Memories – Performed by Rivie, Eli, & Avromi Schwebel

09.11.2012
November 9, 2012

Seventy four years ago today, a series of pogroms began across Germany. At least 91 Jews were murdered and 267 Shuls were burned or destroyed. Many Yeshivos, Jewish cemeteries and Jewish owned businesses were damaged and desecrated. Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass, marked an intensification of Nazi anti-Jewish policy that would culminate in the Holocaust—the systematic, state-sponsored murder of Jews.

Today we remember the memories of our six million.

Daf Yomi Kolel Happy Hour

Bons estudos!

Chicken Soup: A Jewish recipe

02.01.2014
To learn a little about Jewish cuisine click the link below.

http://www.jewfaq.org/food.htm

Chicken Soup: A Jewish recipe serves 4-6 people

1 whole chicken, cut up
1 bunch of dill
1 bunch of parsley
1 wax turnip, cut into large chunks
2-3 parsnips, cut into large chunks
2-3 carrots, cut into large chunks
3 leeks, cleaned, quartered and cut in half
1 onion, quartered
salt to taste
water
Jewish pasta, cooked separately

– Place the chicken in the bottom of the pot.
– In layers, add carrots, parsnips, turnips, leeks, onion.
– Top with parsley and dill.
– Fill water to cover all ingredients.
– Add salt to taste.
– Bring to a boil, remove any foam. When it reaches a boil, reduce heat to medium/low, cover the pot and simmer for 1 hour.
– After 1 hour the vegetables should be tender and not overcooked.
– Discard parsley and dill. Remove chicken to cool. Pull off all the meat and add it back into the pot. Discard the bones. Meanwhile, cooked the pasta.
– To serve, add pasta to a bowl. Ladle the soup over the top. Serve with bread and butter.

Tzimmes – Jewish carrot dish

15.04.2009
Mr. Hebrew makes Tzimmes. The expression “Dont make tzimmes out of it” (a big deal) isn’t really true when you use Neal’s preparation method.

Wikipedia definition: Tzimmes or tsimmes (Yiddish, Hebrew: צימעס) is a traditional Jewish dish in which the principal ingredient is diced or sliced carrots, sometimes combined with dried fruits like prunes or raisins, or chunks of meat (usually brisket or flanken). The dish is cooked slowly over low heat and flavored with honey and sometimes cinnamon. The variations are endless. The non-meat version tends to be sweeter, along the lines of candied yams.

Tzimmes is often part of the Rosh Hashanah meal, when it is traditional to eat sweet and honey-flavored dishes.

The name may come from the German words zum (for) and essen (eating). Some say the word is a corruption of the word ‘simmer.’ “To make a big tzimmes over something” means to make a big fuss.

Yom Hazikaron670

Yom Hazikaron Israel Memorial Day 2014

01.05.2014
Yom Hazikaron Israel Memorial Day is May 5, 2014 (beginning sundown May 4)
The Israeli Memorial Day” for Fallen Soldiers and Victim of Terror

Yom Hazikaron, the Israeli Memorial Day, is different in its character and mood from the American Memorial Day. For 24 hours (from sunset to sunset) all places of public entertainment (theaters, cinemas, nightclubs, pubs, etc.) are closed. The most noticeable feature of the day is the sound of siren that is heard throughout the country twice, during which the entire nation observes a two-minutes “standstill” of all traffic and daily activities. The first siren marks the beginning of Memorial Day at 8:00 P.M., and the second is at 11:00 A.M., before the public recitation of prayers in the military cemeteries. All radio and television stations broadcast programs portraying the lives and heroic deeds of fallen soldiers. Most of the broadcasting time is devoted to Israeli songs that convey the mood of the day.
The Silver Platter by Nathan Altermam
The Earth grows still.
The lurid sky slowly pales
Over smoking borders.
Heartsick, but still living, a people stand by
To greet the uniqueness
of the miracle.
Readied, they wait beneath the moon,
Wrapped in awesome joy, before the light.
— Then, soon,
A girl and boy step forward,
And slowly walk before the waiting nation;
In work garb and heavy-shod
They climb
In stillness.
Wearing yet the dress of battle, the grime
Of aching day and fire-filled night
Unwashed, weary unto death, not knowing rest,
But wearing youth like dewdrops in their hair.
— Silently the two approach
And stand.
Are they of the quick or of the dead?
Through wondering tears, the people stare.
“Who are you, the silent two?”
And they reply: “We are the silver platter
Upon which the Jewish State was served to you.”
And speaking, fall in shadow at the nation’s feet.
Let the rest in Israel’s chronicles be told.

