seems to have at least one ‘falafel stop’ where locals either gather over lunch or run by and take a quick portion of the delicious fried balls to go. No matter if you like it without ‘harif’ (hot & spicy) or ‘im chips’ (french fries) – enjoy this video with hummus, tehina, and Israeli salad!

Tzimmes – Jewish carrot dish

15.04.2009
Mr. Hebrew makes Tzimmes. The expression “Dont make tzimmes out of it” (a big deal) isn’t really true when you use Neal’s preparation method.

Wikipedia definition: Tzimmes or tsimmes (Yiddish, Hebrew: צימעס) is a traditional Jewish dish in which the principal ingredient is diced or sliced carrots, sometimes combined with dried fruits like prunes or raisins, or chunks of meat (usually brisket or flanken). The dish is cooked slowly over low heat and flavored with honey and sometimes cinnamon. The variations are endless. The non-meat version tends to be sweeter, along the lines of candied yams.

Tzimmes is often part of the Rosh Hashanah meal, when it is traditional to eat sweet and honey-flavored dishes.

The name may come from the German words zum (for) and essen (eating). Some say the word is a corruption of the word ‘simmer.’ “To make a big tzimmes over something” means to make a big fuss.

A Life Apart: Hasidism in America – Part 1 – 9

18.03.2012
Hasidic Jews seem alien, and even hostile, to those outside their culture, which frequently includes other Jews. They dress differently, don’t mingle between the sexes, speak Yiddish, and wear side curls, all in an attempt to rigorously follow the commandments of the Torah. They tend to keep to themselves, shunning television and the media so outside influences cannot corrupt their values and views. Yet filmmakers Oren Rudavsky and Menachem Daum were able to enter their world, and the result is the fascinating documentary A Life Apart: Hasidism in America. Using interviews with academics and members of the community and some historical footage, the filmmakers trace the growth of Hasidic groups in the United States. Groups formed around particular Rebbes (learned leaders) and they took their names from their Eastern European home cities (the Satmar Hasids, the Breslov Hasids, and so on). Leonard Nimoy and Sarah Jessica Parker narrate, explaining how this movement came to America and how it was able to flourish. Dissenting voices also appear, in the form of neighborhood people who are distressed at the Hasids’ refusal to speak to members not in their community and of a young woman, Pearl Gluck, who left the community in order to pursue her writing and to follow a life of her own choosing. Many Hasids refuse to speak on camera, and we see many shielding themselves with hands or coats so as not to appear on film. But those who do appear are poignant in their discussions of why the Hasidic life is important to them. One man speaks to the directors, even as he acknowledges that he will never see the movie, but he will do it “in order to help a Jew make a living.” One couple, Holocaust survivors, are not Hasidic, but their children are, and the reasonings of both the parents and the children are interesting. This film, shown on PBS, is a consequential look into a lifestyle many of us don’t understand, and it may help in increasing an understanding.

Jewish Documentary – Full Film

21.04.2009
http://JewishHistory.org Faith and Fate is a documentary telling the story of the Jews in the 20th Century.

The first Episode is called, “The Dawn of the Century” and covers 1900 – 1910.

This episode introduces the uniqueness of Jewish history in the 20th century within the
context of world history. At the turn of the 20th century, Jews were scattered across the
globe, representing only ¼ of one percent of the worlds population. It was a time of
empires, imperial rule and colonial expansionism. In Russia the masses, including the
Jews, lived in dire poverty which was compounded by grassroots antisemitism. In 1905
the Russian masses revolted and there was a general strike. On Bloody Sunday the
Czar responded with force. The Czar did not abdicate until 1917, which is typically the
date given for the second Russian Revolution, which, in turn, led to increased pogroms
against the Jews. The pogroms and the economic conditions forced approximately
40% of Jewish population to leave the Russian Empire and go to Western countries
including the United States and to Palestine and other countries as far away as South
Africa and Australia.

Emigration and the Enlightenment presented Jews with the dilemma and opportunity to
maintain or reject their traditional Jewish upbringing, and many decided to forgo their
traditional Judaism and blend in with their larger non-Jewish society. Within the
traditional Jewish world, change was occurring as well, with the rise and acceptance of
the Mussar Movement, an ethical approach to Judaism. Because Jews were not
allowed into institutions of higher education in Eastern Europe, most of them went to
study in yeshivas to sharpen their intellect. The traditional yeshiva, unintentionally,
became a breeding ground for all philosophies, Jewish and secular alike. Zionism
grew as a national movement, and was led by secular Jews antithetical to traditional
Judaism. While most rabbis rejected Zionism and its leaders, because of their
nontraditional beliefs, a minority of rabbis developed religious Zionism, which combined
traditional Judaism with Zionist philosophy. The Old Yishuv Jews, who had settled in
Palestine in the late 1800s, were committed to traditional Judaism and rejected
secular, nationalistic ideas of the New Yishuv Zionists.

