About The JWRP

“Inspire a woman, you inspire a family. Inspire enough families, you inspire a community. Inspire enough communities, you can change the world.”If you wanted to have the greatest influence on the direction of the Jewish people, whom should you target? The Jewish mother, that’s who.

In 2008, eight Jewish women from different walks of life, affiliations, observance, and ages began a powerful dialogue. They agreed that it was time to empower and inspire women with the rich beauty of their Jewish heritage, and the JWRP was born.

The JWRP seeks to inspire women to transform themselves, transform their families, their communities, and the world. Our flagship program is Momentum, an eight-day journey through Israel. Momentum is more than a tour of Israel; it is an opportunity to deeply explore ourselves. Thousands of women from 19 different countries have already experienced this life-changing trip, paying only their own airfare, and returning home with the best gift of all—a deep, eternal connection to Israel, a profound kinship with each other, and a heart filled with Jewish values.

We work in partnership with a wide spectrum of community organizations, from Jewish outreach centers to Federations. Our partners recruit the women, staff the buses and continue the journey through continually evolving follow-up programming that keeps the inspiration going and helps to create bonds that extend not only to communities, but globally.

One of the most exciting results of our trips was the impact on families. We started hearing from our participants: “My husband has to see this and hear this!” We also heard from our partnering organizations, and finally, from the husbands themselves: “We are behind our wives, we don’t understand, please do a trip for us!” So we responded with Momentum opportunities for men, which have quickly become one of our greatest follow-up programs, helping to lift the family together.

– Jüdisch in Deutschland Doku/Reportage/deutsch

Jüdisch in Deutschland”.

Andor Iszak will mit seiner Musik Brücken bauen.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe: Hakhel in our times.

When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, every seventh year was known as a Year of Hakhel – a year of gathering. The entire Jewish nation would gather in Jerusalem, and the king would read passages of the Torah as all of the people – man, woman and child – would stand together in awe and reverence for the Word of G-d.

The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, proclaimed that the spirit of the Year of Gathering can be relived today.

“Connected” brings you to eleven Jewish gatherings around the world following an exciting – and surprising – path of interconnectedness that traverses the globe.

“A Happy End” a New Play by Iddo Netanyahu and Directed by Ami Dayan

Berlin 1932, days after the elections which will soon bring Hitler to power. Mark Erdmann is an acclaimed Jewish physicist, the head of the atomic lab at the University of Berlin. His wife Leah, an avid consumer of the city’s rich cultural life, is involved in an extramarital affair. The signs of impending danger are increasing, but the power of self-delusion cannot be easily overcome as the Jewish couple ponders whether to seek an unknown future outside Germany or to stay put and succumb to a fate known to us in hindsight.

“A Happy End” was first produced in Riva del Garda, Italy, for the Holocaust Memorial Day of 2008. The play was subsequently presented in Dresden, Germany, by the Shakespeare Company of Bremen, and the Beit Lessin Theatre, Tel Aviv. The play will be performed at the upcoming Uzebekistan National Cultural Festival. Mr. Netanyahu has been collaborating with director Ami Dayan, preparing the play for its US debut.

The Jews in Poland-Lithuania and Russia: 1350 to the Present Day

YIVO Institute for Jewish Research

Book Talk

Antony Polonsky, Brandeis University

For centuries, Poland and Russia formed the heartland of the Jewish world. Until World War II, this area was home to over forty percent of world Jewry: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland, and nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of American and European Jews originate from Eastern Europe, the history of this life and civilization is not well known, or has been reduced to a story of persecution and martyrdom. In his masterful three-volume history, ‘The Jews in Poland and Russia: 1350 to the Present Day’, Polonsky avoids sentimentalism and mythologizing, and provides a comprehensive and detailed account of this great civilization. From the towns and shtetls where Jews lived, to the emergence of Hasidism and the Haskalah movement, to the rise of Jewish urbanization, and Polish-Jewish relations during World War II, Polonsky’s book dispels myths about this culture, while demonstrating the importance of Poland and Russia as a great center of Jewish life.

Winner of the 2011 Kulczycki Book Prize for Polish Studies, and the Pro Historia Polonorum Prize for the best book on the history of Poland published in a foreign language between 2007 and 2011.

A Bank Robber and Darling of France’s Left Elite Is Murdered

Haaretz http://www.haaretz.com/news/features/this-day-in-jewish-history/.premium-1.676743

This Day in Jewish History, 1979 A Bank Robber and Darling of France’s Left Elite Is … That’s when he met Janine Sochaczewska, also a Jewish refugee from Poland. … This only complicated efforts to discern who was behind his murder, by three youths outside his Paris apartment, on this day in 1979.

Pierre Goldman

From Wikipedia
Pierre Goldman, (Lyon, June 22, 1944 – September 20, 1979 in Paris) was a French left-wing intellectual who was convicted of several robberies and mysteriously assassinated. It has been suspected that the Grupos Antiterroristas de Liberación (GAL) death squad was involved in his murder. His half-brother Jean-Jacques Goldman is a popular French singer.
Pierre Goldman was born near the end of World War II, the illegitimate son of Alter Mojze Goldman and Janine Sochaczewska, who were active in the FTP-MOI Resistancemovement.[1][2] After the liberation of France, his parents separated, and his father, in concert with a group of former FTP-MOI members, kidnapped him. Thereafter, he had only sporadic contacts with his mother, who returned to Poland.[2] Read More Button--orange  Foto Tomb of Pierre Goldman Coyau / Wikimedia Commons / CC-BY-SA-3.0

Pierre Goldman : l’assassinat – Faites entrer l’accusé #FELA

Faites entrer l’accusé
Pierre Goldman : l’assassinat

Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz Composes Addendum to “Shak’a Chama”

In the year 1907 the poem, Shok’a Chamo, was written by the Rosh Hayeshiva of Bais Medrash L’rabanan in Berlin, Avrohom Eliyahu Kaplan OBM. He wrote it at the age of seventeen while learning in Slabodka. As a student of the famous Slabodka Yeshiva he internalized the teachings of Musar, as is evident from this poem, which contains a sense of depression and searching. It begins: “The sun has set… my soul has set / In the depth of its sorrow as great as the sea…”.

More than a century later, Los Angeles businessman and philanthropist Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz composed an amazing addendum to the poem. An original high part with its own lyrics. While the tune of the addendum is clearly inspired by the original melody, the new lyrics written to the poetry, take on a more encouraging and uplifting theme.

