Poland: Rivlin names Poland as “embodiment of Israel’s right to exist” at Jewish museum opening

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and his Israeli counterpart Reuven Rivlin formally inaugurated the Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw on Tuesday, almost a year and a half later after it first opened to the public.

Nicholas Winton

From Wikipedia,

Sir Nicholas George Winton, MBE (born Nicholas Wertheim; 19 May 1909)[5] is a British humanitarian who organised the rescue of 669, mostly Jewish, children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War, in an operation later known as the Czech Kindertransport. Winton found homes for the children and arranged for their safe passage to Britain.[6] The British press has dubbed him the “British Schindler”.[7]

Nicholas Winton was born in 1909 Hampstead, London, a son of German Jewish parents who had moved to London two years earlier.[8] The family name had been Wertheim, but they changed it to Winton in an effort at integration.[1] They also converted toChristianity, and Winton was baptised.[9]

In 1923, Winton entered Stowe School, which had just opened.[10] He left without graduating, attending night school while volunteering at the Midland Bank. He then went to Hamburg, where he worked at Behrens Bank, followed by Wasserman Bank inBerlin.[8] In 1931, he moved to France and worked for the Banque Nationale de Crédit in Paris. He also earned a banking qualification in France. Returning to London, he became a broker at the London Stock Exchange.

Sir Nicholas Winton, the ‘British Schindler’ who saved hundreds of children from the Nazis receives the Czech Republic’s highest honour at the age of 105

A British man who smuggled hundreds of Jewish children out of Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939 was awarded the Order of the White Lion in Prague on Tuesday.

Sir Nicholas Winton, 105, was presented with the award by President of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman for saving the lives of hundreds of young Jews.

Following the German annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938, Winton arranged transport for 669 children, most of them Jewish, from Czechoslovakia through Germany to Britain ahead of the outbreak of World War II.

The first transport left on 14 March 1939, the day before the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, according to the Holocaust Memorial Museum.

A final train load of 250 children, due to depart on 3 September 1939, was prevented from leaving when Poland was invaded.

The children were taken by train to foster families in England who were willing to put up the then-huge sum of 50 pounds sterling and had agreed to look after them until they were 17.

Sir Nicholas was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003.

Celebrate ‘Simchat Torah’ with Steve Kuban in Jerusalem — Pure Joy at the Feast of Tabernacles!

I ventured into the heart of Jerusalem on the final night of the Feast of Tabernacles (Feast of Sukkot). What incredible joy in the heart of the Jewish people! On the eighth and final night of the week-long Festival is a celebration known as “Simchat Torah.” Come join me in these these very precious moments of exhilaration, as young people and elders (even the elderly Rabbi’s!) dance and celebrate with the sacred Torah scrolls (which are taken out of the synagogues ONLY on this one day each year) with unrestrained joy in celebration of their love for the God’s revealed law, the Torah.

The live band is fabulous! Please keep watching to the end to hear some of the best Jewish music ever!

Shalom,

With love, from Israel!

Steve Kuban

The white picnic flash mob that originated in Paris is now taking hold in Tel Aviv.
“Diner en Blanc” is flash-mob-style picnic event started in Paris 25 years ago. Everybody dresses in white and eats off white tablecloths. And now Diner en Blanc has come to Tel Aviv!
Says host Shahar Cohen: “I see all these people that came and met together not for any cause, only to sit together and have a good time. People came from different places, with different foods and different beliefs and not because of religion and not because of anything else, only because they want to sit together and enjoy themselves from a really nice and quality evening.”