The Sephardic Jews living in Moslem and Arab countries at the turn of the 20th
Century maintained their own rich Jewish traditions and heritage, which often differed
from those of the Ashkenazim. There was relative peace within the Jewish community
and among the leadership in these Arab and Moslem countries, and although life was
sometimes difficult, these Sephardic Jews did not experience, by and large, pogroms
or the influences of the Enlightenment or Reform Judaism.

In Europe, Jews were the leaders of the Labor and Socialist movements and
spearheaded the establishment of labor unions in America. The challenge of
assimilation in the United States was the greatest difficulty confronting Jewish
immigrants. Attempts were made to stem the tide. Reform Judaism became a symbol
of acceptance into modern American society and Dr. Solomon Schechter initiated the
Universal Synagogue movement which became Conservative Judaism. Also
Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish immigrants had to find their respective places within
the Jewish community and in their new host country, the United States, as well..
A small, strong group of American Jewish immigrants managed to cling to their Jewish
traditions and adapt themselves to the new reality in America. Meanwhile, for Jews
around the world, with the threat of WWI looming, the imperial race for supremacy was
escalating

The Story of the Jews with Simon Schama

STAND WITH ISRAEL

SRAEL is the historic homeland of the Jewish people. God gave that land to the descendants of Abraham and Sarah, who are the Jews. The Bible says he’ll never break that covenant: Judges 2:1 “I brought you unto the land which I swore unto your fathers; and I said, I will Never break my covenant with you”. God set forth what he had done for Israel, and what he had promised.

The Keshet documentary is a Canadian-Israeli co-production presented by Israeli anchorman Ya’akov Eilon. The binational cooperation enabled Canadian journalists to interview people that Israelis would not have had access to, such as Alex Linder, the owner and operator of the viciously anti-Semitic, white supremacist Vanguard News Network.

The filmmakers document what they describe as “new Anti-Semitism” through the use of hidden cameras in conferences, demonstrations and behind the scenes of anti-Zionist meetings across the globe.

Filmmaker and director Martin Himel told The Jerusalem Post that the primary objective of the documentary is to present “Anti-Semitism in action,” to allow viewers to feel what it means and to acknowledge that is exists.

“My goal was not so much to explain it [Anti-Semitism] or to describe how people suffer. For me it was more important to say, ‘Here is the new Anti-Semitism, take a look and see it for what it is,'” he clarified.

The director pointed to comparisons of Jews with Nazis and the use of terms such as “genocide,” “extinction” and extermination” when discussing Israel as examples of contemporary Anti-Semitism. He also cited claims that Jews control Hollywood, the banks and the media as examples.

He was keen, however, to point out the difference between being critical of Israel and being anti-Semitic, saying that the former conversely includes language such as “occupation,” “annexation of territories” and “settlements.” Himel also flagged lobbies such as Occupy AIPAC, which he charged with disguising Anti-Semitism with anti-Zionism. The documentary “pulls the pants down on people who say ‘I’m anti- Zionist, not an anti-Semite,'” Himel told the Post… http://www.jpost.com/JewishWorld/Jewi…

Book Talk

Eliyahu Stern, Yale University
Jeremy Dauber, Columbia University (Moderator)

The beginnings of contemporary Jewry are often associated with Jewish figures in Western Europe such as Moses Mendelssohn. But in his book, ‘The Genius: Elijah of Vilna and the Making of Modern Judaism,’ Eliyahu Stern offers a new and provocative narrative for understanding contemporary Jewish life, which begins in the East, with the leading East European mystic and rabbinic scholar of the 18th century, Elijah ben Solomon, or the “Vilna Gaon.” Eliyahu Stern joined in conversation with Jeremy Dauber for a discussion about the Vilna Gaon, his influence on modern Judaism, and why his legacy has been claimed by traditionalists, enlighteners, Zionists and the Orthodox.