Israel Study Tour 2012: A Visit with Rabbi Eliezer Waldman

11.04.2012

Rabbi Eliezer Waldman, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Kiryat Arba outside of Hebron, Israel, speaks to a group from Fellowship Church in Winter Springs, FL. He discusses spring as a time of new beginnings and its connection with the festival of Passover. He then puts the season in the historic context of the birth of new life in Judea and Samaria, as it was during Pesach in 1968 that 88 people celebrated the first Seder at the Park Hotel in Hebron (the community where Abraham first settled and King David first established his throne). That group, originally headed by Rabbis Levinger and Waldman, remained long after Pesach and were eventually relocated to an abandoned military base in nearby Kiryat Arba. In 1971 Kiryat Arba became the first community to be established in Judea and Samaria. Today it boasts more than 7,000 residents. Tying the history of Pesach to Israel’s present, Rabbi Waldman compares the Egyptians, Israel’s ancient oppressors, to her present day foes, saying that nothing any enemy can do will thwart God’s purposes and plan for His people.

Jewish Community Cookbooks

18.04.2014
March 5, 2014

Dr. Megan Elias, Associate Professor, Department of History, Queensborough Community College

Although there were a few very well-known cookbooks for Jewish families published before the Second World War in America, the post-war period saw a tremendous increase in the numbers of this genre. In particular, Jewish groups all over America published community cookbooks, usually for the purpose of fundraising. These books represent a new pride in identity which was intimately tied to the very public nature of Jewish suffering during the Holocaust. Working with the important collection of Jewish Community Cookbooks at the Dorot Division of the New York Public Library, this project seeks to put these cookbooks into the context of post-war American culture and an emerging sense of global citizenship.

Being Jewish in the New Germany

 03.07.2013

For more on this event, visit: http://bit.ly/16OtfI5
For more on the Berkley Center, visit:http://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu

January 29, 2006 | At this event, Jeffrey Peck argued that we must now begin considering how Jews live in Germany rather than merely asking why they would choose to do so. Germany today boasts the fastest growing population of Jews in Europe. The streets of Berlin abound with signs of a revival of Jewish culture, ranging from bagel shops to the sight of worshipers leaving synagogue on Saturday. This revival is spurred by the new energy infused by Jewish immigration from Russia and changes in immigration and naturalization laws in general. This event was cosponsored by Georgetown University’s Program for Jewish Civilization.

Jeffrey Peck is a professor of Comparative Literature, dean of the Weissman School, and vice provost for global strategies at Baruch College, as well as a Senior Fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies. He previously was a professor in the Communication, Culture and Technology Program at Georgetown University; he has also held positions at Humboldt University in Berlin, the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies, and the University of Washington. His research focuses on questions of national and minority identities, particularly German-Jewish life since unification and contemporary responses to the Holocaust in a transatlantic context. His most recent books include Being Jewish in the New Germany (2006) and Multiculturalism in Transit: A German-American Exchange (1998, edited with Klaus Milich). Peck received a Fulbright Scholar grant during the 2006-2007 academic year. He received his M.A. from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Is G-d Punishing Me?

Is G-d Punishing Me?
Iyar 1, 5774 · May 1, 2014

Dear Rachel,

All my life, whenever something good happens to me or is about to happen to me, something goes wrong. Whether it’s a new job, a new relationship, a new place to live, or even a family event, something always happens to ruin it. I feel like a greyhound at a racetrack chasing a rabbit—like G‑d is always holding out some prize to me and then snatching it away when I get within reach. Why would He do that? It’s not like what I’m trying to do is bad or wrong.

At a Loss

Dear At a Loss,

I can’t profess to know why G‑d does things. But I can offer you some suggestions of what to do from your end.

A famous letter written by Nachmonides, called Iggeret HaRamban, teaches that to develop proper awe of G‑d, we have to have humility. Humility is the key to both serving G‑d and attaining happiness; it gives us the ability to be flexible and adaptable, to let go and let G‑d.

