NYPD: Man Throws Molotov Cocktail Near Yeshiva Students, Threatens to Kill Them

Police are looking for the man who threw a Molotov cocktail near two Yeshiva University students and then threatened them in Manhattan over the weekend.

The incident happened early Friday afternoon in front of a business near the intersection of 9th Avenue and 37th Street in Hell’s Kitchen.

Yosef Rachimi, 19, and a fellow student were in front of a business, when police said a man who appeared to be intoxicated threw the Molotov cocktail at the two young men. The man also shouted, “I’ll come back with a knife and kill you.”

The bottle, which may have contained alcohol, did burst about 3 feet away from the two students. The contents combusted and started a small fire, the stain of which could still be seen on the sidewalk Monday. Rachimi and his friend were not hurt.

The fire was quickly put out by the business owner, while the man who threw it took off. The authorities were called in and are now looking at this as a possible hate crime.

Rachimi is in New York for a year-long study. He blames the incident on reignited tension overseas between Israel and Palestine. He said he remains undeterred by the violence.

Police said it’s not clear yet whether the students or business were the intended target of the attack.

This incident happened just days before Mayor Bill de Blasio visits Israel, where a speech about stopping anti-Semitism is on his agenda.

Borough Park Approaches Normalcy After Explosion That Killed 2, Injured More Than a Dozen

BOROUGH PARK – It’s been two weeks since an explosion rocked Borough Park, and things are just beginning to return to normal in the area.

Traffic has opened up along 13th Avenue, but construction is still underway to repair the damage.

The explosion on Oct. 3 killed two people and injured more than a dozen. Investigators initially suspected it resulted from a gas leak, but no official cause has been determined.

The building where the explosion occurred has been completely demolished, and News 12 has learned that adjacent buildings may come down as well.

Women Make World’s Largest Challah

BROOKLYN – Thousands of women rolled and baked their way into the Guinness World Records by creating the world’s largest challah.

The 2,000 women used 40 pounds of flour, 5 gallons of water and other ingredients to make the massive loaf measuring 20 feet by 16 inches. It took more than an hour to bake.

A representative from Guinness World Records Ltd. was on hand and officially declared the final product the world’s largest braided bread.

The communal challah is part of the Shabbos project, which aims to connect people and celebrate Jewish culture.

The bread will be part of a parade and then cut open and eaten this Friday.

Many tears have fallen, many years we’re calling,
Please no more
Many broken-hearted, friends lost and departed,
Please no more
Now the time has come, everyone must stand together,
and be strong forever more.
Young and helpless children, illness and confusion,
Please no more
Old and lonely people, hunger, war and evil,
Please no more
Now the time has come, everyone as one forever
Let His kingdom rise again.

Enemies of freedom, hatred without reason,
Please no more
Weapons of destruction, terror and corruption.
Please no more
Now the time has come, return and stay this time forever
Let His glory shine again

A Hundred Tons of Hummus – Secrets of Jerusalem Garden Revealed

Ali Ramlawi, owner of Jerusalem Garden middle eastern restaurant in Ann Arbor, provides a peak into both the art and the operation of making hummus on a large scale. Ali has single-handedly made all of JG’s hummus since at least 2002, which estimates place at nearly 1,000 tons of hummus. This was recorded on December 19, 2014 in JG’s off-site commercial kitchen in Ann Arbor. Since moving into its new, larger location in April, 2015 (314 E. Liberty), Jerusalem Garden’s hummus making operation now takes place in downtown Ann Arbor.

Jerusalem Garden is a family owned, local eatery featuring value, fresh ingredients and traditional family recipes since 1987. New location: 314 E. Liberty, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Phone: 734-995-5060. http://www.jerusalemgarden.net/jg/

Hummus from ‘Jerusalem’ | Fresh P

A basic hummus recipe that is genius in it’s construction. Instead of cooking garbanzo beans for 1.5 – 2 hours Ottolenghi & Tamimi sauté their soaked chickpeas in a little soda to help dissolve the skins so they cook in 20 – 40 minutes. Partially dissolving the skins also makes the hummus creamier. The addition of ice cold bean liquid helps loosen the hummus making this the fluffiest, most ethereal version I’ve tried yet.
1 1/4 cup dried chickpeas* (3 1/2 cups after cooking)
1 teaspoon baking soda
6 1/2 cups water
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons (270 g) tahini**
4 – 4 1/2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
4 cloves garlic, crushed
6 – 7 tablespoons ice cold water
extra virgin olive oil to drizzle on top

Soak your chickpeas overnight. The next day, drain the chickpeas. Place a medium saucepan over high heat and add the drained chickpeas and baking soda. Cook for about three minutes, stirring constantly.

