LAG b’Omer magic mountain

19.05.2014
short visual viral of this amazing spiritual carnival on Mt.Meron, day 33 of the Omer, a spiritual preparation period alligned to the sephirot in the Jewish calendar.

There are many mysterious reasons for the holiday. One suggestion is that Rashbi (who died AND was born on this date according to tradition) left his cave of refuge, where the Zohar emerged as a mystical stream of consciousness, on the 33rd day of the omer; and this is detailed on the 33rd page of tractate shabbat in the Talmud.

A Life Apart: Hasidism in America – Part 1 – 9

18.03.2012
Hasidic Jews seem alien, and even hostile, to those outside their culture, which frequently includes other Jews. They dress differently, don’t mingle between the sexes, speak Yiddish, and wear side curls, all in an attempt to rigorously follow the commandments of the Torah. They tend to keep to themselves, shunning television and the media so outside influences cannot corrupt their values and views. Yet filmmakers Oren Rudavsky and Menachem Daum were able to enter their world, and the result is the fascinating documentary A Life Apart: Hasidism in America. Using interviews with academics and members of the community and some historical footage, the filmmakers trace the growth of Hasidic groups in the United States. Groups formed around particular Rebbes (learned leaders) and they took their names from their Eastern European home cities (the Satmar Hasids, the Breslov Hasids, and so on). Leonard Nimoy and Sarah Jessica Parker narrate, explaining how this movement came to America and how it was able to flourish. Dissenting voices also appear, in the form of neighborhood people who are distressed at the Hasids’ refusal to speak to members not in their community and of a young woman, Pearl Gluck, who left the community in order to pursue her writing and to follow a life of her own choosing. Many Hasids refuse to speak on camera, and we see many shielding themselves with hands or coats so as not to appear on film. But those who do appear are poignant in their discussions of why the Hasidic life is important to them. One man speaks to the directors, even as he acknowledges that he will never see the movie, but he will do it “in order to help a Jew make a living.” One couple, Holocaust survivors, are not Hasidic, but their children are, and the reasonings of both the parents and the children are interesting. This film, shown on PBS, is a consequential look into a lifestyle many of us don’t understand, and it may help in increasing an understanding.

Jerusalem Day (Yom Yerushalayim) This Week in Jewish History

22.05.2014
Jerusalem Day (Yom Yerushalayim) celebrates the unification of Jerusalem in the context of the Six-Day War of June 1967. This dramatic military achievement represented a victory that was both political and symbolic, giving Jews control over the the Old City and the Temple Mount after nearly 2000 years of exile.

WEEKLY STORY: Aliyah Funding

Aliyah Funding
Iyar 20, 5774 · May 20, 2014

Rabbi Meir of Premishlanwas such a holy person that many other holy men in their own right came to seek his advice and blessing. A certaintzaddik once came to see Rabbi Meir, asking for his blessing because he planned to settle in Eretz Yisrael. Rabbi Meir listened and then said,

“And how do you expect to raise the money for this journey?”

“I hope to visit some relatives. When I tell them of my plans, I am sure that they will help me raise the money.”

“I guarantee to raise the money for your traveling expenses.”

Rabbi Meir was sunk in thought. He seemed disturbed. “Your idea does not appeal to me. You will be wasting months of precious time which could be far better devoted to Torah study. But I see that you are determined to go. Let me suggest something: why don’t you stay here with me for some time first? I guarantee to raise the money for your traveling expenses.”

The visitor thought it over, then decided to accept the offer. The rebbe did not dismiss him, but told his attendant to show in the next person who was waiting to see him.

A rich man opened the door and was about to enter, when suddenly he spied the man already there. He hesitated on the threshold. Still, the attendant had told him to enter. Was there a mistake? He stood there, not knowing whether to advance or retreat. The passing moments seemed like an eternity. Finally Rabbi Meir spoke, telling him to enter.

“I have a story to tell you,” he said. Then, turning to the visiting tzaddik, he added, “But I would like you to hear it too.” Once again facing the rich man, he continued, “It has a worthwhile moral that will do both of you good.

But Avigdor was a very stingy person, a miser.

“Many years ago, there lived a very prosperous Jew who owned much property. But Avigdor was a very stingy person, a miser. He never let a person into his home. If a poor man came knocking at the door, begging for something to eat, he would tell him to go to his neighbor, Matisyahu, a worthy, G‑d-fearing Jew. ‘He will feel far more comfortable there,’ Avigdor would say to himself.