The

I feel like a greyhound chasing a rabbit

only constant in the world is change. Rabbi Yehuda Loew (Maharal) says that the world is constantly moving, constantly being recreated, and our lives are moving with it. This is scientifically borne out: according to quantum physics, all matter is really just vibrating energy—nothing is static.

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov says that if a person is conscious of the fact that everything that happens to him is for his good, he experiences a taste of the next world. We think we know what is good for us and what will make us happy, but G‑d ultimately knows better. I’m pretty sure that if you thought about it, you’d agree that some of the things that you considered negative in your life ended up being the threshold to something wonderful.

How does a mother coax her child to walk? By holding out some beloved toy or prize. The child wants the toy and walks towards it, only to have it sometimes pulled away at the last moment. That’s because the mother’s aim is not to give the child the toy, but to encourage the child to walk. Perhaps G‑d is doing the same thing. He may be holding out something to you because He wants you to take a step in a particular direction, and He’s giving you an incentive to do it. Once you’re going in the right direction, the incentive isn’t necessary any more, so He takes it away.

Everyone has events and circumstances in their lives that are designed specifically for them to reach whatever goals G‑d has set for them. For some people, it’s having many children; for others, it’s having to move from place to place or job to job. Some people are poor; some live long, healthy lives; others are sick. The circumstances are not what’s important. What’s important is how we react to those circumstances.

When the plague of hail fell on Egypt, the wheat and the spelt were not destroyed. Because they ripened later, they were still soft, so they bent under the hail and didn’t break.1 In other words, they survived because they were flexible.

We all have plans and diaries and schedules. We make plans for our lives and for our days, and we micromanage every facet of them. But our plans must always defer to G‑d’s plans. G‑d has moved your cheese, and He wants you to take action. But you can do that only if you are willing to bend your will to His. To defer to the divine, if you will.

You may have heard the famous story of Reb Zusha:

A man asked the Maggid of Mezeritch, “The Talmud tells us that ‘a person is supposed to bless G‑d for the bad just as he blesses Him for the good.’ How is this possible?”

The Maggid sent this man to Reb Zusha of Anipoli to get his answer. Reb Zusha lived in dire poverty and ill health; his home was dilapidated, and his family did not

His home was dilapidated, and his family did not have enough to eat

have enough to eat. When this man posed the same question to Reb Zushe, he answered, “I don’t know why the Maggid sent you to me. He should have sent you to someone who has experienced suffering . . .”

Reb Zushe realized it was all good. Nothing bad ever happens to us, but we don’t have the vision to see things that way. We can’t see it because we are limited. We have to trust that G‑d knows what He’s doing, and that He’s doing the best for us. And the only way to to do this is with humility.

When the child who’s reaching the toy realizes he’s achieved walking, he isn’t mad at his mother; he’s delighted, and forgets all about the toy. He revels in his newfound talent, and his mother cheers him on. G‑d is cheering us on. If we don’t get the job or the apartment or the relationship, it just means that we were supposed to be somewhere else doing something else. Everything is arranged by G‑d for our ultimate good, whether it’s missing a bus, or not being invited to a party, or losing a job, or having to move. The source of our unhappiness isn’t the change in our plans; it’s that G‑d’s plans conflict with our own. If we just humbly go along, we’ll discover that we ended up where we needed to be. That’s why whenever we make plans, we say “B’ezrat Hashem” (“G‑d willing”) or “bli neder”(“without promising”).

If you follow G‑d’s roadmap, you’ll never get lost. G‑d willing.

I’d like to thank my son Joshua Israel Geller for providing many of the sources and ideas behind this column.

THE FREEMAN FILES: Radical Reversal

Radical Reversal
Nissan 30, 5774 · April 30, 2014
What is this world really meant to be?

You may have heard of figure-ground reversal. That’s when you switch the foreground for the background and vice-versa. For instance, looking past the vase to see the faces that form its background.

And that is how we create new ideas. We are the vase, the faces are the idea. We put ourselves in the background, quiet and out of the way, to let this new idea take the foreground and center stage.

We put ourselves in the background to let this new idea take the foreground.