Jewish Quarter,Palma de Mallorca

Jewish quarter
From the end of the thirteenth century until the fifteenth century, the Jewish quarter or “Call Major” occupied a large area in the southeast of the old city between El Temple, Sant Francesc and the Calatrava. However, during the Muslim era and for most of the thirteenth century, the Call was next to the Almudaina in the current Palau Reial Street. Its inhabitants formed a separate group from the rest of the city, as the quarter was an enclosed area surrounded by a wall. There were two synagogues, one in the early fourteenth century, which was on the site now occupied by the Montesión Church, and the other one used to be in the current Seminari Vell (Old Seminary) building next to the Hebraic schools. In 1435 the Jews of Majorca were forced to convert to Christianity and Judaism formally ended in Majorca. The descendants of some of these converted jews, known as ‘Xuetes’ marked by their surnames, which they adopted from their godparents at the time of baptism, usually nobles and Christian merchants, have been marginalized in Majorcan society until the 1960s. This is one of the darkest aspects of Majorcan history. Its network of narrow streets and alleys make up one of the most representative popular neighborhoods of Palma de Mallorca.

The Chuetas of Palma de Mallorca

An awakening is taking place among the crypto-Jews of Palma de Mallorca. Known as Chuetas, many are returning to their Jewish roots.

Where every sense is heightened, every emotion is magnified, our everyday reality is shattered and we are flying into the heavens. It may only last a moment, an hour, an afternoon. 23 Elul – Death of Aleksander Rebbe, Yitzchak Menachem Danziger, in Treblinka (1942)

Aleksander (Hasidic dynasty)

From Wikipedia
The Aleksander (Alt. Alexander, Hebrew script: אלכסנדר ) hasidic movement flourished in Poland from 1880 until it was largely destroyed by Nazi Germany during World War II. The sect is named after the town of its origin, Aleksandrow Lodzki, Poland, (about forty five kilometers from Łódź), which was called Aleksander in Yiddish.
Prior to the Holocaust, Aleksander Hasidism were the second largest hasidic group in Poland – second in size only to Ger. They attracted artisans, merchants and water carriers rather than elite Talmudic scholars and richer people that were attracted to Ger. Like the rest of Polish Jewry, almost all of Aleksander hasidim were killed in the Holocaust.,,,,,,
The founder of the dynasty of Aleksander was Rabbi Yechiel Dancyger (1828–1894), son of Rabbi Fayvl from Gritse, a disciple of Israel Yitzhak Kalish of Vurke.[1]
His son, Yerachmiel Yisroel Yitzchok Dancyger (1853–1910), was even more famous, and accumulated a large group of followers. He was the author of Yismach Yisrael (Hebrew: “Israel will Rejoice”, 1911), which he wrote together with his brother, Shmuel Tsvi (1840–1923), who later succeeded him and authored the Tiferes Shmuel.

Israel Meir (HaKohen) Kagan (1839–1933), known popularly as the Chofetz Chaim, was an influential rabbi of the Musar movement,[1] a Halakhist, posek, and ethicist whose works continue to be widely influential in Jewish life.
Kagan was born in Dzyatlava, Grodno Governorate, Russian Empire (today Belarus), on January 26, 1839, and died inRadun’/Raduń, Wilno Voivodship in Poland (now Belarus) on September 15, 1933. His surname, Poupko, is not widely known.[2] His home town, Dzyatlava, was once named Zdzięcioł when it was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until the time of thepartitions of Poland. When Kagan was ten years old, his father died. His mother moved the family to Vilnius in order to continue her son’s education. While in Vilnius, Kagan became a student of Rabbi Jacob Barit.[citation needed] Kagan’s mother later remarried (Epstein) and moved to Raduń. At 17, he married the daughter of his stepfather, and settled in Raduń.

Jack L. Warner

From Wikipedia
Jack Leonard “J. L.” Warner (August 2, 1892 – September 9, 1978), born Jacob Warner in London, Ontario, was a Canadian-bornAmerican film executive who was the president and driving force behind the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Warner’s career spanned some forty-five years, its duration surpassing that of any other of the seminal Hollywood studio moguls.[1]
As co-head of production at Warner Bros. Studios, he worked with his brother, Sam Warner, to procure the technology for the film industry’s first talking picture.[2] After Sam’s death, Jack clashed with his surviving older brothers, Harry and Albert Warner. He assumed exclusive control of the film production company in the 1950s, when he secretly purchased his brothers’ shares in the business after convincing them to participate in a joint sale of stocks.[3]
Jack Warner was born in London, Ontario, in 1892. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland who spoke mainly Yiddish. Jack was the fifth surviving son of Benjamin Warner[10] a cobbler from Krasnosielc, Poland (then located in the Congress Poland), and his wife, the former Pearl Leah Eichelbaum.[11] Following their marriage in 1876, the couple had three children in Poland, one of whom died at a young age

Sid Caesar

From Wikipedia

File:Sid Caesar - 1961.JPG

saac SidneySidCaesar (September 8, 1922 – February 12, 2014) was an American comic actor and writer, best known for the pioneering 1950s live television series Your Show of Shows, a 90-minute weekly show watched by 60 million people, and its successor Caesar’s Hour, both of which influenced later generations of comedians.[3] He also acted in movies; he played Coach Calhoun in Grease (1978) and its sequel Grease 2 (1982), and appeared in the films It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), Silent Movie (1976), History of the World, Part I (1981), and Cannonball Run II (1984).,,,,,,,

Caesar was the youngest of three sons born to Jewish immigrants living in Yonkers, New York. His father was Max Ziser and his mother was Ida (née Raphael). They likely were from Dąbrowa Tarnowska, Poland.[5] Reports state that the surname “Caesar” was given to Max, as a child, by an immigration official at Ellis Island.[6][7][8] This is an urban myth. Sid Caesar – “This is Your Story” with Carl Reiner and Howard Morris (Full Sketch)

[From “Kovacs Corner” on YouTube.com] – Before video tape, when a live prime time television series went on mid year hiatus, the networks would broadcast “summer replacements”. During the year 1957, “The Ernie Kovacs Show” was the summer replacement program for “Caesar’s Hour”. Earlier known as “Your Show of Shows”, it starred the legendary TV comedian Sid Caesar, with co-stars Carl Reiner and the late Howard Morris. With a writing staff that included among others Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Danny Simon and Mel Tolkin, it was one of the premier comedy shows of it’s time. This particular sketch satirizes one of the most popular programs of it’s day “This is Your Life” which starred Ralph Edwards and it is, in my opinion, one of the funniest comedy sketches ever performed on television. Howard Morris’ over-the-top performance as “Uncle Goopy” put an audience in stitches 50 years ago and he can do it again with equal ease today! After Kovacs’ untimely death, Sid was called upon by director Stanley Kramer to replace Ernie in the role of “Melville Crump” in the1963 film “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World”

Argument to Beethoven’s 5th

No cue cards, no teleprompters, and no second takes–legendary funnyman Sid Caesar pioneered live television sketch comedy with his 1950s sitcoms Your Show of Shows and Caesar’s Hour. This classic sketch is “Argument to Beethoven’s 5th,” Sid Caesar and Nanette Fabray play a married couple in a argument with pantomimed action and the dialogue is classic music.Enjoy!

