Rockland Jewish Community Campus Vigil For Kidnapped Israeli Teens

18.06.2014
WEST NYACK – Three teens are the focus of a massive search in and around Israel’s West Bank after they were allegedly captured by Palestinians.

Dozens of people came together at the Rockland Jewish Community Campus in West Nyack today to pray for their safety.

The teens disappeared last week, and Israel has blamed Hamas for their apparent abduction. One of the boys, 16-year-old Naftali Frenk, has dual Israeli/American citizenship with extended family in Monsey. Frenk’s mother says the boys were grabbed on the way home from school.

The Israeli army has re-arrested 51 former Palestinian prisoners as part of a furious search for the boys. Army spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said on Wednesday that the 51 were among more than 65 Palestinians detained overnight in the search for the teens. The 51 were part of a group of 1,027 Palestinians released in 2011 from Israeli prisons in exchange for an Israeli soldier captured by Gaza militants in a cross-border raid in 2006. Lerner says that since the disappearance, a total of 240 Palestinians have been arrested in the West Bank.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says his forces are also searching and criticized their abductors. Abbas told Muslim and Arab leaders gathered in Saudi Arabia that those who abducted the three “want to destroy us.” He did not elaborate, but appeared to be referring to his government. Abbas says that once the kidnappers are found, his government will “settle accounts with them.”

The boys’ families have started the Twitter hashtag #BringBackOurBoys in an effort to raise awareness and to ensure their safe return home.

Another prayer service will be held at the Rockland Jewish Community campus in West Nyack Thursday at noon. A rally for their safe return is being held Thursday night at Provident Bank Park in Pomona.

[Part 1] Passing the Torch: Jewish Music Archives and the Future of Yiddish Song

16.06.2014
Sunday, April 6, 2014 | 11am
YIVO Institute for Jewish Research; American Society for Jewish Music
Symposium
Around 1900, East European Jews became acutely aware of the impact of modernization and urbanization on their culture: on their songs, their tales, and customs. They set in motion a wide range of projects and institutions to gather, archive, and study fading folklore. YIVO was a pioneer in this push, along with a galaxy of Polish and Russian (later Soviet) activists. Today, with the loss of the original population and the huge demographic and cultural shifts of world Jewry, the surviving archives both preserve and channel a rising tide of interest, even a hunger, for what’s called “Yiddish” music and folklore.

This symposium brings together archivists, scholars and performers to discuss the history and creation of Yiddish folk music archives, and the future of the study and performance of Yiddish song today. What is the role of Jewish music archives in fostering new scholarship and Yiddish music?

The event is dedicated to the memory of Chana Mlotek, YIVO’s Music Archivist from 1978 until her recent passing at age 91 in 2013.

This program is made possible with the generous support of the Mlotek family. It is co-sponsored by the American Society for Jewish Music.

The Katz Family: Four Generations of Progressive Yiddish Culture

29.10.2013
While many Jewish families have left behind parts of their European lives in the journey to the United States, the descendants of the prominent writer of the political left, Moishe Katz, have managed to pass on their love of Yiddish and progressive Jewish culture. They speak Yiddish, sing in the Boston Workmen’s Circle’s A Besere Velt (A Better World) Yiddish Chorus, and Pauline, one of the youngest generation, was a Yiddish Book Center fellow in 2010-2011.

02.07.2013
A Celebration of Yiddish Creativity

On Sunday, May 5, 2013, the League for Yiddish held a historic program, “A Celebration of Yiddish Creativity,” in honor of the publication of its book, New Yiddish Literature, Afn Shvel Issue # 358-359.

The program features: greetings from Prof. David G. Roskies of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America; dramatic readings from the book by actor Hy Wolfe; a discussion on “Prospects for Contemporary Yiddish Writing” with Professors Marc Caplan, Dov-Ber Kerler, and Sheva Zucker; and new Yiddish songs composed and sung by Josh Waletzky. (Those interested will be able to hear the songs when Waletzky’s new CD is released.)

The volume being honored (see the cover and excerpts at http://leagueforyiddish.org/palce3sdi…) encompasses the work of 30 people writing in Yiddish, ranging from college students to venerable older Yiddish writers, living on four continents and in seven countries.