The same applies to teaching a student, raising a child, or counseling a fellow human being. Those who are good at these things know the secret of being there by getting out of the way.

Yet, ironically, the reason we are getting out of the way is because, eventually, that is the way we will be most present. We will be present in our idea as it becomes a tangible creation, or in this other person as the seed we planted in his or her mind begins to grow.

That’s a divine experience, because drawing on this experience allows us to have a sense of G‑d’s act of creation and His purpose in doing so.

Radical Switch

Originally, there was only One; a singularity without bounds. The Kabbalists use the term “Infinite Light.” Trying to imagine infinite light is a self-defeating venture. If the light is infinite, there’s no room left for anything else, not even for someone observing this light—even from his own imagination. How can you imagine a situation that leaves you no room to exist?

And that’s really the most wondrous thing about the Infinite Light: that a finite, bounded creation could emerge from there. But it does, because when there are truly no bounds, even the impossible is possible.

Creation, then, was a figure-ground reversal of this state of the Infinite Light. It was the Infinite stepping aside, hiding behind the curtains so that a finite world could take center stage. Previously, that finite world may as well have been a movie projected onto a screen in the bright sunlight of midday, or a 20 watt light show dancing deep within the orb of the sun. Even those examples are woefully insufficient to describe what it means for a finite impossibility to be utterly subsumed within an infinite context. And now, as the Infinite Light recedes within itself, this world takes on a life of its own. Now all the parameters and patterns that we call the laws of nature step into the foreground. A profusion of disparate events and distinct particles emerges. A world.

Could there be a oneness behind this plurality, a singularity from which all of nature emerges? Rationally, it would seem so. A powerful mind could even attempt to visualize how this must be so. But the tangible, maddening experience of life drowns that sense of reason with its clamor, declaring the very opposite.

What was a radical proposition in the original state now becomes the mundanely obvious.

Now look at this: What was a radical proposition in the original state—the act of existence—now becomes the mundanely obvious. And what was most apparent and obvious—the singularity of the Infinite Light—now becomes a wondrous concept beyond our imagination.

Radical Fix

This, then, is the goal of our labor of life, the meaning behind our struggle with the everyday world to wring out its hidden treasures: We are healing this reversal. With every purposeful act, we are bringing the world to such a state that it itself should openly express the harmony of its underlying oneness. So that the singularity of the Infinite Light—that which we call G‑dliness—will be as apparent as before the creation.

But not so simple: If the background steps back into the foreground, what have we accomplished? Doesn’t that simply void the original reversal? Won’t all of existence once again be swallowed back within its womb?

If the background steps back into the foreground, won’t all of existence once again be swallowed back within its womb?

This is where our metaphors of creator and creation, teacher and student, parent and child, counselor and counseled become useful once again. In all of these, the purpose of getting out of the way is not in the absence itself. It is to be present even more so, which is possible only within a space that seems so far outside of us.

Here is a world that seems so far outside the oneness its Creator. Yet the further it seems from Him, the more He can be expressed within it.

Radical Wonder

How will it occur? Perhaps, in a future time of plenty, peace and harmony, men and women will be disillusioned with materialism and dedicate their minds to focusing on inner truths. Such was the case in ancient Israel, when prophets and enlightened souls were to be found on every hilltop and orchard.

Certainly, something of that sort will occur, but it would not present any healing. If the Infinite Light can only be found by transcending the physical world, then what have we accomplished in all our labor with this place?

Perhaps it will be through some massive revelation, by a great light from above—as was the case in Solomon’s Temple, where any person who entered lost all sense of self and was lifted to an entirely new world.

But that, too, would be a failure. It would not be this world speaking, but some supernal light. The world itself would remain unhealed.

Rather, the world will remain a material world, our eyes will remain physical eyes, and all of human experience will function just the same. The rods and cones by which we see, the drum and tendrils by which we hear and the grey matter that processes all that stimuli—they will see and hear and process G‑dliness as clearly and as evidently as today they see material objects and hear physical sounds. The little child jumping rope outside, the construction worker drilling steel girders, the ocean’s roar and the big blue sky will all speak of the oneness that breathes within all of them, without need to sit and ponder. It will be the foreground experience. Because that is what they all truly are.

The material world will be the device through which we can perceive the Infinite Light.