PM Netanyahu’s Remarks at Weekly Cabinet Meeting – 06/09/2015

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting.

Orthodox Jewish Pilot Jack Rosenberg Involved in NJ Plane Crash

The pilot who crash-landed a small Coast Guard plane in New Jersey is a tireless Rockland volunteer and deeply religious man who fought to join the Coast Guard Auxiliary after the organization initially prohibited him from wearing his skullcap in uniform.

Yakov Rosenberg of Spring Valley suffered serious injuries in the crash Thursday in Cresskill but is expected to recover. He underwent surgery on both of his broken legs Thursday evening at Hackensack University Medical Center, friends said Friday.

Rosenberg, who also goes by Jack, is a lifelong Rockland resident and member of the Viznitz Hasidic sect who is known for going out of his way to help others.

“All his good deeds came back to him,” said Rabbi Mayer Berger, operations director for Chesed Shel Emes, a Brooklyn-based group that dispatches planes and helicopters to help Jewish families retrieve sick or injured relatives and comply with religious burial laws. “It’s a miracle.”

Rosenberg was surveying the Hudson River for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, a volunteer organization that helps the Coast Guard’s efforts to promote recreational boating safety He was initially thwarted from serving when he applied in 2006 even though he passed all the tests because regulations banned him from wearing a yarmulke, a traditional skullcap worn by Jewish men.

Lawmakers, including Assemblyman Dov Hikind,D-Brooklyn, intervened and convinced the Coast Guard to change its policy, allowing Rosenberg to join.

Rosenberg, who has a tire business, is a certified pilot and volunteers for Chesed Shel Emes, which was founded by his brother, Mendy. He won wide praise in 2011 when he flew a helicopter to take food and medicine to a group of observant Jews stranded in Killington, Vermont, after roads were washed away by Hurricane Irene.

He has also been a member of Chaverim, a service organization in Monsey, since it was started in 1999. His wife works as a dispatcher for the same group. The couple has several children.

“He gets up in the middle of the night to help someone change a tire or give a boost to a dead battery,” said Chaverim coordinator Josef Margaretten. “If someone is lost or a child is locked in a car, he’s the first to volunteer.”

Rosenberg was piloting the single-engine, four-seat plane when he radioed that he was experiencing engine trouble shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

He was trying to make an emergency landing at Teterboro airport when he crash-landed at 4:44 p.m. in a recreational field, away from homes in the suburban Bergen County neighborhood. The sole passenger, a man from Setauket, New York, was also seriously injured and is expected to recover.

The Cessna 172 crash-landed in a field behind the Cresskill Swim Club, NBC 4 New York reported.

The cause of the crash has not been determined. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation and will interview Rosenberg and the passenger as soon as they are well enough, said spokesman Peter Knudson. Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration have already visited the crash site.

Rosenberg’s wife and children are at Hackensack Medical Center, accompanied by members of the Coast Guard, Chaverim and Chesed Shel Emes, who are providing support. They are marveling that Rosenberg and his passenger survived and no one on the ground was injured.

“He would put himself in danger so he wouldn’t hurt anyone else,” Margaretten said. “We’re so proud of him.”

IDF Rescuse 5 American Boys From Arab Lynch Mob in Hevron

Five American Yeshiva Boys mistakenly entered the Arab-controlled section of Hevron Thursday September 3 2015. where they were attacked by a mob that threw firebombs and rocks at them, the IDF and police spokesman said.

A local Arab took them into his home, where they awaited rescue by the IDF.

Forces from the Hevron District police and Judea and Samaria police, assisted by an IDF force, entered the neighborhood and rescued them.

Two of the men are in moderate to light condition. They have been taken to receive medical attention.

Photos from the scene show a pair of tefillin lying on the road, belonging to one of the victims who escaped during the attack.

According to reports from emergency service ZAKA in Hevron / Kiryat Arba, a firebomb was hurled at their vehicle, which went up in flames.

A report from the Hatzala emergency service of Judea and Samaria said that one of them is bleeding from the face.

The latest reports said that the IDF has reached the men and that they are being taken to Israeli-controlled territory. They have been alternately described as haredi and as yeshiva students.

Large IDF forces are combing the area where the attack took place and investigating the event.

Ari Reich Hihiyu Leratzon

Moshe Cohen Presents:
Child Prodigy Ari Reich in his debut single “Hihiyu Leratzon”

After sweeping away the Jewish music world on dozens of stages and capturing the hearts of tens of thousands in Israel and across the world, wonder child Ari Reich breaks out with his debut single.
Ari gained musical fame singing alongside the biggest names in the industry, in high society events and dinners for prominent institutions. Until now, we enjoyed his melodious voice only at events and in video clips passed from friend to friend at lightning speed. Now, Moshe Cohen presents a soulful new single he produced especially for Reich.
In keeping with his tradition of excellence, Moshe spared no expense in creating a breathtaking production at the highest standards of the genre. Motti Elovitz from America composed this touching new song, which was orchestrated by Yehoshua Fried, using the leading musicians of Eretz Yisrael. The rich and soulful
sound of the choir testifies to his careful selection of the very best voices ever to join the Malchus Choir.
R’ Moshe Cohen, who also serves as Reich’s musical instructor and mentor, gave careful attention to every detail necessary to create the best possible production.
“The words of this song are taken from Shemoneh Esrei,” R’ Moshe Cohen explains. “Everyone who hears it can find a place to connect to it, from the innermost depths of his soul. The single is accompanied by a special video clip that adds an extra dimension to the musical experience.”

European Maccabi Games in Berlin.