The evening was organized in partnership with the Program in Modern Jewish Studies of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

BORIS DORFMAN – A MENTSH – DOCUMENTARY FILM – OFFICIAL TRAILER

28.03.2014
A radically Yiddish Film: Boris Dorfman – A Mentsh
by Uwe & Gabriela von Seltmann
© Apfelstrudel Media Berlin

“A Mentsh” is a movie shot entirely in the Yiddish language. It’s set in the former multinational city of Lviv, Ukraine, and the first part of a planned Yiddish trilogy (Lviv, Tel Aviv,New York). Lviv was a centre of Jewish life for more than 600 years. During World War II this special culture was destroyed. 75 years after the beginning of the war, Boris Dorfman takes us on an oneiric trip to all the places of horror and hope reflecting the Jewish history. The 90-year-old activist is virtually the last one in town still speaking the almost extinct language of Yiddish – he is like a living relic of the past and a fighter against oblivion. While remembering the past, he lives in the present and tries to prepare the people for the future — he is “a mentsh”, someone full of love and empathy.

The Making of a Yiddish Carpenter-Poet: Alter Esselin’s Early Years

03.06.2014
In this short feature, Joe Esselin, son of Yiddish poet and carpenter Alter Esselin, delves into his father’s past as a little boy from a shtetl in what is now Ukraine. He describes his harrowing yet endearing experience working as an apprentice to help his impoverished, widowed mother and his siblings. Young Alter then travels alone across the European continent to board a ship to America, carrying with him but one item, and the memories of his homeland that would one day inspire his poignant poetry.

Nicholas Donin and the Disputation of 1240 (This Week in Jewish History)

30.05.2014
In 1240 Nicholas Donin, a Jewish convert to Christianity, engaged in a public debate with his former teacher, Rabbi Yechiel of Paris. Donin charged that the Talmud was a noxious document that prevented the Jews from embracing Christianity, and brought a total of 35 distinct accusations against this ancient holy text. Ultimately, 24 carriage loads of Talmuds, representing 10,000 priceless manuscripts were burned in Paris on June 6, 1242. Jewish Documentary – Full Film

21.04.2009
http://JewishHistory.org Faith and Fate is a documentary telling the story of the Jews in the 20th Century.

The first Episode is called, “The Dawn of the Century” and covers 1900 – 1910.

This episode introduces the uniqueness of Jewish history in the 20th century within the
context of world history. At the turn of the 20th century, Jews were scattered across the
globe, representing only ¼ of one percent of the worlds population. It was a time of
empires, imperial rule and colonial expansionism. In Russia the masses, including the
Jews, lived in dire poverty which was compounded by grassroots antisemitism. In 1905
the Russian masses revolted and there was a general strike. On Bloody Sunday the
Czar responded with force. The Czar did not abdicate until 1917, which is typically the
date given for the second Russian Revolution, which, in turn, led to increased pogroms
against the Jews. The pogroms and the economic conditions forced approximately
40% of Jewish population to leave the Russian Empire and go to Western countries
including the United States and to Palestine and other countries as far away as South
Africa and Australia.

Emigration and the Enlightenment presented Jews with the dilemma and opportunity to
maintain or reject their traditional Jewish upbringing, and many decided to forgo their
traditional Judaism and blend in with their larger non-Jewish society. Within the
traditional Jewish world, change was occurring as well, with the rise and acceptance of
the Mussar Movement, an ethical approach to Judaism. Because Jews were not
allowed into institutions of higher education in Eastern Europe, most of them went to
study in yeshivas to sharpen their intellect. The traditional yeshiva, unintentionally,
became a breeding ground for all philosophies, Jewish and secular alike. Zionism
grew as a national movement, and was led by secular Jews antithetical to traditional
Judaism. While most rabbis rejected Zionism and its leaders, because of their
nontraditional beliefs, a minority of rabbis developed religious Zionism, which combined
traditional Judaism with Zionist philosophy. The Old Yishuv Jews, who had settled in
Palestine in the late 1800s, were committed to traditional Judaism and rejected
secular, nationalistic ideas of the New Yishuv Zionists.

