Session Info:
Though not a work of philosophy, the Talmud is full of philosophical ideas, questions, and answers about the meaning of existence (“Why are we here? Why are we Jewish? Where are we heading?”), the relationship between Heaven and Earth, the purpose of Mitzvot, and the path to a moral and ethical life.
Howard N. Lupovitch is Associate Professor of History and the director of Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University.
Jack Mayer Oral History Interview
Oral history interview with Holocaust survivor Jack Mayer. Mayer was born in Speyer, Germany, in 1930 and lived there with his parents and older brother. After Hitler came to power in 1933, German Jews became increasingly restricted, which the Mayer children perceived at their young ages. Gentile friends would no longer play with them, they could not go to the movies, and they had to go to a Jewish school at their synagogue. They already had two uncles in the United States, who began making arrangements to get their relatives out of Germany. Mayer’s father came in early 1937 and started saving money for their visas and travel arrangements, borrowing money from members of the local Jewish community. Mayer and his mother and brother arrived in Ohio in April 1938. Due to his uncles’ foresight, none of their relatives died in the Holocaust. They still faced discrimination in the United States, but not because they were Jewish; people were wary of German immigrants during the war. In this interview, Mayer also discusses his experiences during the March of the Living, which he has done twice.

Ark Shanghai – A History of Jewish Refugees in Shanghai (Part 1)

From 1933 to 1941, Shanghai became a modern-day “Noah’s Ark” accepting around 30,000 Jewish refugees fleeing the Holocaust in Europe. In the “Designated Area for Stateless Refugees” in Tilanqiao area of Shanghai, about 20,000 Jewish refugees lived harmoniously with local citizens, overcoming numerous difficulties together. By the time the Second World War ended in 1945, most of the Jewish refugees had survived. Dr. David Kranzler, a noted Holocaust historian, called it the “Miracle of Shanghai” and commented that within the Jewry’s greatest tragedy, i.e. the Holocaust, there shone a few bright lights. Among the brightest of these is the Shanghai haven. In the “Tilanqiao Historic Area”, the original features of the Jewish settlement are still well preserved. They are the only typical historic traces of Jewish refugee life inside China during the Second World War.

Abba Kovner was born on March 14, 1918, in the Crimean Black Sea port city of Sevastopol. His parents were Rachel (Rosa) Taubman and Israel Kovner. At a young age he moved with his family to Vilnius, which at this time was part of Poland, where he grew up and was educated at the secondary Hebrew academy and the school of the arts. According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be “the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists”. Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN, and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. Bess Myerson (July 16, 1924 – December 14, 2014) was an American model, television actress, politician, and civil rights activist who was crowned Miss America in 1945.
At the time of her death, Myerson was the only Jewish Miss America. Myerson won the Miss America beauty pageant at a time when World War II had just ended. Myerson’s winning the title of Miss America took on heightened significance in light of newly emerging information about the Holocaust. Minnie (c. 1923 [1]– October 31, 1976) and Clara Bagelman (October 17, 1920 – November 22, 2014),[2] best known under the stage names Merna and Claire Barry, were popular American Klezmer and jazz entertainers from the 1940s to the early 1970s.
Minnie and Clara were born in the Bronx, New York to Ashkenazi Jewish parents, Herman and Ester, from Russia and Austria, respectively, and two younger sisters, Celia and Julia. When Minnie and Clara decided to entertain by singing in Yiddish, as The Bagelman Sisters, their father told them they would need to do it in the manner of the Old World and not with American accents.[3]Photo by Wikipedia

“Hava Nagila” (הבה נגילהHavah Nagilah, “Let us rejoice”) is an Israeli folk song. It is perhaps the first modern Israeli folk song in the Hebrew language that has become a staple of band performers at Jewish weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. It was composed in 1920s Palestine at a time when Hebrew was first being revived as a spoken language for the first time in 2,000 years (in other words, since 70 CE, the destruction of the Second Temple). For the first time, Palestinian Jews were being encouraged to speak Hebrew as a common language, instead of Yiddish, Arabic, Ladino, or other regional Jewish languages