– Prof. Gesine Schwan (Präsidentin Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance, Berlin)
– Prof. em. Arnulf Baring (Politikwissenschaftler, FU Berlin)
– Michel Friedman (ehem. Vizepräsident Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland)

Richard the Lionheart Defeats Saladin at Arsuf
Haaretz http://www.haaretz.com/news/features/this-day-in-jewish-history/.premium-1.674796

This Day in Jewish History, 1191 Richard the Lionheart Defeats Saladin at Arsuf. The seaside skirmish was just one of the battles Saladin and the …

Battle of Arsuf

From Wikipedia,
The Battle of Arsuf was a battle of the Third Crusade in which Richard I of England (Richard the Lionheart) defeated Saladin(Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb), founder of the Ayyubid dynasty and Sultan of Egypt and Syria, at Arsuf in Palestine. The forces of the Third Crusade had taken the city of Acre after a prolonged siege. The next strategic target for the Christian army was to secure the city of Jaffa, which would facilitate their ultimate goal, the recapture of the city of Jerusalem.

M2TW Kingdoms: 3rd Crusade, King Richard the Lionheart & Saladin at the battle of Jaffa 1192

My little 3rd Crusade project is complete.
At last, the Saracen leader Sultan Saladin of the Egyptian faction came out from his fortifications with an army. For how long i’v been playing M2TW Kingdoms, i never was able to fight him outside Cairo or any other of his forts & cities, but this time, when i wanted him most, to make the battle of Jaffa, he seemed to grant me my wish & came right where i wanted him, between Arsuf & Ascalon lol. Something like that happens once in a million. As many of u guys know, the town of Jaffa in M2TW doesn’t exsist, so i built a small fortification right between Arsuf & Ascalon where Jaffa is roughy located, & manned it by just a few Crusader Knights. Although Saladin didn’t even bother to besiege it, he stood right next to it with his army. It was then when i took King Richard, a few knights & Crossbowmen, put them on the ships & went to attack him by sea, similar to how it was done for real. BTW for this battle, if u notice, i edited Richard’s chainmail to gold, as if he’s wearing gold-plated mail like many Princes & Kings of the Medieval used to wear. As soon as the battle starts, i charged my Knights streight to Saladin’s larger army, killing many of his men just by the blow of the charge, then pulled back my knights & advanced my infantry while i swung my Knights around & charged them also from the rear. By this time the Crusader Knights from Jaffa arrived & did well in helping me finish of the rest of Saladin’s army & put them to flight. Again, Saladin stayed fighting & got killed which it wasn’t entirely what i wanted for the battle of Jaffa, but he stayed & got what he got, in fact, after he died the remains of his army started fleeing.
The Battle of Jaffa 1192, started as a siege first, untill Richard arrived by sea to relieve his fellow Christians, & tho badley outnumbered, he bravely battled Saladin’s men untill they retreated. It was the last battle of the 3rd Crusade in which all 4 major battles of it were Crusader Victories. When King Richard saw that his few remaining men couldn’t possibly take or hold Jerusalem, & also, recieved the terrible news that his own brother John is supported by King Philip II of France, to usurp his throne, he started retreating to Acre to go home & settle this urgent affair, but vowed to Saladin that he would return with an army soon after. Saladin thought, with Richard away, he could just do as he pleases & took 7,000 men & moved to capture the fortress town of Jaffa, manned by just 80 knights & some 400 infantry. Soon after, the Saracens captured the town & started attacking the citadel which was manned by the defenders. Although Saladin gave expressed orders to his men not to attack the citadel, they started to ignore him & attacked it anyway. During this time, Saladin’s authority among the emirs, was becoming in question after being defeated twice by Richard already. As Richard heard the news, he took some Knights & 2,000 Crossbowmen from Genoa & embarked on his ships but not to go back home but to sail south to relieve their Christian brethren at Jaffa. When Richard landed on the less defended side of Jaffa, he took the Saracens completely by surprise. He & his men fought their way into Jaffa, recaptured it & was welcomed with great joy by his fellow Christian defenders. Suddenly, they all moved out of the town & charged the Saracens, fighting valiantly untill panic lost the Saracen’s nerve & all started retreating against Saladin’s orders. It is said that Saladin always respected Richard for his bravery, but that day not only he respected him but also admired him while watching him fighting in the thick of battle, he also sent him a horse replacement immediatly after Richard’s horse fell by arrows. If his prime enemy ended up in admiring him in awe for his bravery, imagine what his fellow Christians felt for Richard, no wonder his army prevailed in battles. Military sence told him that with so few men, roughly less than 7,000, he couldn’t possibly besiege & take Jerusalem manned by Saladin’s 20,000men, camped outside the city walls. It is normal for a besieging army to have the larger force in a siege, not the much smaller, especially in besieging a large city as Jerusalem & although he vowed to return to recapture the Holy city, he unexpectedly died in France, shot by a Crossbow & never made it home. After the battle of Jaffa King Richard & Sultan Saladin made a peace treaty known as the Treaty of Ramla, that Christians could enter Jerusalem to visit the Holy places, the Crusaders keep their captured lands of Acre, Arsuf, Jaffa & Ascalon & Saladin keeps Jerusalem & so, the 3rd Crusade ended in peace agreed by both Christians & Muslims. However, it didn’t last long.

Hail King Richard the Lionheart!!!

Jewish Man Donates Part of Liver to Save Woman’s Life

MADISON, Wis. -A Madison man is recovering after a historical surgery in the state of New York that saved a woman’s life.

Yitzchok Pinkesz was one of the first in New York to donate part of his liver to a complete stranger, known as an altruistic donation. The procedure comes with a .2 percent chance of death. When asked why he would undergo such a surgery for someone he’s never met, Pinkesz said it just makes sense.

“We’re talking about a person that has 4 children, she’s loved by her husband, loved by her children,” he says. “If your liver is dying, there’s no way out of it. You’re going to die. If you could avoid that for very little risk, there would be no reason not to.”

Yitzchok underwent the surgery in July. Just one month later, he’s recovered well enough to return to work and play with his kids.

Looking back, he says he would do it again in a heartbeat.

“If you saw somebody drowning, and you need to jump in – and you’re not the best swimmer, but you think you could get out there and save him – you would do it,” he says.

Torah Study: Only for scholars? The Rebbe’s response.

Torah describes the symbiotic relationship between the sea-faring tribe of Zevulun and the scholarly tribe of Issachar. Zevulun supported the Torah study of Issachar, and shared in the merit of that study.