Next add the water and bring to a boil. Cook for 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the freshness and the size. Skim off any foam that floats to the surface. When done your chickpeas should be very tender, breaking up easily when squeezed between your fingers, but not mushy. Reserve a cup of their cooking liquid before you drain your peas. You should have roughly 3 1/2 cups.

Place the chickpeas in a food processor and process until you get a smooth stiff paste. With the machine sill running, add the tahini paste, lemon juice, garlic, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Slowly drizzle in the ice water and allow it to mix for about five minutes, until you get a very smooth and creamy paste.

Taste. Adjust for acid and salt.

Transfer the hummus to a bowl, cover the surface with plastic wrap, and let it rest for at least 30 minutes. This gives the garlic time to ‘bloom’. Refrigerate until needed. Make sure to take it out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before serving. When you’re ready to serve smooth it out in a swirl on a shall plate or shallow bowl, drizzle it with olive oil, a few chickpeas, paprika, za’atar, parsley or a few toasted pine nuts.

This hummus will keep in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Recipe from Yotam Ottolenghi & Sami Tamimi’s Jerusalem (Ten Speed Press, 2013)

*The smaller the chickpeas the better, my preferred variety are the tiny thin skinned pedrosillano variety grown in Washington state, available through PNW Specialty Foods and also available for bulk order through Whole Foods bulk food managers.

Herbstimpressionen vom juedischen Friedhof in Breslau

Jewish Cemetery in Wrocław 1856 (museum) Walking tour, The most beautiful I have ever seen

Established in 1856, this 4.6 hectare cemetery is perhaps the most well-preserved testament to the former strength of Breslau’s pre-war Jewish community, with over 1200 gravestones. Closed in 1942, the cemetery quickly fell into deep neglect: in 1945 it was turned into a fortress by the Nazis and saw fierce fighting as evidenced by the eerie bullet holes in many of the gravestones. Preservation began in the 1970s and in 1991 it was opened as the Museum of Jewish Cemetery Art in tribute to the craftsmanship of its sepulchral art. Indeed the beauty and diversity of styles and symbols on display is perhaps unmatched anywhere. Many noteworthy figures are buried here, including the renowned biologist Ferdinand Cohn, the historian Heinrich Graetz (author of the first complete history of the Jews), Clara Immerwahl (first female PhD student at the University of Breslau, and wife of Fritz Haber, who committed suicide in objection to her husband’s work developing chemical warfare), Ferdinand Lassalle (founder and leader of the first labour party in Germany, killed in a duel), and the parents of Edith Stein; using old records some of their tombstones are slowly being restored. However, despite these modest efforts the Ślężna Street Cemetery remains a completely mysterious and evocative sanctuary of decaying vine-covered monuments, the broken pieces of which are stacked against each other, giving shelter to stray cats and shade to wildflowers. Well worth a visit.

Netanyahus Father-in-Law Publishes Second Book About His Yeshiva Years

VIN News Jerusalem – Much of the Netanyahu clan came together recently to celebrate the publication of a book by Binyamin Netanyahus father-in-law, Shmuel Ben-Artzi.
After leaving the yeshiva world and Yiddishkeit as a young man, the 94-year-old author has returned to Torah and mitzvahs. Ben-Artzi, the father of Sara Netanyahu, was born in Poland in 5675 (1914) and made aliya in 5693 (1933) when Yeshivas Novardok sent him to help start its Eretz Yisroel branch in Bnei Brak. A year later he left the yeshiva and went to work in agriculture, believing the task of building the state of Israel to be a foremost priority. Later he joined the Irgun and the Hagana, eventually working as a teacher in secular schools. Two years after releasing a book about his recollections as a student at Yeshivas Novardok, Ben-Artzi has now published a second book called Bein Yotzro Leyitzro, currently available only in Hebrew, which traces his early years in Eretz Yisroel and delves into the inner turmoil of the yeshiva bochurs of his generation

Yoni: The Life of Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Netanyahu

Lt. Col. Jonathan Netanyahu was the commander of Israel’s famous General Staff Reconnaissance Unit. Jonathan, known to family and friends as Yoni, was killed in action during the famous raid to free the hostages, posthumously named “Operation Jonathan” in his memory.
The film features rare interviews with Yoni’s family, friends, army comrades and commanders, with never-seen-before film footage from the personal archives of the Netanyahu family. The movie is replete with Yoni’s own thoughts and reflections on his life and loves, and about Israel. What emerges from the film isa unique glimpse of an exceptional Jewish soldier – a poet, intellectual, idealist and fighter. “Yoni” is powerful, touching and inspirational.

Film o koncepcji kuratorskiej wystawy Muzeum POLIN.

Why tell the story in many voices from the past, when a present-day historian could narrate the whole exhibition? Why focus on the experience of “ordinary” people? The scholars who created the Core Exhibition talk about its curatorial concept.