Novelist, playwright, journalist, essayist, and editor, Sholem Aleichem was one of the founding giants of modern Yiddish literature. The creator of a pantheon of extraordinary characters, his literature provided readers with a window into the world of Eastern European Jews as they confronted the forces of modernity that tore through Russia at the end of the 19th century. But just as compelling as the fictional lives of his characters, was Sholem Aleichem’s own life story. Born Sholem Rabinovitch in Ukraine in 1859, he endured an impoverished childhood, married into wealth, and then lost it all through bad luck and worse business sense. Turning to his pen to support himself, he switched from writing in Russian and Hebrew to Yiddish in order to create a living body of literature for the Jewish masses. Jonathan Brent, Executive Director at YIVO, Jeremy Dauber, author of the recently published book, ‘The Worlds of Sholem Aleichem: The Remarkable Life and Afterlife of the Man Who Created Tevye’, and Adam Kirsch joined each other on stage for a lively discussion about the fascinating life and work of the “Jewish Mark Twain.”

Di Shekhter-tekhter / The Schaechter Sisters gave their premiere performance as a sister duo in Paris in February 2008 (at age 13 and 8) and have given many performances in Yiddish (English translations provided) around the world since then, including in Australia, Israel, Toronto, and across the USA.
A documentary film . concert video was recently made of them, “When Our Bubbas and Zeydas Were Young: The Schaechter Sisters on Stage”, in Yiddish with English subtitles, directed by the Academy-award-nominated documentary filmmaker, Josh Waletzky. Tu Bishvat (Hebrew: טו בשבט) is a Jewish holiday occurring on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat (in 2014, Tu Bishvat began at sunset on 15 January and ended at nightfall on 16 January). It is also called “Rosh HaShanah La’Ilanot” (Hebrew: ראש השנה לאילנות), literally “New Year of the Trees.” In contemporary Israel, the day is celebrated as an ecological awareness day, and trees are planted in celebration.

Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Brooklyn
http://israelvideosfeed.comBorough Park (usually spelled Boro Park by its residents), is a neighborhood in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City in the United States; Borough Park covers an extensive grid of streets between Bay Ridge and Prospect Park. Borough Park had its beginnings in a few streets of cottages called “Blythebourne” erected in 1887 by the speculative builder, Electus B. Litchfield.Another developer, William Reynolds, built more speculative housing in the area, which was served by a steam railroad, the Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island West End Line.
Borough Park is home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities outside of Israel, with one of the largest concentrations of Jews in the United States, and Orthodox traditions rivaling many insular communities. Since the average number of children in Hasidic and Hareidi families is 6.72, Borough Park is experiencing sharp growth. It is an economically diverse area, with rich, working class and poor people living side-by-side and going to the same schools and synagogues.
Its heart lies between 9th and 18th Avenues and 40th and 61st Streets. Borough Park is patrolled by the NYPD’s 66th [6] Precinct and by Boro Park Shomrim Citizen Safety Patrol