At the same time, Torah instructs all Jews, even the most philanthropic, not to suffice with supporting Torah scholars, but to engage in study themselves.

In this talk, the Rebbe demonstrates how even the busiest of people can toil in the study of Torah, “day and night.”

Ohr Olam – Mishnah Berurah – Promotional Video

Whether it is baalei teshuva, yeshiva graduates or simply those seeking to cover as much ground in as little time as possible, there is a tremendous thirst for advanced Torah texts in the English language. To meet this ever-increasing demand, Rabbi Asher Zelig Eisenberg, of blessed memory, founded the Ohr Olam Institute. His primary goal was to bring about Zikui HaRabbim by encouraging the learning of contemporary Jewish Law and other texts and making them available to Jews of all streams of life. Sadly, Rabbi Eisenberg passed away in the midst of establishing his enterprise, and we see it as our obligation and responsibility to turn his dream into reality. We have therefore assembled a team of accomplished Torah scholars, skilled editors and talented graphic artists to produce volumes that are as pleasing to the eye and easy to read as they are accurate in conveying the eternal truth of the Torah. Each volume in the Ohr Olam library is presented in a clear, easy-to-understand style, yet preserves the depth and unique character of the original Hebrew.

The Ohr Olam Institute is an innovative new Torah project committed to disseminating the eternal wisdom of the Torah classics to the English speaking public to ensure that no Jew is estranged from Torah. Our goal is to bring the timeless words of our heritage into the Twenty-First Century in a language that everyone can understand without losing the depth or passion of the original Hebrew.

find out more about the Ohr Olam edition of the Mishnah Berurah, a revolutionary project that explicates the Mishnah Berurah and Beiur Halachah with unprecedented clarity and precision, featuring readable translation and clear elucidation of the Shulchan Aruch and Mishnah Berurah in order to open the intricate world of practical Halachah before all sectors of the Jewish people. Our hope is to instill the daily study of Halachah in its deepest sense amongst students young and old throughout the world, regardless of their background.

The Jewish cemetery in Soroca

The Jewish cemetery in Soroca, a town in northern Moldova that once was home to some 18,000 Jews. Now about 100 remain and only 20 are halachically Jewish

The Great Synagogue, Soroca Modova

At the beginning of the 1800s, David Shelomoh Eibenschütz served as a rabbi in Soroki. The writers and educators Noah Rosenblum and Kadish-Isaak Abramovich-Ginzburg developed secular Jewish education programs at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1900—a highpoint of Jewish life in Soroki—the town had 17 synagogues. Emigration (mainly to the United States and Argentina) had begun, however, after the passing of the restrictive May Laws of 1882 and the resulting economic difficulties. In 1930 the town had 5,462 Jews (36% of the population).

Entrance to the Tailors’ Synagogue, Soroca (now in Moldova), ca. 1920. (YIVO)
When German and Romanian forces entered Soroki in July 1941, they systematically began to annihilate its Jews. A concentration camp was established in adjoining Vertujeni, where 26,000 Jews were imprisoned. From September to the end of December 1941, those who survived were deported on foot to camps in Transnistria. Many were shot or died of hunger and exhaustion on the roads. Few survived the war.

It is estimated that after the war perhaps 1,000 Jews were in Soroki. The town’s only synagogue functioned until 1961, when Soviet authorities closed it; a matzo bakery survived until 1966. Jewish culture began to revive in 1989, and in February 1991 the Soroca Society for Jewish Culture started to publish a page in the local newspaper Realitatea. Approximately 200 Jews were living there in 2004, and branches of the Association of Jewish Communities of the Republic of Moldova and the American Joint Distribution Committee operated in the town.

In his novel Ha-Keramim (The Vineyards; 1930) Shelomoh Hillels wrote a colorful description of Jewish life in Soroca, and the Yiddish poet Zelik Berdichever evoked the world of ordinary Jews there in his poems. In the 1990s, Arkady Gendler (1921– ), a native of Soroca, wrote the song “Mayn shtetele Soroke” (My Shtetl Soroca).

Reb Meir Mordechai Berkowitz – Refuah V’chesed

Over 1000 people enjoyed an evening of inspiration and entertainment in support of Refuah V’Chesed, an organization that provides guidance, emotional and physical support for patients and their families in time of need.

About Refuah V’Chesed

Lately re-branded as the “Montreal Centre for Health and Care,” the volunteer based organization provides many medical, hospitality and transport services to patients and their families Refuah V’Chesed has received over 40,000 calls over the last year. The organization is directed by a board of prestigious people and a medical advisory board. The medical guidance and support is led by Aaron Schmelczer and Aron Friedlander, who have decades of experience in the medical field, and the Director of Development is Avraham Apter.

Most of the dinner’s attendees hailed from Montreal’s Chassidic communities but there was also a healthy contingency of doctors and medical experts from across Montreal and the surrounding area. Free copies of a special printing of Mishnayos Avos (“ethics of our fathers”) was handed out as community members took their seats for a three course meal and entertainment provided by the Zimra choir.

The last speech of the night was delivered by Meir Mordechai Berkowitz, a dynamic speaker from Williamsburg. He shared the tale of a wealthy man whose daughter got engaged to the son of another wealthy man. But then the other man lost all his money and the wealthy man decided to call off the engagement. But the other man kept asking him to set a date for the wedding and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Exasperated, the wealthy man went to his Rebbe to ask him to knock some sense into the other man. When the Rebbe heard the story, he told the wealthy man, “thank G-d you are coming to me and not the other man.” He revealed that it had been destined in heaven that one of the two wealthy men would lose their fortune. He taught the wealthy man to be grateful for what he had, and to continue with the wedding as planned. “We all need to thank G-d that we are here enjoying this Refuah V’Chesed dinner and not needing the services of this wonderful organization,” said Berkowitz.

Berkowitz also shared an impactful moment he had experienced three years ago when he had been in a New York hospital caring for his father. At one point a Chesed organization delivered a meal to his father and Berkowitz watched as his father came to life from a note that accompanied the home baked food. Berkowitz reached into his pocket and pulled out the note, which he has carried with him since. The note simply stated that the food had been prepared warm. “I know the food may not be warm anymore by the time it reaches you but it was made with a warm heart that wishes you a complete recovery.”

Berkowitz concluded with the message that Refuah V’Chesed is devoted to caring for others and making sure that patients and families in the hospitals are not alone but supported by the staff and volunteers at Refuah V’Chesed.