· Winner of the 2012 Samuel and Ronnie Heyman Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Publication
· Finalist for the 2013 Sami Rohr Prize in Jewish Literature

Eliyahu Stern was the Tell fellow at the YIVO Institute in 2004.

The Jews in Poland-Lithuania and Russia: 1350 to the Present Day

12.03.2014

Book Talk

Antony Polonsky, Brandeis University

For centuries, Poland and Russia formed the heartland of the Jewish world. Until World War II, this area was home to over forty percent of world Jewry: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland, and nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of American and European Jews originate from Eastern Europe, the history of this life and civilization is not well known, or has been reduced to a story of persecution and martyrdom. In his masterful three-volume history, ‘The Jews in Poland and Russia: 1350 to the Present Day’, Polonsky avoids sentimentalism and mythologizing, and provides a comprehensive and detailed account of this great civilization. From the towns and shtetls where Jews lived, to the emergence of Hasidism and the Haskalah movement, to the rise of Jewish urbanization, and Polish-Jewish relations during World War II, Polonsky’s book dispels myths about this culture, while demonstrating the importance of Poland and Russia as a great center of Jewish life.

Winner of the 2011 Kulczycki Book Prize for Polish Studies, and the Pro Historia Polonorum Prize for the best book on the history of Poland published in a foreign language between 2007 and 2011.

ESSAY: Tasting Life’s Bitter Waters

Tasting Life’s Bitter Waters
Iyar 28, 5774 · May 28, 2014
On the significance of the “ishah sotah”

You are married, or intensely committed, to a vision, a goal, a dream. You are devoted to this vision because you know it will make the world a better place for yourself and everyone else. You believe that regardless of the effort it takes, following through with this goal will ultimately make your life more fulfilling, more altruistic, loftier.

Then along comes life. And with it the ups and downs, the challenges and the obstacles.

You’re not sure of the cause, but at some point you find that you have swerved from your path, strayed from your morals. It might have been restlessness or boredom with the monotony of the day-to-day minutiae. Or perhaps it was a spirit of impulsiveness, a rebellion against the swerves that life has thrown you.

Maybe you can be blamed for losing your vision and forgoing your ideals. Or maybe you couldn’t ever have been expected to rise above the harsh circumstances of your life.

Whatever the case, you wake up one morning to the realization that you have changed. You are no longer leading the life that you had always believed you would. You have strayed from your moral vision. You have betrayed your dream.

You may ask yourself:

If I do change paths now, what will be the end result?

Is there a path of return? Do I want to take it? Are the costs too high? Is it worth the effort? If I do change paths now, what will be the end result? Will I ever fully succeed?

Common wisdom, laced with its jaded cynicism, says there’s no turning back the clock. Move on with life, leave your childish idealism behind and face the reality of adulthood. Life is not a bed of roses; you need to look out for yourself and your needs. Forget your lofty ideals; a path of sacrifice is not where you will find fulfillment. And anyways, once you have already veered off the path, it can never be the same. It’s simply too late.

Torah wisdom, of course, asserts the opposite.

This week’s Torah reading discusses the law of the ishah sotah, the “wayward wife” who is suspected of adultery.

Moralists see the story of the ishah sotah as expressing the sanctity and holiness of marriage in Judaism.

Others see G‑d’s willingness to erase His holy name for the sake of marital harmony as an indication of the importance of peace between man and wife, and amongst mankind in general.

It is a question here of simple existence, whether the marriage will or will not continue

Kabbalists see the story as a cosmic metaphor of the “marriage” between G‑d and the “wayward” Jewish people, who are tested and eventually exonerated through the “bitter waters” of exile.

But perhaps we can also see, in the story of thesotah, a promising lesson for each of us in the personal sojourns of our own lives.

Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: Should any man’s wife go astray and deal treacherously with him,

and a man lie with her carnally, but it was hidden from her husband’s eyes, but she was secluded [with the suspected adulterer] and there was no witness against her . . . (Numbers 5:12–13)

The ishah sotah is labeled a wayward wife because she has “strayed,” deviated from the prescribed moral road, even if she has not been implicated in actual adultery. Her husband has warned her in the presence of two witnesses not to seclude herself with her suspected lover. She has ignored this warning. Her behavior prevents the marriage from being permitted to continue.

