Viaje a Israel 2010

Strictly Kosher 1,2,3
All rights belong to ITV.
The Jewish community in Manchester is a kaleidoscope of tradition, religion and extravagance. This documentary film opens a window into their lives and shows a wide variety of ritual and celebrations.
Strictly Kosher, filmed, produced and directed by Chris Malone, revolves around three families and their friends and paints a colourful picture of the juxtaposition between the many different personalities and levels of religious observance in Manchester’s Jewish community. It offers an insight into lifestyles which range from one extreme — traditional and strict – to the other — modern and extravagant – but are bound together by one faith.
The film follows Bernette Clarke, a very lively and modern Orthodox Jewish mother of three. Bernette talks openly about her faith, explains the traditional approach her family has to the Sabbath and other Jewish festivals, and offers her views on the wider Jewish community.
Joel Lever and his wife Joanne also allow the cameras into their lives. Joel’s family are traditionally Jewish by birth, but he admits they are not very religious. Joel puts his all into his fashion boutique ‘Mon Amie’ which is frequented by the Jewish ladies of Prestwich — by making the Jewish women the talk of the town, he feels he is serving the local community.
83-year-old Jack Aizenberg tells the ultimate rags to riches story. He was just eleven years old at the outbreak of the Second World War and his family were killed in Belzec Extermination camp in 1942 when he was just 14. Against the odds Jack survived and made his way to Manchester, England in 1945. Jack feels that religion is not as important as basic common humanity and does not practice all the requirements of the Jewish faith, but he’s a celebrated survivor venerated by the Jewish community in Manchester. Having made a successful career in the luggage trade, Jack is thrilled to have the money to throw his grandson a lavish Bar Mitzvah — a special moment caught on camera.

Musical event to honour teen who died of cancer
Canadian Jewish News (blog)
In memory of Olivia Wise, the Liv Wise Foundation has created the inaugural Liv, Love & Lyrics event celebrating Wise’s passion for music and singing ..
Olivia Wise – Roar (Katy Perry cover)
Olivia Wise has Brain Cancer. She came into a recording studio for her first time and recorded the Katy Perry song Roar. She couldn’t walk or stand, she didn’t have her full breath or the energy she used to, and she was managing her new pains and new limitations. While her physical condition was rapidly fading, her spirit remained untouched.
Olivia is a fighter and has gone through the fire, in fact, she was going through the fire while she recorded this song, but you wouldn’t know it, because she was dancing right through it. She is an inspiration, a champion, and my hero. This is her Roar.
Thanks to Jon Levine and Matt Marek.
Love you Liv,
UPDATE: Olivia Wise passed away on November 25, 2013

Chabad Home for Orphan Boys
Jewish orphan finds new life with Indian savior
Tel Aviv, Israel (CNN) — In a scene his parents would have been heartened to see, family and friends recently thronged around young Moshe Holtzberg as men in black suits and black hats took turns cutting locks of hair from the boy’s head on a stage in a rented party tent outside Tel Aviv, Israel.
The celebration marked Moshe’s third birthday and in Hasidic Judaism tradition he received a haircut to symbolize his readiness to begin his religious education.
Standing not 10 feet away and watching closely was Sandra Samuel, the Indian nanny who one year ago saved Moshe’s life.
Samuel was working as a nanny for Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg when the Jewish Chabad Center they ran in Mumbai, India, came under attack by terrorists.
Samuel survived the attack and rescued Moshe who she found crying, standing between the bodies of his parents.
Since that fateful day she has not left Moshe’s side. Samuel accompanied him to Israel where, with her help, he is now being taken care of by his grandparents and extended family.
A year on Sandra said the memories of Mumbai and Moshe’s parents still haunt her. Holding back tears, she said, “I feel happy for the baby, but I am very sad, more than sad, I think.”
Jewish orphan finds new life The pain she feels remembering the horror of the attack is tempered by the great progress she has seen Moshe make since his arrival in Israel just days after his parents were killed.
“He has adjusted very very well and is like a normal kid. He goes to school, he plays, he jumps. He has a lot of friends. His life is normal,” she said.
Moshe’s paternal grandfather Rabbi Nachman Holtzberg said Samuel has been like a surrogate mother. “She knows everything about him, all the natural things because she has known (him) since he was a small child. Things are getting better and better.”
Holtzberg added that the entire family rallied together to help Moshe adapt to life without his parents and believes his son would be pleased. “I’m sure that my son would be here now and looking at how I take care of him. He would be happy.”
Samuel, a mother of two grown children, said she was trying to spend less time with Moshe so he could better adapt to his family and sees herself returning home to India within two years — though she said she would stay in Israel for as long as Moshe needed her.
Samuel said her message was simple: “To carry on life. Be strong and that’s it. Put everything in God’s hands.”

Diner En Blanc and mre…
The white picnic flash mob that originated in Paris is now taking hold in Tel Aviv.
“Diner en Blanc” is flash-mob-style picnic event started in Paris 25 years ago. Everybody dresses in white and eats off white tablecloths. And now Diner en Blanc has come to Tel Aviv!
Says host Shahar Cohen: “I see all these people that came and met together not for any cause, only to sit together and have a good time. People came from different places, with different foods and different beliefs and not because of religion and not because of anything else, only because they want to sit together and enjoy themselves from a really nice and quality evening.”