Jüdischer Friedhof in Prag

Alter Jüdischer Friedhof in Prag

Jewish congress held in Hungary amid concerns over rise in anti-Semitism

http://www.euronews.com/ The World Jewish Congress (WJC) will begin its four-yearly Plenary Assembly in Budapest today.

The meeting – in which Jewish people gather from around the world to discuss issues important to them – is usually held in Jerusalem, but the group has moved it to Hungary to highlight concerns over the rise of far right movements and anti-Semitism in Europe.

A case in point is the right wing Jobbik party which won 17 per cent of the vote in the last election and rallied outside the venue.

The Party leader Gabor Vona addressed the large crowd which had gathered saying: “We are special here in Europe, but not because we are the most anti-Semitic nation, but because even if all of Europe is at their feet, even if all of Europe licks their feet, we won’t do it even then.”

Peter Feldmajer the Chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities said:

“The strengthening of Jobbik is only a symptom in these matters, the bigger problem is that around half a million people support thefar-right and many people accept the
negative attitude to Jews.”

Hungary’s Conservative Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, who is due to address the WJC assembly’s opening session this evening, had tried to have the Jobbik rally banned, but he was overruled by a Budapest court.

Budapest Jewish holocaust memorial

The Shoes on the Danube Promenade, created by Gyula Pauer and Can Togay, is a memorial on the bank of the Danube in Budapest. It is located on the Pest side of the Danube Promenade at the end of Szechenyi Street, about 300 m south of the Hungarian Parliament and near the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Shoes on the Danube is a memorial to the people who fell victim to the Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest and depicts their shoes left behind on the bank when they fell into the river after having been shot during World War II.
At first, during World War II, 250 coworkers of Wallenberg were working around the clock to prevent the Jewish population from being sent to concentration camps; this figure later rose to approximately 400. People, amongst whom Lars Ernster, Edith Ernster and Jacob Steiner can be counted, were housed at the Swedish Embassy in Budapest on Üllői Street 2-4 and 32 other buildings in Budapest that Wallenberg rented and then declared as extraterritorial to prevent the people housed in them from being sent to concentration camps.

On the night of January 8, 1945, all of the inhabitants of the building on Üllöi Street were rounded up and dragged away to the banks of the Danube by an Arrow Cross execution brigade from the city commandership. At midnight, Karoly Szabo and 20 policemen with drawn bayonets broke into the Arrow Cross house and rescued everyone there (see also historic frontpage 1947 newspaper). [2]. Among the people saved were Lars Ernster, who fled to Sweden and became a member of the board of the Nobel Foundation from 1977 to 1988, and Jacob Steiner, who fled to Israel and became a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Information from Jacob Steiner after he has read this page: On December 25, 1944, Jacob Steiner’s father was shot dead by Arrow Cross militiamen on, falling into the Danube as a result. His father had been an officer in World War I and spent 4 years as a prisoner of war in Russia.[1]

Translation of the song HASHANA HABA’AH
Next year we will sit on the porch and count migrating birds.
Children on vacation will play catch between the house and the fields.

You will yet see, you will yet see, how good it will be next year.

Red grapes will ripen till the evening, and will be served chilled to the table.
And languid winds will carry to the crossroads old newspapers and a cloud.

Born and educated in Russia, Rand moved to the United States in 1926. She had a play produced on Broadway in 1935–1936. Rand was born Alisa Zinov’yevna Rosenbaum (Russian: Али́са Зиновьевна Розенбаум) on February 2, 1905, to a Russian Jewishbourgeois[12] family living in Saint Petersburg. She was the eldest of the three daughters of Zinovy Zakharovich Rosenbaum and his wife, Anna Borisovna (née Kaplan), largely non-observant Jews. Zinovy Rosenbaum was a successful pharmacist and businessman, eventually owning a pharmacy and the building in which it was located.[13] With a passion for the liberal arts, Rand later said she found school unchallenging and she began writing screenplays at the age of eight and novels at the age of ten.[14] At the prestigious Stoiunina Gymnasium, her closest friend was Vladimir Nabokov’s younger sister, Olga. foto wikipedia Photo of writer Ayn Rand (1905-1982) from her Soviet passport ,,, read more…https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayn_Rand

Chaim Dovid Berson Singing The 2nd Dance Set An Aaron Teitelbaum Production

Chaim Dovid Berson Singing “2nd dance Set” On May 31 2015, At The Pearl River Hilton,Conducted by Yisroel Lamm, An Aaron Teitelbaum Production

Yossi Piamenta Rockin in Uman Ukraine 2009 4

Thousands of Hasidic Jews from around the world are gathering in the Ukrainian city of Uman for a yearly pilgrimage marked by singing, dancing and prayer.
The pilgrims crowding the city’s streets are mostly men in black hats or kippas coming to pray at the tomb of Rabbi Nahman — a revered leader of their traditionalist movement.
On the pilgrimage days for a week around the Jewish New Year, this sleepy, dusty town of 90,000 inhabitants some 200 kilometres (124 miles) south of Kiev is transformed into a multilingual hub of the Hasidic movement.
The celebrations are a way for Hasidic Jews to get back to the roots of their movement in the heart of eastern Europe more than 60 years after the Holocaust.
The stream of pilgrims makes its way down Pushkin street to a large metal structure covering the tomb of Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav and two synagogues filled with believers who pray here for hours on end.
Rabbi Nahman, also known as a tzadik or spiritual master, died in Uman in 1810, having urged his followers to gather by his tomb to celebrate Rosh Hashana, or Jewish New Year.
This year up to 25,000 Hasidic Jews, most of them from Israel and the United States, heed his call and attend the celebrations.
The Hasidic tradition, founded in the 18th century in Belarus and Ukraine, places special emphasis on joyous communion with God. The singing and dancing give Uman a festive air.
With Hasidic music pouring out of CD-players and laptop computers, pilgrims dance in circles and sing all around — in the streets.

The battle between the rooster and the security guard – Funny!

Chase could only happen in football in Israel as fans Bnei Yehuda released onto the pitch the famous rooster to bring them luck. Quite a few security guards tried their luck and catch the animal. What was the end? Watch the video and find out

Unfortunately it did not help when they suffered in the final minutes the equalizer legs Omer Damari.

So what do you say, is the rooster faster than the footballers?

German Jewish soldiers – Memorial video

In memory of German Jewish soldiers of the World War I.
Estimated 100 000 Jews fought in the German Army in the WW1. Many of them were awarded the Iron Cross, and more of them were flying aces. Betrayed by their comrades, and by the country and nation they fought for – most of them and their families died in the Holocaust. This short video makes memory for them.