At this point, the husband or the wife can decide to terminate the marriage, without any admittance of guilt. Neither the husband nor the wife can be forced to have the test of the bitter waters.1

But should they wish to resume their marriage, the suspecting husband brings his wife to the Holy Temple, where the kohen enacts the ceremony of the bitter waters. The husband then brings an offering for his wife, making it clear that he wishes to continue the marriage should his wife be vindicated.2

The offering consists of unsifted, coarse barley flour, the commonest grain, without the oil or incense that accompany other grain offerings. It is a question here of simple existence, whether the marriage will or will not continue. An animal food—barley—is brought to signify the wife’s questionable moral standing: even if her guilt has not reached the point of actual adultery, she has veered from the pure path and followed her animalistic instincts.

The kohen shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and some earth from the floor of the Mishkan, the kohen shall take and put into the water.

Then the kohen shall stand the woman up before the L‑rd, and uncover the [hair on the] head of the woman . . .3

He shall then give the bitter, curse-bearing waters to the woman to drink, and the curse-bearing waters shall enter her to become bitter. (Numbers 5:17–18, 24)

Relevant passages from the Torah were written on a scroll and dissolved in the “curse-bearing waters.” The name of G‑d appeared in these passages, and in the process it would be erased. If the woman was guilty of actual adultery, the waters would cause her an accursed death.4 If not, she would be blessed with offspring, and her marriage would enjoy a newfound commitment and happiness.5

But since the ishah sotah had strayed from the proper path—even if she had not actually committed adultery—why was she blessed so abundantly?

The ishah sotah, like each of us struggling with the vicissitudes of our own lives, has never really entirely strayed

Because in truth, the ishah sotah, like each of us struggling with the vicissitudes of our own lives, has never really entirely strayed. We are still “married” to our ideals and vision, since they are so much a part of our soul. We simply need to be reunited with our true, inner self.

Like the ishah sotah on her path of exoneration and return, this takes effort. It takes strength of character. It might involve humiliation or sacrifice. But if our resolve is firm enough, if our character is up to the challenge, if we persevere in what we know is true and right, ultimately we will succeed.

G‑d stands at our side. Once we have demonstrated our commitment, He will defend us, even allowing His own name and honor to be “erased” while assisting us in our endeavor.

Moreover, not only will we succeed at realigning our own life to what it was originally, but our commitment and the fruits of our commitment will be more productive and more blessed, leading to greater yields and to a more mature relationship with ourselves and with our world.

Because we haven’t just returned to what we were. We have grown through the process.

True growth is not about only persevering on one straight path. Only after tasting of the bitter waters of life, only after struggling and stumbling and standing up against the darker forces of our world, does one become a greater, more courageous and enriched human being. Only after straying and then rebounding are we driven with a stronger yearning for inner unity and divine life. Only after experiencing the darkness of life’s night and the desolation of its winters do we attain an even more intense and meaningful bond with G‑d.

The lesson of the ishah sotah to each of us, man or woman, is that though our path may be a difficult and twisted one, when we victoriously face down the wearying struggles and tempting choices we emerge as greater individuals, and as a redeemed people, in a redeemed world.

ETHICS OF OUR FATHERS: Manna Eaters (Chapter 6)

Manna Eaters
————

This is the way of Torah:  Bread with salt you shall eat, water in small measure you shall drink, and upon the ground you shall sleep; live a life of deprivation and toil in Torah

– Ethics of the Fathers 6:3

*       *       *

Contrast this with Rabbi Jonathan’s promise in the 9th Mishnah of chapter IV of the Ethics:  “Whoever fulfills the Torah in poverty, will ultimately fulfill it in wealth.”

Is poverty the ideal, the way of life most conducive to the acquisition of Torah, or is wealth the more desirable state, the reward for observing Torah despite one’s poverty?

The Perfect Food

– The Torah was given only to the eaters of the manna (Midrash)

The generation of Jews who physically stood at Sinai to receive the Torah from G-d derived their nourishment not from the conventional “bread from the earth,” but from the more refined “bread from heaven” with which the Almighty sustained them. But the Torah has been given to all generations of Jews. So how does one, today, become a “manna eater?”

After forty years of eating manna, the people of Israel were encamped on the eastern bank of the Jordan, poised to enter the Holy Land and assume the natural labors of plowing, sowing and harvesting for their bread. At this point, Moses spoke to them of the significance of the heavenly bread that had sustained them throughout their wanderings in the desert:

“He afflicted you, He made you go hungry, and He fed the manna which neither you nor your ancestors had ever experienced.  This was to teach you that man does not by bread alone, but by the utterance of G -d’s mouth does man live.”