Philanthropist and businessman Shlomo Rechnitz was interviewed in a “Profiles in Philanthropy” special by Larry King. Highlights of this interview were featured on the 2012 Chabad Telethon.
King and Rechnitz discuss the motivation behind Rechnitz’s massive global charitable efforts, the secret behind his business success, his views on the future of the healthcare industry and his commitment to Chabad. Rechnitz also talked about a special program at his company, TwinMed, LLC, which hires graduates from Chabad’s national drug and alcohol treatment center in Los Angeles, helping to integrate them back into the community.
Rechnitz co-founded TwinMed in 1998, and it has grown to become the largest medical supply distributor of the West Coast and one of the nation’s fastest growing distributors of medical supplies and services, serving as the primary distributor to over 2500 Skilled Nursing Facilities nationwide. In 2004, Rechnitz founded Brius Healthcare Company, a quality care provider with over 8,000 employees nationwide.
Rechnitz has utilized his success in the healthcare field to give back to the field of medicine, and has contributed millions of dollars to cancer research. He is President of Toras Emes Academy, the largest Hebrew Day School west of the Mississippi, and is Chairman of the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation in New York. In 2011, Shlomo and his brother Steve were the winners of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of The Year Award. In May 2012, Rechnitz was honored by UCLA with Sidney Poitier, Terry Semel and Morgan Freeman when he received the ICON Award for Visionary Leadership in Business and Philanthropy.
In August 2012, Rechnitz hosted the largest celebration of Jewish learning since the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D., when 90,000 Jews gathered at New York’s MetLife Stadium to celebrate the completion of the study of Talmud, a rigorous seven-and-a-half-year-long cycle of Talmudic learning.
In September, Rechnitz was featured at the Chabad National Telethon as the recipient of the Chesed Award, Chabad’s most prominent award.
Rechnitz is a pillar of the Los Angeles community, where he spends much of his time engaged in philanthropic and community efforts in the field of education, medical and humanitarian assistance.

Angela Merkel Attends Tolerance Rally as Germany’s Anti-Islam Movement Grows

Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Joachim Gauck and other German leaders made an appearance at a Berlin rally organized by Muslim groups Tuesday, in contrast with the growing tide of anti-Islamic sentiment in the country. According to BBC News, the event was a vigil for the victims of last week’s terror attacks in Paris held by the Central Council of Muslims in Germany at Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate. Also in attendance were a host of German politicians, Christian leaders and representatives of Germany’s Central Jewish Council. During the vigil, Muslim officials recited verses from the Quran, including passages that condemn violence, and various religious leaders and political figures addressed the crowd of several hundred. A moment of silence was held for those who lost their lives in the tragedy in Paris.