“And indeed, this was true. While Matisyahu was not a man of means like his wealthy neighbor, still his family always had food on their table. And there was always room for one person more, no matter how shabby or dirty the visitor. Reb Matisyahu’s home and heart were big enough for everyone in need.

“All of the townspeople felt a lot of respect for Matisyahu. He was so good, so kind . . . so hospitable! But if you think that they held him in higher esteem that the stingy Avigdor, you are wrong. It is human nature to respect a man with money, and they all treated Avigdor with a special reverence, even though they knew how stingy he was.

“The injustice of this caused turmoil in heaven. The angels came before the heavenly court demanding that Avigdor be stripped of his wealth, and that these riches be given to none other than Matisyahu the neighbor, who had never denied anyone his help or hospitality. But before the sentence was carried out, Eliyahu Hanavi (Elijah the prophet) came before the court and said, ‘A person should not be judged just by hearsay. I will descend to earth and give Avigdor one last chance. I must see if he really is such a miser.’

“So, Eliyahu disguised himself as a poor man and descended to earth. He knocked on Avigdor’s door. A servant answered. When he saw the poor, ragged, shivering man, he shooed him away. ‘Quick, be gone! Go, before my master sees you. He is a mean, cruel person. If he finds you here, he will throw both of us out of the house.’ He tried to slam the door shut, but the poor man had his foot in the doorway. ‘I won’t take anything. Just let me warm up by the stove for a few minutes. Don’t you see how cold it is outside?’

“They were still arguing when Avigdor himself arrived. ‘What’s going on here?’ he asked. ‘What do you want?’ he demanded of the ragged stranger.

“The servant was so terrified at having been caught speaking to a beggar that he was struck dumb with fear. But the stranger showed no awe of the master.

“‘I was asking if I could come in and warm up. I wanted a small glass of shnapps(strong liquor) for my freezing bones.’

“This is not a hotel, nor a charity hostel!”

“‘You must be out of your mind. This is not a hotel, nor a charity hostel!’ He turned to his servant, saying, ‘Throw this man out at once!’

“Even though he had wanted to be kind, the servant was forced to take the poor man by the lapels and turn him out the door. He shut it tightly behind him.

“Eliyahu Hanavi stood outside in the freezing weather, weeping, pleading to be let in just for a few minutes. When he saw that there was no reaction from within, that Avigdor had hardened his heart and was ignoring him, he really wept. He was weeping for Avigdor’s soul.

“Eliyahu returned to the heavenly court. He did not have good news. There was nothing he could say in Avigdor’s defense. The case rested. Avigdor would have to lose his fortune, as had been ruled.”

After a brief pause, Rabbi Meir continued his story. He raised his voice for emphasis.

“When I, Meir, heard of this sentence, I rushed forward to defend this Avigdor. ‘How can one mete out such dire punishment without warning?’ I asked the heavenly court. ‘I want to warn Avigdor,’ I declared. ‘I will not let him be trapped like a poor helpless fly in a spiderweb. Every Jew deserves a second chance! Allow me to be the court’s messenger. If Avigdor agrees to give four hundred rubles to this righteous Jew standing here for his traveling expenses to Eretz Yisrael, and if he resolves to mend his ways, he will get his second chance. But if,’ and here he lowered his voice, ‘G‑d forbid, he ignores this warning and persists in his stingy, evil ways, he will lose his entire fortune and become dependent upon the kindness of others for the rest of his days!’”

Rabbi Meir was silent. Turning to the rich man still standing in the door, he continued, “Avigdor is here right now. Let us ask him what he says.”

He burst into tears, then fell to the floor in a faint.

Avigdor could not speak. He burst into tears, then fell to the floor in a faint. The rebbe and the visitor tried to revive him. When he came back to consciousness, he turned to the rebbe, saying, “You are so right, Rebbe; that is exactly what happened! I sinned! I have been evil! But I will turn over a new leaf, I promise. But please, have mercy!”

He reached in his pocket and drew out his purse. He counted out four hundred rubles and gave them to the other man. “Please,” he begged, “when you reach Jerusalem, pray for me!”

With the four hundred rubles, the tzaddik and his family were able to go directly to Eretz Yisrael without delay.