For 40 years, manna had freed them from all material concerns.  It was the perfect food, providing its consumer with his precise daily nutritional needs – no more, no less.  Nevertheless – indeed, for this very reason – Moses calls it bread of affliction and poverty.  For the generation that lived on the manna experienced, on a daily basis, man’s utter dependence on G-d as the sustainer of life.  The manna taught them that man achieves nothing on his own: no matter how much a person labored to gather the manna, his efforts never yielded more than his exact requirements for a single day.

The challenge for us is that we, too, should be “eaters of the manna.”  That even as we eat ordinary bread, earned by the sweat of our brow, we recognize that it is G-d who creates the bread and imbues it with the ability to sustain life.  That we recognize that it is the “utterance of G -d’s mouth” within the bread–that is to say, the divine speech by which G-d created, and continues to create, all of existence–that nourishes us.

Hence, in the opening section of Grace after Meals, we acknowledge G-d as “He who in His goodness provides sustenance for the entire world.”  In fact, this is the very blessing composed by Moses in gratitude for the “bread from heaven” that rained down on his generation in the desert! We thank G-d for our bread, which our cunning and toil have “earned us,” with the same words our ancestors thanked Him for the manna. In other words, we strive to experience the same degree of dependency on G-d for our daily sustenance that the manna inspired in Moses’ generation, to whom man’s intrinsic “poverty” was so obviously demonstrated.

The Way of Torah

This explains the seemingly contradictory Mishnahs quoted above.  Wealth, in itself, is not a liability to the acquisition of Torah – it can even be an asset.  What is crucial, however, is an attitude and mind-set of poverty – the poverty of the manna-eater who appreciates that he, on his own, has nothing save what he is granted from Above. “This – and only this – is the way of Torah,” of gaining insight into the wisdom and will of G-d.

Introductory reading to Ethics of the Fathers:

All Israel has a share in the World to Come, as is stated: “And your people are all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever. They are the shoot of My planting, the work of My hands, in which I take pride.”
(Sanhedrin, 11:1)

Chapter Six

1.  The sages expounded in the language of the Mishnah (blessed is He who chose them and their learning):
Rabbi Meir would say: Whoever studies Torah for Torah’s sake alone, merits many things; not only that, but [the creation of] the entire world is worthwhile for him alone. He is called friend, beloved, lover of G-d, lover of humanity, rejoicer of G-d, rejoicer of humanity. The Torah enclothes him with humility and awe; makes him fit to be righteous, a chassid,  correct and faithful; distances him from sin and brings him close to merit. From him, people enjoy counsel and wisdom, understanding and power, as is stated, “Mine are counsel and wisdom, I am understanding, mine is power.”  The Torah grants him sovereignty, dominion, and jurisprudence. The Torah’s secrets are revealed to him, and he becomes as an ever-increasing wellspring and as an unceasing river. He becomes modest, patient and forgiving of insults. The Torah uplifts him and makes him greater than all creations.

2.  Said Rabbi Joshua the son of Levi: Every day, an echo resounds from Mount Horeb,  proclaiming and saying: “Woe is to the creatures who insult the Torah.” For one who does not occupy himself in Torah is considered an outcast, as is stated “A golden nose-ring in the snout of a swine, a beautiful woman bereft of reason.”  And it says: “And the tablets are the work of G-d, and the writing is G-d’s writing, engraved on the tablets” ; read not “engraved” (charut) but “liberty” (chairut)—for there is no free individual, except for he who occupies himself with the study of Torah. And whoever occupies himself with the study of Torah is elevated, as is stated, “And from the gift  to Nahaliel,  and from Nahaliel to The Heights.”

3.  One who learns from his fellow a single chapter, or a single law, or a single verse, or a single word, or even a single letter, he must treat him with respect. For so we find with David, king of Israel, who did not learn anything from Achitofel except for two things alone, yet he called him his “master,” his “guide” and his “intimate,” as is stated, “And you are a man of my worth, my guide and intimate friend.”  Surely we can infer a fortiori: if David, king of Israel, who learned nothing from Achitofel except for two things alone, nevertheless referred to him as his master, guide and intimate, it certainly goes without saying that one who learns from his fellow a single chapter, a law, a verse, a saying, or even a single letter, is obligated to revere him. And there is no reverence but Torah, as is stated “The sages shall inherit honor”  “and the integral shall inherit good” ; and there is no good but Torah, as is stated, “I have given you a good purchase; My Torah, do not forsake it.”