“Erzähl es deinen Kindern: Die Torah in fünf Bänden” – ein Beitrag von Kristina Dumas, sowie die Parascha “Wajechi” von Joel Berger.
Es gibt eine direkte Verbindung zwischen dem Ende des Wochenabschnitts Schemot und dem Beginn des Wochenabschnitts Wa‘era. Am Ende von Schemot, erscheinen Mosche und Aharon gemeinsam vor Pharao und präsentieren die Aufforderung G-ttes: „Lass mein Volk ziehen, auf dass es in der Wildnis für Mich feiern möge.“ [Schemot 5:1]
Doch Pharaos Reaktion ist nicht nur, dass er die Juden nicht fortziehen lassen möchte, sondern er ist auch entschlossen, ihr Leben noch schwerer zu machen. Während Pharao zuvor die Juden mit Stroh beliefert hat, um die Ziegelsteine herzustellen, würden sie von nun an dieselbe Menge Ziegelsteine herstellen müssen, während sie ihr Stroh selbst einzusammeln hätten. Somit erschien Mosches erster Besuch in Pharaos Palast kontraproduktiv.
Leute aus dem Volk – gemäss unserer Weisen, Datan und Awiram – kritisierten Mosche und liessen ihn unmissverständlich wissen, dass er die Probleme nur verschlimmert habe. Mosche war bestürzt über diesen Rückschlag. Er hinterfragte G-tt hinsichtlich der Wirksamkeit seiner Mission. Dies ist das Fazit des fünften Kapitels des Wochenabschnitts Schemot.
Kapitel 6 wiederum (letzter Vers von Parschat Schemot) beginnt wie folgt: „Haschem sprach zu Mosche: ‚Jetzt wirst du sehen, was ich Pharao antun werde, denn durch eine starke (Meiner starken) Hand wird er sie ausweisen, und durch eine starke (seiner starken) Hand wird er sie aus seinem Land vertreiben.“ [Schemot 6:1]. Nach unseren Weisen (hebr. Chasal), war der Allmächtige zornig auf Mosche, weil dieser Ihn beschuldigt hatte, „die Situation verschlimmert zu haben“.
Teile des jüdischen Volkes zeigten eine ausserordentlich natürliche und verständliche Reaktion. Wir als menschliche Wesen sind an Zeit und Raum gebunden. Unsere Sicht auf das Leben ist äusserst schmal. Wir sehen das Hier und Jetzt, aber nichts darüber hinaus. Es ist in etwa so, als würde man sich einem schönen Bild nähern und so nah heranrücken, dass man nur noch einen kleinen Ausschnitt dessen sieht, was das Bild ausmacht. Der einzige Weg, ein Bild geniessen zu können, besteht darin, es mit ausreichendem Abstand zu betrachten und es in seiner Ganzheit auf sich wirken zu lassen.
Dies ist vielleicht, was der Talmud [Berachot 10a] meint, wenn es ein Wortspiel macht mit dem Vers: „Ejn Zur Ke’Elokejnu – Es gibt keinen G-tt (hebr. Zur, wörtl. Felsen) wie unseren G-tt“ [Schmuel I, 2:2]. Der Talmud interpretiert diesen Vers wie folgt: „Es gibt keinen Künstler (hebr. Zajar, wörtl. Maler) wie unseren G-tt.“ G-tt befindet sich inmitten Seiner Arbeit an einem Gemälde – doch nicht eines, das sich von einer Wand zur anderen erstreckt, sondern vom Beginn bis zum Ende der Zeit. Oftmals verhalten wir uns wie jemand, der sich (wie mit einer Lupe) einem winzigen Abschnitt des Gemäldes nähert und versucht, der daraus ersichtlichen Botschaft des Künstlers einen Sinn abzugewinnen.
Dies ist, was mit den Juden in Ägypten geschehen ist, nachdem Mosche seine erste Begegnung mit Pharao nach dessen Rückkehr nach Ägypten hatte. Die Hoffnungen des Volkes waren genährt und gestiegen, nur um kurze Zeit später zerschmettert zu werden. Nicht nur, dass sich ihre Situation nicht gebessert hatte, sondern sie wurde sogar schlimmer! Sie betrachteten eine Momentaufnahme – einen Schnappschuss – und nicht das Gesamtbild.
Im Endeffekt stellte das jüdische Volk die altbekannte Frage: Warum geht es den schlechten Menschen so gut und den guten Menschen so schlecht? Es gibt tatsächlich keine umfassende, irdische Antwort auf diese Frage, doch ein Teil der Antwort besteht darin, dass wir nur eine Momentaufnahme sehen – und nicht das ganze Bild. Aus diesem Grund hinterfragen wir es.
Der Midrasch besagt, dass wenn ein Mensch die Wege der g-ttlichen Vorsehung verstehen möchte, er im übertragenen (metaphorischen) Sinne verwirrt wird zwischen dem Anblick des „Unglücks und der Bandage“. Rabbi Jehoschua ben Levi erklärt, dass das Wesen des Allmächtigen nicht dem eines Menschen aus Fleisch und Blut entspricht: Ein Chirurg schneidet mit einem Skalpell, doch er heilt mit Stichen, Bandagen und Medizin. Der Chirurg heilt nicht mit dem Instrument, mit dem er schneidet. Der Allmächtge jedoch bringt die Heilung mit demselben Instrument, das er verwendet, um die Plage auszulösen – wie wir an Josef sehen können: Er wurde wegen seiner Träume in die Sklaverei verkauft (wie die Brüder sagten: „Hier kommt der Träumer“) und er wurde durch Träume in den Adelsstand (zum Vizekönig) erhoben – dank seiner Fähigkeit, die Träume Pharaos zu interpretieren.