The Sephardic Jews living in Moslem and Arab countries at the turn of the 20th
Century maintained their own rich Jewish traditions and heritage, which often differed
from those of the Ashkenazim. There was relative peace within the Jewish community
and among the leadership in these Arab and Moslem countries, and although life was
sometimes difficult, these Sephardic Jews did not experience, by and large, pogroms
or the influences of the Enlightenment or Reform Judaism.

In Europe, Jews were the leaders of the Labor and Socialist movements and
spearheaded the establishment of labor unions in America. The challenge of
assimilation in the United States was the greatest difficulty confronting Jewish
immigrants. Attempts were made to stem the tide. Reform Judaism became a symbol
of acceptance into modern American society and Dr. Solomon Schechter initiated the
Universal Synagogue movement which became Conservative Judaism. Also
Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish immigrants had to find their respective places within
the Jewish community and in their new host country, the United States, as well..
A small, strong group of American Jewish immigrants managed to cling to their Jewish
traditions and adapt themselves to the new reality in America. Meanwhile, for Jews
around the world, with the threat of WWI looming, the imperial race for supremacy was
escalating

The Story of the Jews with Simon Schama

STAND WITH ISRAEL

SRAEL is the historic homeland of the Jewish people. God gave that land to the descendants of Abraham and Sarah, who are the Jews. The Bible says he’ll never break that covenant: Judges 2:1 “I brought you unto the land which I swore unto your fathers; and I said, I will Never break my covenant with you”. God set forth what he had done for Israel, and what he had promised.

The Chofetz Chaim was one of the most influential Rabbinic thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th century. Rabbi Israel Meir Kagan is known principally for his dramatically creative analysis of the topic of forbidden speech (lashon ha-ra), and rose to prominence as a major scholar-leader of the Jewish people. In this clip from The Story of the Jews, Simon Schama explores the origins of the Hebrew Bible, beginning with the emergence of the monotheistic Jewish God. For more, visit http://www.pbs.org/wnet/story-jews

The monotheistic God of the Jews, faceless, formless, invisible and very much on his own, was slow to emerge from the crowd of rival Gods worshipped in the ancient world. But when He did emerge, He would reside in a sacred inner sanctum, known as the ‘Holy of Holies’, which only the high priest was permitted to enter.

But there would be another way for the Jews to approach their God directly: the Hebrew Bible.

100 Years After First Jewish Aviator’s Death in Test Flight: Arthur Welsh Helped Wright Brothers

This Day in Jewish History / The first Jewish aviator dies in a plane crash
Haaretz
Arthur L. Welsh ran the flight school established by the Wright brothers and set numerous flight records. By David B. Green | Jun. 11, 2014 | 10:44 AM …

27.06.2012
America’s first professional Jewish aviator is being recognized here in the US state of Maryland for his extraordinary, yet largely unsung role, as as pioneer of early flight. One hundred years ago in the airfield adjacent to what is now College Park Aviation Museum a Jewish accountant turned professional aviator took to the skies for his final flight. Kyiv-born Russian-American Laibel Wellcher came to America aged 9, grew up in Philadelphia and Washington and as an adult changed his name to Arthur “Al” Welsh.

Al went on to train Henry “Hap” Arnold who became Commander of US Army Air Forces in World War II. Al was also part of the Wright brothers’ exhibition team, clocking up several speed and altitude records. But the Wright Brothers were really drawn to his professionalism in an ear when others were a little too flash and a little too brash. This replica model B in the museum demonstrates the vulnerability of the early fliers and it was in the next model “C” in which Al and his passenger Lieutenant Leighton Hazlehurst lost their lives in an army test flight.

Members of the Jewish community here are hoping that this centennial recognition will be the start of a broader understanding by the public of this magnificent man and his flying machine.

Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Dave Foley, and Martin Short contribute to this hilarious must-see documentary. David Steinberg—aptly described as a cross between Woody Allen and Lenny Bruce—took the comedy world by storm in the 1960s. Steinberg’s satiric, literate and defiantly Jewish material landed him on Nixon’s enemies list and on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show couch more than 100 times (second only to Bob Hope). Today, Steinberg is a sought after comedy director.