Kurt Tucholsky – Die brennende Lampe

13 Elul – Death of Ben Ish Chai (1909)

Yosef Hayyim

From Wikipedia
Yosef Chaim (1 September 1835 – 30 August 1909) (Iraqi Hebrew: Yoseph Ḥayyim; Hebrew: יוסף חיים מבגדאד) was a leadinghakham (Sephardi Rabbi), authority on halakha (Jewish law), and Master Kabbalist. He is best known as author of the work on Halakha Ben Ish Ḥai (בן איש חי) (“Son of Man (who) Lives”), a collection of the laws of everyday life interspersed with mystical insights and customs, addressed to the masses and arranged by the weekly Torah portion.
Rav Yosef Chaim was born in Baghdad, Iraq, where his father, Hakham Eliyahu Chaim, was the active leader of the Jewish community. Yosef Chaim’s talents were evident from a young age (composing an anonymous responsum at age 14). When he was 7 years old he fell into a pit and was very close to dying. When he got out the community believed it was a miracle so he decided to dedicate his life to Torah ,,,,,,,
The Ben Ish Chai (בן איש חי) is a standard reference in some Sephardi homes (functioning as “a Sephardi Kitzur Shulchan Arukh”) and is widely studied in Sephardi yeshivot. Due to the popularity of this book, Hakham Yosef Chaim came to be known as “Ben Ish Chai”, by which he is referred to by many today. The book is a collection of homilies he gave over two years discussing the weekly Torah portion. Each chapter begins with a mystical discussion, usually explaining how a Kabbalistic interpretation of a certain verse relates to a particular halakha, and then continuing to expound on that halakha with definitive rulings. ,,,,

Leona Mindy Roberts Helmsley (July 4, 1920 – August 20, 2007) was an American businesswoman. She was known for her flamboyant personality and had a reputation for tyrannical behavior that earned her the sobriquet Queen of Mean.[2] She was promoted by the Beber Silverstein Group and its co-founder Joyce Beber who persuaded her to call herself Queen of the Palace Hotel
Leona Helmsley was born Lena Mindy Rosenthal in Marbletown, New York, to Polish Jewish immigrants, Ida (née Popkin), a homemaker, and Morris Rosenthal, a hatmaker.[4] Her family moved to Brooklyn while she was still a girl, and moved six more times before settling in Manhattan. She dropped out of Abraham Lincoln High School to seek her fortune.[2] In a short time, she changed her name several times—from Lee Roberts, Mindy Roberts and Leni Roberts. Eventually, she decided on Leona Mindy Roberts.[5] She legally changed her surname to Roberts.[6] She was a chain smoker, consuming several packs a day. Helmsley would later claim that she appeared in billboard ads for Chesterfield cigarettes, but her claim remains unsubstantiated.

How the Philippines saved 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust : 24/7 News Online

How the Philippines saved 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust

Even at the age of seven, Lotte Hershfield knew her world was crumbling.

She avoided the benches with the sign: No dogs or Jews allowed. She couldn’t attend public schools. And the Nazis and their growling German shepherds raided her family’s house, throwing their books into a fire.

As a child, “we were very aware,” said Hershfield, now 84. Jews weren’t welcome in their own home.

Growing increasingly fearful, her parents and her older brother left their hometown of Breslau, Germany, in 1938 and journeyed to an unlikely new home — the Philippines.

About 1,200 European Jews fled to the Philippines from 1937 to 1941, escaping the throes of the Nazis only to face another bloody war under Japanese occupation.

Many of the Jews came from Austria and Germany, as the anti-Semitic policies including the Nuremberg race laws intensified. Unable to immigrate to countries like the United Kingdom and the United States, thousands of Jews escaped to places like Shanghai in China, Sousa in the Dominican Republic and Manila.

Those who arrived in Manila didn’t realize that they had escaped the Holocaust only to be caught in the war in the Eastern front, where the Philippines came under attack.

“We were going from the frying pan to the fire,” Hershfield said. “We went from Nazi persecutors to the Japanese.”

The Philippines capital was liberated after a grueling, month-long campaign in the Battle of Manila, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, which now marks its 70th anniversary.

From persecution to a welcome
This little known chapter of history about Jewish refugees in the Philippines has inspired two documentaries and talk of a possible movie.

“We know about stories like Anne Frank, ‘Schindler’s List’ — the things that grab popular imagination,” said Michelle Ephraim, whose father, Frank Ephraim escaped to the Philippines after Kristallnacht in 1939. “Once you bring an Asia element, it becomes so complicated, interesting and surprising.”

About 40 of the Philippines refugees are alive today, according to documentary filmmakers. They were children when they arrived in the Philippines over 70 years ago.

“That was like a rebirth,” said Noel Izon, the filmmaker of the documentary, “An Open Door: Jewish Rescue in the Philippines,” in which he interviewed several Jewish refugees. “They went from certain death to this life.”Among them was Frank Ephraim, who arrived in Manila at the age of eight. He recounted his experience in his biography, “Escape to Manila: From Nazi Tyranny to Japanese Terror.”

“My father got a lot of positive attention, coming from a place where Jews were exiled and treated so poorly,” said his daughter, of his escape from Europe. Frank Ephraim died in 2006.

“The Filipinos were incredibly kind and treated him extremely well. There was an element of something so redemptive.”

How the Philippines became a haven
Manuel Quezon, the first president of the Philippine Commonwealth, and a group of Americans that included future U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Freiders, the Jewish-American brothers, became increasingly concerned about the treatment of Jews in Europe during the late 1930s.