Wenn wir inmitten der Geschichte über den rechtschaffenen Josef anhalten würden, kämen wir zur Schlussfolgerung, dass Träume sein Verhängnis waren. Doch wie der Midrasch aufzeigt, ist er über Träume an die Macht in Ägypten gelangt. Der scheinbare Ursprung des Problems entpuppte sich als die grösste Quelle der Heilung.
Raw Simcha Sissel Brody, der Rosch Jeschiwa (das Oberhaupt der Talmudschule) von Chewron, s.A., hörte den folgenden Gedanken von Raw Mosche Mordechai Epstein, dem Rosch Jeschiwa von Slobodka, s.A.: Man stelle sich vor, wie es gewesen sein muss, die Spanische Inquisition zu durchleben. Man stelle sich vor, wie es gewesen sein muss, am 9. Aw 1492 ein Jude gewesen zu sein. Spanische Juden wurden vor die Wahl gestellt, zum Christentum zu konvertieren oder mittellos das Land zu verlassen. 300‘000 Juden verliessen lieber mittellos das Land, als zum Christentum zu konvertieren.
Nach all dem, was die Juden der spanischen Gesellschaft beigetragen hatten (der Finanzminister Don Isaak Abarbanel hatte einen Grossteil seines Privatvermögens aufgewendet, um die Regierung des Königspaares Ferdinand und Isabella zu finanzieren), war es eine unfassbare Ungerechtigkeit, was die Spanier den Juden antaten. Was spielte sich wohl in den Köpfen der Juden jener Zeit ab? Was würden du und ich denken, wenn wir als Juden in dieser Ära leben würden? Wahrscheinlich würden wir denken: „Spanien wird es zurückbekommen! Der Allmächtige wird es ihnen vor unser aller Augen heimzahlen!“
Stattdessen segelte Kolumbus an genau diesem Tag – dem 9. Aw 1492 – hinaus aufs Meer und machte die grösste Entdeckung, die je ein Land in den vergangenen 500 Jahren gemacht hatte! Die Entdeckung der Neuen Welt und all der Rohstoffe machte Spanien zu einem grossen, wohlhabenden und mächtigen Land – der Supermacht in der Welt jener Tage! Es dauerte fast 100 Jahre – also weit über die Lebenszeit der ins Exil vertriebenen Juden hinaus, dass die Spanische Armada besiegt wurde. Die Vertriebenen hatten das nicht mehr mitbekommen. Sie gingen mit dem Gedanken ins Grab: „Dies ist die Thora und dies ist ihr Lohn? Ist dies die Gerechtigkeit des Allmächtigen, dass Spanien diesen grossen Coup landen sollte – ausgerechnet an jenem Tag, an dem sie uns rausgeschmissen haben?“
Doch die Ironie an der Sache ist, dass „jene, die Er schlägt, Er auch heilt.“ Die Ironie ist, dass Spanien dem jüdischen Volk eines der grössten Gefallen getan hat, die ihm jemals getan wurden: Sie entdeckten Amerika! Etwa 300 Jahre lang konnten Juden problemlos nach Amerika einwandern. Als es keinen anderen Ort gab, wo man hingehen konnte – vor und nach dem Holocaust – war Amerika der Rettungsanker für Abertausende Juden. Amerika war auch das rettende Ufer für Tausende Juden, die zur Jahrhundertwende Russland verliessen, anstatt sich mit den Pogromen des zaristischen Russlands auseinandersetzen zu müssen. Amerika rettete einen grossen Teil des jüdischen Volkes.
Wer war dafür verantwortlich? Die spanische Regierung, die als Instrument des Schöpfers dieser Welt fungierte. Doch dies dauerte 400 Jahre! Von 1492 bis zum späten 19. Jahrhundert vergingen 400 Jahre! Man stelle sich vor, dass man diese Welt mit dem Gefühl verlässt, es gäbe in ihr keine Gerechtigkeit, weil niemand 400 Jahre lebt.
Dies ist die Lektion der g-ttlichen Vorsehung (hebr. Haschgacha). Es gibt keinen Zur (G-tt) wie unseren G-tt. Es gibt keinen Zajar (Künstler bzw. Maler) wie unseren G-tt. Es ist noch immer ein unvollendetes Werk, das sich in Arbeit befindet, denn die Geschichte wird weiterhin geschrieben.
Das jüdische Volk beschwerte sich bei Mosche Rabbejnu: „Du hast die Situation verschlimmert! Jetzt müssen wir noch mehr leiden!“ Sie erkannten jedoch nicht, dass ihr zunehmendes Leid (die gleiche Anzahl Ziegelsteine ohne geliefertes Stroh herstellen zu müssen) ihnen 190 Jahre der ursprünglich verhängten Sklaverei ersparte. Statt 400 Jahre in Ägypten verbringen zu müssen, mussten sie nur 210 Jahre bleiben. Als was für ein Gefallen sich das herausstellte! Doch es gab viele Juden, die ins Grab gingen, ohne jemals erkannt zu haben, dass weil sie das Bild nur aus nächster Nähe betrachtet hatten, ihnen der volle Verlauf der Geschichte nicht ersichtlich war.
Die Lehre aus Ägypten und die Lehre aus Spanien – und mit G-ttes Hilfe mögen wir auch eines Tages den Sinn des Holocaust erkennen – ist, dass dies die Wege des Allmächtigen sind. Wir müssen warten. Es ist sehr schwer für uns, besonders wenn man leidet. Doch eines Tages, mit G-ttes Hilfe, wird alles einen Sinn machen.