4.  Such is the way of Torah: Bread with salt you shall eat, water in small measure you shall drink, and upon the ground you shall sleep; live a life of deprivation and toil in Torah. If so you do, “fortunate are you, and good is to you” : fortunate are you in this world, and it is good to you in the World To Come.

5.  Do not seek greatness for yourself, and do not lust for honor. More than you study, do. Desire not the table of kings, for your table is greater than theirs, and your crown is greater than theirs, and faithful is your Employer to pay you the rewards of your work.

6.  Torah is greater than the priesthood or sovereignty, for sovereignty is acquired with thirty virtues,  the priesthood with twenty-four,  and Torah is acquired with forty-eight qualities. These are: study, listening, verbalizing, comprehension of the heart, awe, fear, humility, joy, purity, serving the sages, companionship with one’s contemporaries, debating with one’s students, tranquility, study of the scriptures, study of the Mishnah, minimizing engagement in business, minimizing socialization, minimizing pleasure, minimizing sleep, minimizing talk, minimizing gaiety, slowness to anger, good heartedness, faith in the sages, acceptance of suffering, knowing one’s place, satisfaction with one’s lot, qualifying one’s words, not taking credit for oneself, likableness, love of G-d, love of humanity, love of charity, love of justice, love of rebuke, fleeing from honor, lack of arrogance in learning, reluctance to hand down rulings, participating in the burden of one’s fellow, judging him to the side of merit, correcting him, bringing him to a peaceful resolution [of his disputes], deliberation in study, asking and answering, listening and illuminating, learning in order to teach, learning in order to observe, wising one’s teacher, exactness in conveying a teaching, and saying something in the name of its speaker. Thus we have learned: One who says something in the name of its speaker brings redemption to the world, as is stated, “And Esther told the king in the name of Mordechai.”

7.  Great is Torah, for it gives life to its observers in this world, and in the World To Come. As is stated: “For they  are life to he who finds them,  and a healing to all his flesh.”  And it says: “It shall be health to your navel, and marrow to your bones.”  And it says: “She is a tree of life for those who hold fast to her, and happy are those who support her.”  And it says: “For they shall be a garland of grace for your head, and necklaces about your neck.”  And it says: “She shall give to your head a garland of grace, a crown of glory she shall grant you.”  And it says: “With me, your days shall be increased, and years of life shall be added to you.”  And it says: “Long days in her right hand; in her left, wealth and honor.”  And it says: “For long days, years of life and peace, they shall add to you.”

8.  Rabbi Shimon the son of Judah would say in the name of Rabbi Shimon the son of Yochai: Beauty, strength, wealth, honor, wisdom, sageness, old age and children are becoming to the righteous and becoming to the world. As is stated: “Old age is a crown of beauty, to be found in the ways of righteousness.”  And it says: “The beauty of youths is their strength, and the glory of sages is their age.”  And it says: “The crown of sages are their grandchildren, and the beauty of children their fathers.”  And it says: “And the moon shall be abashed and the sun shamed, for the L-rd of hosts has reigned in Zion, and before his elders is glory.”
Rabbi Shimon the son of Menasia would say: these seven qualities enumerated by the sages for the righteous were all realized in Rabbi [Judah HaNassi] and his sons.

9.  Said Rabbi Yossei the son of Kisma: Once, I was traveling and I encountered a man. He greeted me and I returned his greetings. Said he to me: “Rabbi, where are you from?” Said I to him: “From a great city of sages and scholars, am I.” Said he to me: “Rabbi, would you like to dwell with us in our place? I will give you a million dinars of gold, precious stones and pearls.” Said I to him: “If you were to give me all the silver, gold, precious stones and pearls in the world, I would not dwell anywhere but in a place of Torah. Indeed, so is written in the book of psalms by David the king of Israel: `I prefer the Torah of Your mouth over thousands in gold and silver.’  Furthermore, when a person passes from this world neither silver, nor gold, nor precious stones, nor pearls accompany him, only Torah and good deeds, as is stated, `When you go it will direct you, when you lie down it will watch over you, and when you awaken it shall be your speech.’  `When you go it will direct you’—in this world; `when you lie down it will watch over you’—in the grave; `and when you awaken it shall be our speech’—in the World To Come. Also it says: `Mine is the silver and Mine is the gold, so says the L-rd of Hosts.’  ”