“They had a shared view of the world, they were men who understood what was happening in Europe,” said Russ Hodge, the co-producer of the documentary “Rescue in the Philippines.” That documentary was screened in the Philippines with the country’s president, Benigno Aquino in attendance last year

12 Elul – Birth of Nachmanides (1294)

Ramban Synagogue and Igeret Haramban (the letter from the Ramban to his son)

From Wikipedia

Nahmanides [Nah-man-nid-ez] (רבי משה בן נחמן), also known as Rabbi Moses ben Naḥman Girondi, Bonastruc ça (de) Porta and by his acronym Ramban (/rɑːmˈbɑːn/;1194–1270), was a leading medieval Jewish scholar, Spanish Sephardic rabbi, philosopher, physician, kabbalist, and biblical commentator. He was raised, studied, and lived for most of his life in Girona, Catalonia, Spain
“Nahmanides” is a Greek-influenced formation meaning “son of Naḥman”. He is also commonly known by his Hebrew acronym, “רמב״ן” (RaMBaN, for Rabbi Moshe ben Naḥman). His Catalan name was Bonastruc ça Porta, (also written Saporta, de Porta).
The Ramban was born in Girona in 1194, where he grew up and studied (hence his name “Girondi”), and died in the Land of Israel about 1270.[1] He was the grandson of Isaac ben Reuben of Barcelona and cousin of Jonah Gerondi (the Rabbeinu Yonah); possibly his brother was Benveniste de Porta, the bailie of Barcelona.[clarification needed] Among his teachers in Talmud were Judah ben Yakkar and Meïr ben Nathan of Trinquetaille, and he is said to have been instructed in Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) by his countryman Azriel of Gerona,[2] who was in turn a disciple of Isaac the Blind. foto wikipedia read more… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nahmanides

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the life, times and legacy of the great Jewish medieval philsopher, Maimonides. Also known as Rambam, Maimonides was a philosopher, theologian, lawyer and physician whose works are still influential today. Melvyn is joined by Sir Anthony Kenny, philosopher and former Master of Balliol College, Oxford; Anne Hudson, Emeritus Professor of Medieval English at the University of Oxford; and Rob Lutton, Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Nottingham.

Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (1135-1204) was a towering figure in medieval Jewish history, and continues to cast a long shadow into the Jewish present. Nevertheless, the work of the philosopher-physician endured significant controversy, including an especially sad episode in which Jews actually consigned his works to the flames. Chabad’s First Siyyum – The Rebbe Speaks on the Rambam (Maimonides) Campaign

More at http://home.jemedia.org/
One should search for ways to bring another Jew to the study of Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah. One way is to celebrate the conclusion of Mishneh Torah, which includes in it all the laws of the Oral Torah. If you cause a tumult that there will be a celebration tomorrow, or the next day, those who don’t know what it is will start to ask: “What is the excitement?” What is it all about?” And most importantly they will ask: “What does this mean for me?”

To serve as an everlasting memento of the event, each celebration should have someone deliver a novel insight explaining a passage of Mishneh Torah. They should discuss a subject that is fitting for publication, to be distributed amongst those who take part in the celebration. Then each one can bring the memento home and show his wife and children that he was at this celebration and this was discussed, and he can ask his son, daughter or wife for their thoughts on the subject as well.

Moshe Halbertal: “Maimonides: Life and Thought” Book Launch

Moshe Halbertal, Gruss Professor of Law at NYU School of Law, and Noah Feldman, Bemis Professor of International Law at Harvard Law School, discuss Halbertal’s new book, “Maimonides: Life and Thought.”

Maimonides was published by Princeton University Press on Thursday, November 21, 2013. This conversation took place on the release day.

About the book (via Princeton U. Press):

Maimonides was the greatest Jewish philosopher and legal scholar of the medieval period, a towering figure who has had a profound and lasting influence on Jewish law, philosophy, and religious consciousness. This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to his life and work, revealing how his philosophical sensibility and outlook informed his interpretation of Jewish tradition.

Moshe Halbertal vividly describes Maimonides’s childhood in Muslim Spain, his family’s flight to North Africa to escape persecution, and their eventual resettling in Egypt. He draws on Maimonides’s letters and the testimonies of his contemporaries, both Muslims and Jews, to offer new insights into his personality and the circumstances that shaped his thinking. Halbertal then turns to Maimonides’s legal and philosophical work, analyzing his three great books–Commentary on the Mishnah, the Mishneh Torah, and the Guide of the Perplexed. He discusses Maimonides’s battle against all attempts to personify God, his conviction that God’s presence in the world is mediated through the natural order rather than through miracles, and his locating of philosophy and science at the summit of the religious life of Torah. Halbertal examines Maimonides’s philosophical positions on fundamental questions such as the nature and limits of religious language, creation and nature, prophecy, providence, the problem of evil, and the meaning of the commandments.

A stunning achievement, Maimonides offers an unparalleled look at the life and thought of this important Jewish philosopher, scholar, and theologian

This Day in Jewish History, 1890 Man Ray Is Born, Won’t Care How World Sees His Art. Avante-garde artist Man Ray, a product of constant evolution, ..

Portrait of Man Ray and Salvador Dali, Paris
From Wikipedia
Man Ray (born Emmanuel Radnitzky, August 27, 1890 – November 18, 1976) was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in France. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. He was best known for his photography, and he was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. Man Ray is also noted for his work with photograms, which he called “rayographs” in reference to himself.[1] read more…
Man Ray was born as Emmanuel Radnitzky in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. in 1890.[3] He was the eldest child of Russian Jewish immigrants.[3] He had a brother and two sisters, the youngest born in 1897 shortly after they settled in the Williamsburg[3]neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. In early 1912, the Radnitzky family changed their surname to Ray. Man Ray’s brother chose the surname in reaction to the ethnic discrimination and anti-Semitism prevalent at the time. Emmanuel, who was called “Manny” as a nickname, changed his first name to Man and gradually began to use Man Ray as his combined single name Foto Wikipedia read more… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_Ray

Photographer Man Ray – A Film by Jean-Paul Fargier 1998

A Film by Jean-Paul Fargier 1998
Coproduction by Le Centre Georges Pompidou – Paris Premiere – Les Films du Tambour de Soie
with the participation of La Cinquieme et France 3
Commentary by Jeremy Nicklin

“I do not photograph nature. I photograph my visions.”

Man Ray, the master of experimental and fashion photography was also a painter, a filmmaker, a poet, an essayist, a philosopher, and a leader of American modernism. Known for documenting the cultural elite living in France, Man Ray spent much of his time fighting the formal constraints of the visual arts. Ray’s life and art were always provocative, engaging, and challenging.

In this 1932 self portrait, the wrist watch is not a gratuitous detail. It echoes the artist’s concentrated, absorbed gaze marking the passage of time.

Photography is all about time. For the photographer, time is a matter of life and death.

Charting Man Ray’s life from his 42 years in the United States to his life in France, this documentary explores the influences on Man Ray’s photography and art.

Allthough not technically a tutorial, the photographer and artist can benefit by exploring the influences and techniques used to construct an image not only as a means of recording time, but as a medium for releasing creative energy between the artist, the subject and the spectator