לקראת פרשת וארא אולפני ר’ חיים בנט עם מקהלת הילדים “רננו חסידים” שחררו שיר מיוחד של “בא אל פרעה כי אני הכבדתי את לבו”, הלחן מיוחד ומלא הומור והוקלט בחודש האחרון לראשונה , של נוסח עתיק ששמעו בבית משפחת שטנצל של בא אל פרעה כי אני הכבדתי את לבו.
שיר זה היה נוהג לשיר מזכה הרבים רבי שלמה שטנצל זצ”ל, בעקבות פטירתו בנו בעל התפילה הרב יונתן שטנצל החליט להקליט שיר זה על מנת ששיר זה, יהיה לנחלת הכלל, וגייס לעניין את מקהלת “נרננה” ואת המעבד המוכשר איתן פרישברג , את ר’ חיים בנט שגייס את מקהלת “רננו חסידים”

With a packed house and a warm and welcoming audience, the three of us – Yossi Malovany, Yakov Motzen, and myself, shared with the public our life stories in songs, which our mentor and teacher, the beloved Hazzan Shlomo Ravitz Z’L had entrenched in us.
This Cantorial selection is but one of the many prayers we studied as children way back then in 1950’s Tel Aviv. More clips to come.

A standing-room-only crowd attended an event last night celebrating the 80th anniversary of the passing of the greatest chazzan of all-time at the very Shul where he was Bal Tefillah for five years.
An unforgettable evening celebrating the music of Chazzan Yossele Rosenblatt was held at the First Congregation Anshei Sfard of Boro Park, featuring five of the world’s top Chazzanim.
Performers included Cantor Yaakov Yosef Shtark, who sang the Memorial Prayer in tribute to Rosenblatt; Cantor Yaakov Motzen, who led Maariv; Cantor Binyomin Muller from Antwerp; and Cantors Yaakov Rosenfeld and Yaakov Lemmer, both of Brooklyn.
A surprise guest appearance by rising star, Cantor Usher Bloomberg, was also a highlight.
Monday marks the 80th anniversary of the passing of Chazzan Yossele Rosenblatt, who tragically died at the age of 51 while on a visit to Eretz Yisrael.
Organizers said the event drew such large crowds that people had to be turned away.
The talent coordinator for the evening, Cantor Benny Rogosnitsky said, “What an immense and moving tribute to the greatest Chazzan who ever lived in the very shul where he davened for close to five years. When the Chazzanim sang, you could hear a pin drop. Yossele would have been proud.”
In his remarks Rabbi Yechiel Kaufman, the Rav of the shul, lauded Rosenblatt’s piousness and religiosity and spoke movingly of his contribution to the world of Tefillah.
After the event, a still glowing Cantor Rogosnitsky said, “Last night was a testament to the fact that eighty years later, Chazzanus lives on, and looking around at the many young faces in the audience and the young talent in the program, there is great hope and promise for the future.”