The material world will no longer conceal the light. Quite the contrary, it will be the device through which we can perceive and absorb that light. Because that is the purpose for which it was originally created.

“I will pour my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and daughters will prophesy…” (Joel 1:1)

“And the glory of G‑d will be revealed, and all flesh shall see…” (Isaiah 40:5)

Will there still be wonder? Yes. What will be wondrous and astounding is that this could actually be happening in a material world. That the infinite could be expressed within finite bounds.

There will always be wonder.

Maamar V’nacha Alav, 5725.

Revolutionary Spirituality image
The ultimate spiritual experience in the Diaspora was always the study of Torah. Rema image
The Rema, Rabbi Moshe Isserles, took the Sephardic Shulchan Aruch by Yosef Caro and keyed on differences that applied to Ashkenaz. Thus his entries in the Shulchan Aruch are a crucial Ashkenazic resource. But he was also a central figure in developing Jewish Europe. Rabbi Berel Wein explores the Rema’s life and historical times as he helped 16th- century Polish Jewry solidify as a community.

History series 3 image
Noted Jewish historian Rabbi Berel Wein traces the fascinating story of 19th and 20th century forces that drive modern Jewish life. Follow Rabbi Wein’s anecdotes and insights into this turbulent piece of our history. Secular Zionism and the Mussar movements, a Lithuanian answer to Chassidus, were on the rise as both religious and non-religious Jews sought a more spiritual life. Many Jews were trying to escape the growing anti-Semitism that plagued the shtetls by moving to America and Israel. But with the rise of Hitler in Germany, Jewish life would never be the same, and Rabbi Wein explores the forces that devastated Jewish Europe. Finally, Rabbi Wein discusses Zionism’s answer to the Holocaust, the establishment of a Jewish state. Israel gathered in survivors and put them to work building a country. But even today, Israel struggles for survival among its enemies. Rabbi Wein’s engaging account of Modern Jewish history will keep you on the edge of your seat!click here for more details

Jewish VALUES

The greatness of Judaism lies not only in its structure, its laws and rituals, but in its underlying value system. It is the direction of this value system that drives the halachic bent and traditional lifestyle of Judaism. Each of the six topics discussed – pleasantness, peace, family, Torah scholarship, the land of Israel, and responsibility to others is explained in practical, spiritual and national terms and how each affects Jewish life and history.

COMMENT: Lighting Up the Table

Lighting Up the Table
Nissan 28, 5774 · April 28, 2014

The menorah and the showbread table stood opposite each other in the outer chamber of the Tabernacle, and later of the Temple in Jerusalem: the menorah standing against the southern wall, and the table against the northern wall.

The menorah was kindled every afternoon, and remained lit throughout the night. The lights of the menorah symbolize the illumination provided by Torah and mitzvot: “For a mitzvah is a candle, and the Torah is light.”1 The spiritual illumination supplied by studying Torah and observing G‑d’s commandments lights up the darkest and coldest nights. As Isaiah said,2 “For behold, darkness shall cover the earth . . . and the L‑rd shall shine upon you.”

Both our spiritual and physical needs are provided by G‑d, and both come to us via the Temple

Every Shabbat twelve loaves of bread were placed on the table, where they remained until the following Shabbat.3 Bread is the staff of life, and a metaphor for all forms of nourishment. Thus, the table symbolizes all our material needs.

The Temple serves as the portal to heaven. As Jacob said regarding the Temple Mount: “This is none other than the house of G‑d, and this is the gate of heaven.”4 This gateway serves a dual purpose: it is the path through which our prayers ascend to heaven, and it is the conduit through which we receive all beneficence which descends from Above. Both our spiritual and physical needs are provided by G‑d, and both come to us via the Temple: the spiritual needs are channeled through the menorah, and material largess through the table.

The biblical commentator Rabbi Shmuel ben Meir (Rashbam),5 explains that the menorah’s practical purpose was to provide light for the table. After all, the royal table needs to be illuminated by a royal candelabrum!

The message is quite clear. Our Torah and mitzvot must “illuminate” all our physical pursuits. We cannot relegate the spiritual to the synagogue, or to the hour or two of the day which we dedicate to Torah study, prayer and good deeds. Our connection with G‑d must be apparent even while involved in a business meeting, or when sitting down to eat.