As for Avigdor, his home became an open house for all wayfarers, troubled people and beggars. His reputation as a generous baal tzedakah (charity giver) traveled far and wide, and he used his great wealth to help his less-fortunate brethren in every way.

Connection to the weekly Torah reading: Plagues
Connection to this week: 24 Tevet (this Thursday) is the yahrzeit of the rebbe in the story.
(Also, Jerusalem Day falls the day before, so a breeze of aliyah is in the air!)

Biographical note:
Rabbi Meir of Primishlan [?–29 Iyar 1850] lived in abject but patient poverty, yet exerted himself tirelessly for the needy and the suffering. His ruach hakodesh(prophetic spirit) and his ready wit have become legendary. He wrote no works, but some of his teachings were collected and published by his chassidim after his death.

Jewish Documentary – Full Film

21.04.2009
http://JewishHistory.org Faith and Fate is a documentary telling the story of the Jews in the 20th Century.

The first Episode is called, “The Dawn of the Century” and covers 1900 – 1910.

This episode introduces the uniqueness of Jewish history in the 20th century within the
context of world history. At the turn of the 20th century, Jews were scattered across the
globe, representing only ¼ of one percent of the worlds population. It was a time of
empires, imperial rule and colonial expansionism. In Russia the masses, including the
Jews, lived in dire poverty which was compounded by grassroots antisemitism. In 1905
the Russian masses revolted and there was a general strike. On Bloody Sunday the
Czar responded with force. The Czar did not abdicate until 1917, which is typically the
date given for the second Russian Revolution, which, in turn, led to increased pogroms
against the Jews. The pogroms and the economic conditions forced approximately
40% of Jewish population to leave the Russian Empire and go to Western countries
including the United States and to Palestine and other countries as far away as South
Africa and Australia.

Emigration and the Enlightenment presented Jews with the dilemma and opportunity to
maintain or reject their traditional Jewish upbringing, and many decided to forgo their
traditional Judaism and blend in with their larger non-Jewish society. Within the
traditional Jewish world, change was occurring as well, with the rise and acceptance of
the Mussar Movement, an ethical approach to Judaism. Because Jews were not
allowed into institutions of higher education in Eastern Europe, most of them went to
study in yeshivas to sharpen their intellect. The traditional yeshiva, unintentionally,
became a breeding ground for all philosophies, Jewish and secular alike. Zionism
grew as a national movement, and was led by secular Jews antithetical to traditional
Judaism. While most rabbis rejected Zionism and its leaders, because of their
nontraditional beliefs, a minority of rabbis developed religious Zionism, which combined
traditional Judaism with Zionist philosophy. The Old Yishuv Jews, who had settled in
Palestine in the late 1800s, were committed to traditional Judaism and rejected
secular, nationalistic ideas of the New Yishuv Zionists.

The Sephardic Jews living in Moslem and Arab countries at the turn of the 20th
Century maintained their own rich Jewish traditions and heritage, which often differed
from those of the Ashkenazim. There was relative peace within the Jewish community
and among the leadership in these Arab and Moslem countries, and although life was
sometimes difficult, these Sephardic Jews did not experience, by and large, pogroms
or the influences of the Enlightenment or Reform Judaism.

In Europe, Jews were the leaders of the Labor and Socialist movements and
spearheaded the establishment of labor unions in America. The challenge of
assimilation in the United States was the greatest difficulty confronting Jewish
immigrants. Attempts were made to stem the tide. Reform Judaism became a symbol
of acceptance into modern American society and Dr. Solomon Schechter initiated the
Universal Synagogue movement which became Conservative Judaism. Also
Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish immigrants had to find their respective places within
the Jewish community and in their new host country, the United States, as well..
A small, strong group of American Jewish immigrants managed to cling to their Jewish
traditions and adapt themselves to the new reality in America. Meanwhile, for Jews
around the world, with the threat of WWI looming, the imperial race for supremacy was
escalating

The Story of the Jews with Simon Schama

STAND WITH ISRAEL

SRAEL is the historic homeland of the Jewish people. God gave that land to the descendants of Abraham and Sarah, who are the Jews. The Bible says he’ll never break that covenant: Judges 2:1 “I brought you unto the land which I swore unto your fathers; and I said, I will Never break my covenant with you”. God set forth what he had done for Israel, and what he had promised.