Baal HaSulam – the great 20th century Kabbalist – wrote songs and composed melodies as expressions of his spiritual attainments. His music comes to us directly from the spiritual worlds, and has a deep emotional connection with the rises and falls a Kabbalist experiences in his coming into contact with spirituality. Many of his melodies are composed to text fragments from The Zohar and other Kabbalah texts, such as Bnei Heichala (words by the Ari), Ki Chilatzta Nafshi (words attributed by many to King David; others say the court of King David), Tzadik ke Tamar Ifrach, Chasal Seder Pesach, LeHagid ba Boker Hasdecha, and Kel Mistater.

Hundreds of People gathered Monday night November 10 2014, for Bonei Olam’s third dinner in Montreal, featuring inspiring speakers and entertainment by Kuppy Elbogen and the Zimra men’s choir along with Zimra’s brand new boys choir.
Bonei Olam is a New York based organization that helps Jewish couples with fertility problems from all over the world by providing funding for fertility treatments and connecting the couple with experts from both the medical and Halachic standpoint as well as support in the form of groups as well as professionals. To date, Bonei Olam has been involved in the birth of over 5000 babies, including many from the Montreal and Tosh communities, where a small branch exists, connecting locals to fertility experts in the area.
Kuppy Elbogen and the Zimra Men’s and Boy’s Choir performed a mix of Yiddish songs specially written for the event.

Local residents in Verviers, in the east of the Belgium, reported hearing a fusillade of machine gun shots and explosions on Thursday evening.
Amateur video captured from across the street shows smoke coming from a house as shouts and sustained gunfire can be heard.
Police have confirmed that the raid was an anti-terror operation following intelligence that an active terror cell was planning an imminent attack. The country’s prosecutor said that two people were killed and one injured in the assault.

At least 10 people were killed in a shooting at the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper firebombed in the past after publishing cartoons joking about Muslim leaders, French TV channel iTELE reported.
France Info radio also said police had confirmed a toll of 10 dead and five injured. Reuters had no immediate official confirmation of deaths.
The news channel quoted a witness as saying he saw the incident from a building nearby in the heart of the French capital.
“About a half an hour ago two black-hooded men entered the building with Kalashnikovs (guns),” Benoit Bringer told the station. “A few minutes later we heard lots of shots,” he said, adding that the men were then seen fleeing the building.
A police official, Luc Poignant, said he was aware of one journalist dead and several injured, including three police officers.
“It’s carnage,” Poignant told BFM TV.
A firebomb attack gutted the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo in November 2011 after it put an image of the Prophet Mohammad on its cover.

Hallmark pulls gift wrap after swastika complaint | The Now

Hallmark Cards Inc. has removed blue and silver gift wrap from circulation after a California customer complained that she saw a swastika embedded in the design.
The Kansas City, Missouri-based company alerted retailers to the problem Monday after receiving a complaint Sunday night from a Walgreen’s customer in Northridge, California. The disputed wrap was featured in a Hanukkah display but Hallmark spokeswoman Julie Elliott says the gift wrap wasn’t intended for the Jewish holiday.
The Kansas City Star reports the gift wrap was distributed by Walgreen’s, which is no longer selling it.
Elliott said in a news release that Hallmark didn’t intend to offend anyone.