A home whose “table” is illuminated by its “menorah” is truly worthy of being a sanctuary wherein G‑d willingly dwells

VOICES: My Grandmother and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala

My Grandmother and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala
Nissan 28, 5774 · April 28, 2014

When I saw the headline announcing author Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s death on April 3, 2013, at age 85, my first thought was of the slim volume by her on my bookshelf.

It’s been there for years—decades, really. My grandmother gave it to me when I was a teenager. “This is  quite amusing, Yvette,” she said in her refined Viennese accent. “You might enjoy it.” I put it on my shelf to keep for later, but somehow I never got to it.

Yet I kept it with me, through moves across continents, through changing houses. It survived numerous purges of other never-read books. I would never give it away, for in all the years my grandmother was alive, it’s one of the only books she’d ever shared with me.

My parents

My grandmother gave it to me when I was a teenager

and I have other, seemingly more important books that belonged to her. Her complete set of Schiller sits in my parents’ house, in the original German, which nobody in our family can read. But the Jhabvala novel, handed to me casually years ago, seems more personal. I remember my grandmother each time I look at it.

Given all this emotional baggage attached to one slim paperback, it might seem odd that I’d never read it. But the novel didn’t really grab me. Like many of Jhabvala’s books, it takes place in her home country, India. The humor is subtle, and the main character’s challenges are so far removed from my own life and experiences that I never had the energy to finish it.

So I was shocked when I read Jhabvala’s obituary. Born Ruth Prawer in prewar Germany, Jhabvala was Jewish. Her father, Marcus, was a lawyer from Poland, and her mother, Eleanor Cohn, was born in Germany. The family fled the Nazis, moving to Britain in 1939. By all accounts, little Ruth reinvented herself, devouring English novels and embracing life as a British schoolgirl.

Despite her adjustment, though, it couldn’t have been an easy time. After the war, as news trickled out of Europe about the horrors there, the Prawers began to learn the fate of the relatives they left behind. Once he had established beyond a doubt that all his relatives left behind in Europe perished, Marcus Prawer killed himself. Three years later, Ruth—who was then at university—married Cyrus Jhabvala, an Indian architect studying with her in London. Shedding her life in Britain, she moved with him to Delhi, where she immersed herself in her new homeland.

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s story is unusual, but her family situation reminded me of my grandmother’s. My grandmother and her parents also left Austria at the last possible moment. They also left behind relatives and friends. Grandma even initially lived in London for two years, at the same time and in the same neighborhood as the Prawers. Working for a succession of British Jewish families there (her temporary residence visa allowed her to work only as a servant), my grandmother felt a similar feeling of dislocation. In fact, for the rest of her life, she recalled her years as a wartime maid in London with some bitterness. One family she worked for locked up their good food and fed her scraps; another relegated her to sleep in the attic—on a reclining chair—when they wanted her room for guests.

My grandmother in London—a stressful time.

Interestingly, the only time she ever felt at home in London was on Shabbat. My grandmother’s family was not traditionally observant at all in Austria. But in those lonely years in London, Grandma befriended and even lived for a few months with another refugee who was religious. This girl would never compromise on keeping

kosher or Shabbat, and she and my grandmother spent many Shabbats together—my grandmother’s first tastes of how sweet that holy day can be. Those moments not only sustained her during her two long years in London, but she talked about them often for the rest of her life.

In 1939, when she’d been in London for two years, my grandmother and her parents finally received the news they’d been hoping for: A relative in Chicago had sponsored them, and they all had received visas for America! My grandmother’s parents—still in Vienna—filled in the necessary immigration forms and set sail. All that was left was for my grandmother to join them, but then disaster struck: unable to have my grandmother (who was then in London) sign her immigration form in person, her mother had signed for her. This “forgery” was discovered, and my grandmother was barred from entering America. Her two-year visa in Britain was coming to an end and, on the eve of World War II, she faced deportation back to Austria.

Summoning all her courage, Grandma appealed to the American embassy in London. Daily, she visited the embassy and ceaselessly put her case to the officers there. Finally, after several weeks, she received word that the ambassador himself would see her. Joe Kennedy, America’s wartime ambassador, was no friend to the Jews. Throughout World War II, he made sure America’s already-small quota of Jewish refugees was never filled. But on this occasion, he saved the life of one Jew.