10.  G-d acquired five acquisitions in his world. These are: one acquisition is the Torah, one acquisition are the heavens and the earth, one acquisition is Abraham, one acquisition is the people of Israel, and one acquisition is the Holy Temple. The Torah, as it is written, “G-d acquired me as the beginning of His way, before His works of yore.”  The heavens and the earth, as it is written, “So says G-d: The heavens are My throne and the earth is My footstool; what house, then, can you build for Me, and where is My place of rest?” ; and it says, “How many are your works, O G-d, You have made them all with wisdom; the earth is filled with Your acquisitions.”  Abraham, as it is written, “And he blessed him, and said: Blessed be Abram to G-d Most High, acquirer of heavens and earth.”  Israel, as it is written, “Till Your nation, O G-d, shall pass, till this nation You have acquired shall pass” ; and it says “To the holy who are upon earth, the noble ones, in whom is all My delight.”  The Holy Temple, as it is written, “The base for Your dwelling that you, G-d, have achieved; the Sanctuary, O L-rd, that Your hands have established” ; and it says “And He brought them to His holy domain, this mount His right hand has acquired.”

11.  Everything that G-d created in His world, He did not create but for His glory. As is stated: “All that is called by My name and for My glory, I created it, formed it, also I made it.”  And it says: “G-d shall reign forever and ever.”

Studied at the conclusion of each lesson of the Ethics:

Rabbi Chananiah the son of Akashiah would say: G-d desired to merit the people of Israel; therefore, He gave them Torah and mitzvot in abundance. As is stated, “G-d desired, for sake of his righteousness, that Torah be magnified and made glorious.”
(Makot, 3:16)

Reparations and teshuvah

Posted: 29 May 2014 11:51 AM PDT

I want to call your attention to a remarkable essay published last week in the Atlantic, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, called The Case for Reparations. It is long, and it is tremendously worthwhile. Here is one very brief quote, to pique your interest:

Having been enslaved for 250 years, black people were not left to their own devices. They were terrorized. In the Deep South, a second slavery ruled. In the North, legislatures, mayors, civic associations, banks, and citizens all colluded to pin black people into ghettos, where they were overcrowded, overcharged, and undereducated. Businesses discriminated against them, awarding them the worst jobs and the worst wages. Police brutalized them in the streets. And the notion that black lives, black bodies, and black wealth were rightful targets remained deeply rooted in the broader society. Now we have half-stepped away from our long centuries of despoilment, promising, “Never again.” But still we are haunted. It is as though we have run up a credit-card bill and, having pledged to charge no more, remain befuddled that the balance does not disappear. The effects of that balance, interest accruing daily, are all around us.

Once you’ve read it, I commend to you the following specifically Jewish responses:

Ask yourself | Jewschool. “Once you read this very long piece (very long but read it) and nod to the facts and shake your head at the horrific racism at all levels most likely, most probably, you will think: But my family didn’t live in the U.S. when it engaged in slavery. But that doesn’t matter. Anyone living in the United States benefits from the economic realities built on slavery. Every white person has been enriched by the segregation of neighborhoods, schools, and Federally insured lending practices. This goes well beyond being afraid anytime the police stop you or having people cross to the other side of the street when you pass at night.”

The Jewish Case for Reparations — to Blacks by Emily L. Hauser in the Jewish Daily Forward. “In the Hebrew tradition prophets cry out in the wilderness in part because their audience tends to be uninterested in the message. If the people were ready, after all, they wouldn’t need a prophet… We learn in Pirkei Avot that while we aren’t required to complete the task of righteousness, neither are we free to desist from it. Otherwise, we run the risk of (in Coates’s words) ‘ignoring not just the sins of the past but the sins of the present and the certain sins of the future.'”

Late in the essay, Coates writes:

Perhaps after a serious discussion and debate—the kind that HR 40 proposes—we may find that the country can never fully repay African Americans. But we stand to discover much about ourselves in such a discussion—and that is perhaps what scares us. The idea of reparations is frightening not simply because we might lack the ability to pay. The idea of reparations threatens something much deeper—America’s heritage, history, and standing in the world.

Coates is calling us to a process of what my tradition calls teshuvah — the internal work of discernment, atonement, and creating change.

I hope his essay sparks a major American communal conversation. And I especially hope that it sparks a conversation in the American Jewish community (or, more accurately, American Jewish communities — we are many and varied!) about racism, about our complicity in racist systems, and about teshuvah.