In clashes today between Israeli Forces and Arab rioters in Judea and Samaria, one of the Arabs, Ziad Abu Ein, a Minister in the PA, clutched his chest and collapsed.
The IDF on the scene provided assistance to Abu Ein but they were unable to resuscitate him.
In spite of Israeli efforts to save the Arab Minister(*), the “Palestinians” are claiming he was assassinated by Israel. The motivation behind this claim is to provoke and fan the flames in the area even more and to maintain the hatred towards Israelis in the “Arab” community.
* REMINDER:
In 1979, Abu Ein was found guilty of belonging to a cell that planted a bomb in Tiberias that exploded and killed two people, including 16-year-old Israeli Boaz Lahav. He was extradited to Israel from the United States two years later and received a life sentence, but was released in the 1985 Jibril prisoner exchange, and never expressed any regrets.

Près de 2.000 personnes ont assisté ce mardi à Jérusalem aux funérailles des quatre Français juifs tués vendredi porte de Vincennes à Paris.
Une foule considérable composée des proches anéantis, d’officiels et d’anonymes français et israéliens s’est rassemblée à la mi-journée dans l’immense cimetière du Har Hamenouhot (mont du Repos) où ont été enterrés Yohav Hattab, Yohan Cohen, Philippe Braham et François-Michel Saada. Le Premier ministre israélien Benjamin Netanyahu a participé aux funérailles. La France y était représentée par la ministre Ségolène Royal.

Manuel Valls intervient le 13 janvier 2015 devant l’Assemblée nationale pour rendre un hommage solennel aux victimes des attentats contre Charlie Hebdo, la policière de Montrouge et l’Hypercacher de Vincennes.
Il a fait part de sa colère et de son indignation contre la haine des Juifs :
– “Comment accepter qu’en France, terre d’émancipation des juifs, il y a deux siècles, mais qui fut aussi, il y a 70 ans, l’une des terres de son martyre, comment peut-on accepter que l’on puisse entendre dans nos rues crier ‘mort aux Juifs’ ?”
– “Nous devons là aussi nous rebeller, et en posant le vrai diagnostic. Il y a un antisémitisme que l’on dit historique remontant du fond des siècles mais il y a surtout ce nouvel antisémitisme qui est né dans nos quartiers sur fond d’internet, de paraboles, de misère, sur fond de détestation de l’État d’Israël, et qui prône la haine du juif, et de tous les juifs. Il faut le dire. Il faut poser les mots pour combattre cet antisémitisme inacceptable”.
– “Oui, disons-le à la face du monde, sans les Juifs de France, la France ne serait plus la France”.

PARIS – Un individu armé a pris
plusieurs personnes en otages dans un supermarché casher de la
porte de Vincennes, dans le XIIe arrondissement de Paris, a
annoncé la Préfecture de police.
Selon le numéro deux du syndicat de policiers Alliance à
Paris, Emmanuel Quemener, l’homme équipé d’armes automatiques,
retiendrait cinq personnes dans ce magasin et répondrait au
signalement du tireur qui a abattu jeudi une policière à
Montrouge.
Une personne au moins a été blessée, précise-t-on de source

Deux hommes, lourdement armés, ont attaqué mercredi en fin de matinée le siège de Charlie Hebdo à Paris. La fusillade aurait fait de nombreuses victimes.
2h16 : Les informations sont confuses. Selon i-Télé, il y aurait au moins 10 morts et 5 blessés. Une source policière annonce qu’il aurait un mort.
12h05 : “Vers 11h30, deux hommes armés d’une kalachnikov et d’un lance-roquette, ont fait irruption au siège de Charlie Hebdo dans le XIe arrondissement de Paris. Un échange de feu a eu lieu avec les forces de l’ordre”, a expliqué une source à l’AFP.
En quittant les lieux, les deux agresseurs ont blessé par balle un policier. Ils ont ensuite braqué un automobiliste porte de Pantin et percuté un piéton.