Decades later, Grandma would say her main memory of that meeting was how thick Ambassador Kennedy’s carpet was. She stood on that carpet and, in broken English, explained why she couldn’t possibly have traveled back to Vienna to sign her visa, why she couldn’t return there now, and how she hoped to join her parents in Chicago. After listening, Ambassador Kennedy sat back in his chair, regarded the young woman before him, and saved her life. “All right, Miss Dubsky,” he told her, “I’ll give you your visa. America needs more girls with spunk like you.” In a moment, her life was altered.

Grandma moved to Chicago just as war was breaking out in Europe. She shared a cramped apartment on the West Side with her parents and five other refugees. Months after arriving, she married one of them, a young engineer from Vienna. During the wedding, which took place in the study of another refugee, my grandmother’s mother cried nonstop, “This isn’t how I pictured your wedding.” When the rabbi’s wife brought out a homemade coffee cake for the wedding meal, my great-grandmother

sobbed even harder.

Grandma was unfazed, though. She realized the magnitude of the destruction in the home they’d left behind, and was grateful for her cramped and crowded apartment, grateful for the wedding and the coffee cake, and grateful to America for letting her in.

My grandmother in Austria before fleeing with her family.

Her few family members who did get out of Europe with her—or, in the case of one of her sisters-in-law, survived the concentration camps—found themselves, like Jhabvala, unmoored in strange new surroundings. In later years, Jhabvala described herself as homeless: “Really blown about from country to country, culture to culture, till I feel—till I am—nothing.”

I see this dislocation in my own family even today, three generations later. Over the years, I and some of my relatives have tried to find our way back to the religious lifestyle our grandparents left behind. One cousin contacted me and told me she didn’t even know her refugee grandparents were Jewish, so completely had they hidden their past, fearful of revealing their Jewish identity in their new country. Another relative reached out to me for help in connecting with other Jews, as her parents and grandparents had settled in a place with no established community, and she didn’t even know where to turn.

After I read of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s death, I finally opened the book my grandmother gave me so long ago. I was hoping to find something that appealed to her, something that would help me understand why she found the book so amusing.

I’m in the middle of the novel, and am enjoying it at last. But if I was looking for something about our shared family experiences in it, perhaps something that would speak about the past that my grandmother might have identified with, I doubt I’ll find it. I don’t think there’s much about our shared Jewish heritage in the novel at all, except perhaps for one passage.

A character in the novel tells a brief tale, and it reminds me of a classic Jewish story I once heard. Perhaps Jhabvala heard it back in Europe, and it stayed lodged in her memory:

A father and son are taking a ride through a forest, and the son asks if they can stop and pick flowers for a while. The father says they have many more miles to travel and the day is getting long, but the son insists they stop, and gets off his horse.

The son insists they stop, and gets off his horse

“We can rest,” the father tells his son, “but listen to me. You might stray far from me. If that happens, I will call out to you, ‘My son!’ You might wander so far away, though, that you won’t hear me. If that happens, you must call out to me.”

The son wandered in the forest, and it came to pass just as his father had said. The son wandered so far away that he didn’t even hear his father calling out to him. Then the son did as his father instructed, and cried out “My father! My father!”

The story is an allegory. We are all that son, and the father in the story is the divine. Even if we wander far, we each have a way back. By calling out to G‑d—and by reaching out to connect to our fellow Jews—we each have a way of going home.

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s daughter reported that before her death, her mother, who at that point lived in New York, consented to meet with a rabbi. I hope that at the end of her life she felt at last able to connect to the Jewish community she had fled so many years before.

This week’s portion: creating liberation; Shavuot; and the Jubilee

This week’s portion: creating liberation; Shavuot; and the Jubilee

Posted: 05 May 2014 07:19 AM PDT

Liberty+bell+PAThis week’s Torah portion, Behar, tells us that when we enter into the land we may farm for six years but the seventh year should be a Shabbat for the land. During that year we should neither sow nor reap; it is a chance for the earth to experience the sacred rest which is part of the structure of creation. The Torah goes further: not only is every seventh year meant to be a shmita (sabbatical) year, but after seven “sevens” of years — 49 years — the 50th year is theYovel, or “Jubilee,” and that year too is a year of sacred rest.

During the Yovel, all debts are cancelled; those who have gone into indentured servitude are released; and any land transactions which have taken place are annulled so that the land can return to its original owners. Or perhaps I should say, original caretakers — since Torah is clear that the land may be lent to the tribes of Israel, on condition of appropriate behavior thereupon, but it truly belongs to the Holy One of Blessing.

It’s always striking to read these verses during the counting of the Omer. This week’s Torah portion instructs us to count seven “sevens” of years, and to celebrate the 50th year as a time for proclaiming liberty throughout the land. Right now we are counting seven “sevens” of days, and we will celebrate the 50th day as the time of the giving of the Torah. What might the parallel teach us? How is Shavuot like the Jubilee?

In his collection Tales of the Hasidim, Martin Buber recounts that the rabbi of Kotzk was asked: “Why is Shavuot called ‘the time the Torah was given’ rather than the time we received the Torah?” The Kotzker answered: “The giving took place on one day, but the receiving takes place at all times.” Shavuot is the day when we celebrate God’s gift of Torah — but the reciprocal process of actively receiving Torah is ongoing. The Jubilee year is the year when we celebrate release from our accumulated debts and transactions — but the reciprocal process of actively creating liberation is ongoing.

The sabbatical and Jubilee year teach the importance of emunah, trust and faith. In the ancient world, taking a year off from cultivating food was a profound gesture of emunah. It required a leap of faith in God Who would provide even if we stopped our farming and harvesting. (And if that were true of the sabbatical year, how much more so the Jubilee year.)

My b’nei mitzvah students frequently ask me whether this ever actually happened. Maybe, maybe not. I can offer a variety of rabbinic teachings about the conditions under which we are traditionally considered obligated to follow these teachings. But for me, that’s not the interesting question. I’d rather ask: what spiritual truths can we learn from this week’s Torah portion?

As Shabbat is our weekly reminder to relinquish work and to recognize ourselves as holy and beloved regardless of our job titles, salaries, or accomplishments, the shmita year reminds us that the earth too is holy and beloved regardless of how “valuable” it may be and regardless of how we may usually put it to work for us. And the Yovel year urges us to let go of debts and grudges, to relinquish old angers and outdated paradigms, in order to experience true freedom.

It’s only when we are free that we can choose to enter into a different kind of relationship — the covenant between us and God which we reconsecrate and renew at Shavuot. Slaves to Pharaoh, slaves to overwork, slaves to opinion and custom can’t enter into real relationship with God. But once we are free, then we can choose: not to be enslaved, but to serve. Our purpose in this life is not earning money or seeking fame. It’s serving God through caring for our planet and living in right relationship with each other.

This requires emunah, trust and faith, no less than the temporary cessation of farming did. To proclaim release and liberty — to consciously free ourselves from old paradigms, constricted understandings, the grudges and hatreds we have taken on — requires us to trust that something better is possible. It requires us to believe that there is more to who we are than our accumulated labels. But imagine if each of us could really do that. What new Torah might we be capable of receiving at Shavuot then?

A quick shout-out to a few places where my work has been cited or linked lately:

First — over the weekend, Rabbi Amy Ehrlich quoted my commentary on last week’s Torah portion, Emor, in her at sermon at Temple Emanu-El in New York! Temple Emanu-El was the first Reform Jewish congregation in New York City; Rabbi Google informs me that it’s the largest synagogue in the world, and that because of its size and prominence, has served as a flagship congregation in Reform Judaism since its founding in 1845. You can hear her sermon on their worship broadcast page, and if you’re curious to read more of the d’var Torah which she cited, it’s here: The bodies we are.

Secondly, at Linguae Antiquitatum there’s the first edition of an Ancient Languages blog carnival, and the carnival curator asked for permission to link to a few of my old posts. There’s an excerpt there from the 2008 post where I offered a translation of the first few lines of the Qur’an into Hebrew, along with some thoughts about poetry and translation; also a quote from a post about the Arabic words nafs and ruh and their similarities to the Hebrew nefesh and ruach. It’s neat to see interest in those posts six years after they were written.

Thanks, y’all!
