Dudi Kalish & Son Moshe Sing New Song

07.06.2015
Composer and choir leader Dudi Kalisch was flown in from Israel to Montreal, Canada, last February to perform at the ninth annual dinner of Yaldei, an organization dedicated to helping children with developmental challenges reach their full potential..

Together with the Shearim orchestra, he sang popular melodies as well as his own original compositions. He was joined by both the Zimra men’s choir and the Zimra boy’s choir.

The highlight of the evening was when he debuted a new song he wrote just the night before.

In the video released today, Kalish sings that song once again, this time along with his young son Moshe, and Meir Dov Klein of Montreal.

JEWISH kosher food in Vietnam – ‘Chabad’ Saigon

08.10.2015
Today I’m at Chabad, a Jewish center and restaurant in Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I have the burger and Shakshuka. So this is not your ordinary food. This is food prepared to the Jewish standards in that the animals must be tended the right way and the
ingredients must be Jewish standards. This is Kosher food in Vietnam of all places. So how does this place and why does this place exist? Jewish travelers and residents of Vietnam must follow the religious and food standards that they abide to. This place is cool because the Rabbis and staff talk a lot with the customers, Jewish or non Jewish. Do check out Chabad. It’s a wonderful place. Very interesting and a lot of fun! ALSO REMEMBER TO CALL ON WEEKENDS! JEWISH PEOPLE TAKE THEIR WEEKENDS QUITE SERIOUSLY SO TRY NOT TO GO ON WEEKENDS. GO ON WEEKDAYS!!!

Synopsis

Iconic designer Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz in New York City on October 14, 1939. Lauren worked in retail before developing a line of neckties. The brand he established, Polo, is now one part of an empire that includes fragrances, home furnishings and luxury clothing. Lauren has used his personal fortune to amass a collection of rare and classic cars.

Early Life

Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz in the Bronx, New York City, on October 14, 1939. His parents were Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Belarus. At the age of 16, Ralph and his brother Jerry changed their last name to Lauren, having been teased consistently at school. Another brother, Lenny, retained the family name.

Lauren attended Baruch College in Manhattan, where he studied business for two years. After a brief stint in the Army, Lauren took a sales job at Brooks Brothers.

Fashion Career

In 1967, Lauren began designing men’s neckties, branding them under the name “Polo” and selling them at large department stores, including Bloomingdale’s. Lauren then expanded his designs to a full menswear line.

In 1970, Lauren was awarded the Coty Award for his menswear designs. Following this recognition, he released a line of women’s suits tailored in a classic men’s style. In 1972, Lauren released a short-sleeve cotton shirt in 24 colors. This design, emblazoned with the Polo logo, became the brand’s signature look. Lauren subsequently broadened his brand to include a luxury clothing line called Ralph Lauren Purple, a home-furnishing collection called Ralph Lauren Home, and a collection of fragrances. Polo currently produces clothing for men, women and children. Lauren has also designed Olympic uniforms for Team USA.

Polo expanded rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s, opening boutiques across the United States and abroad. In 1984, Lauren opened the flagship store in New York’s Rhinelander Mansion. The company went public on June 11, 1997, traded under the symbol RL.

The success of Polo has earned Lauren a personal fortune estimated at $6.5 billion. This figure, if accurate, would make Lauren the 122nd richest person in the world.

Personal Life

Lauren married receptionist Ricky Anne Low-Beer in New York City in 1964. He successfully concealed the fact that Ricky was only half Jewish from his parents before the wedding.

The Laurens are the parents of three children: Andrew, David and Dylan. David Lauren is the only one of the three to have made his career at Polo. In 2011 he married Lauren Bush, the niece of former President George W. Bush and the granddaughter of former President George H.W. Bush. Andrew Lauren is a film producer, while Dylan Lauren is the owner of the New York City candy store Dylan’s Candy Bar.

Lauren underwent surgery in the mid-1980s to remove a benign tumor from his brain.

Using his considerable fortune, Lauren has amassed a famous collection of rare automobiles. He has between 50 and 100 cars, including a 1930 Mercedes-Benz Count Trossi SSK known as “The Black Prince.” In 2005, Lauren allowed his collection to be displayed at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In 2011, a selection from his car collection was exhibited in Paris

Punk Jews – The Full Documentary

From Hasidic punk rockers, Yiddish street performers, African-American Jewish activists, this film covers politics, art, fashion, and religion like you have never seen before. Punk Jews explores a rising trend among committed Jews who are sincerely asking and expressing what it really means to be Jewish in the 21st century while smashing stereotypes. The term ‘punk’ is usually used to describe a group of singers with Mohawks and safety pins in their ears but the true essence of punk are people that don’t conform to the established expectations, who express themselves freely regardless of the opinions of others. This documentary is about ‘punk’ Jews.

Like most religious cultures, Judaism is struggling to bridge the gap between tradition and the modern world. There seem to be many different contradictory interpretations of Jewish traditions and many wrestle to find the answers to common questions regarding the stereotypes, rules, and regulations. This film takes us to New York City where there’s a new movement of young Jewish people expressing Judaism in unconventional ways. They are defying the norm at any cost as they embrace their Jewish identity in their own rediscovered ways.

Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Brooklyn

26.11.2013
http://israelvideosfeed.comBorough Park (usually spelled Boro Park by its residents), is a neighborhood in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City in the United States; Borough Park covers an extensive grid of streets between Bay Ridge and Prospect Park. Borough Park had its beginnings in a few streets of cottages called “Blythebourne” erected in 1887 by the speculative builder, Electus B. Litchfield.Another developer, William Reynolds, built more speculative housing in the area, which was served by a steam railroad, the Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island West End Line.
Borough Park is home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities outside of Israel, with one of the largest concentrations of Jews in the United States, and Orthodox traditions rivaling many insular communities. Since the average number of children in Hasidic and Hareidi families is 6.72, Borough Park is experiencing sharp growth. It is an economically diverse area, with rich, working class and poor people living side-by-side and going to the same schools and synagogues.
Its heart lies between 9th and 18th Avenues and 40th and 61st Streets. Borough Park is patrolled by the NYPD’s 66th [6] Precinct and by Boro Park Shomrim Citizen Safety Patrol

To Be a Jew in the Free World | Official Trailer

06.01.2014
http://www.myjli.com/

What was it like for our ancestors to say goodbye to the shtetl, to set out to discover new lives for themselves, along with all of the liberties the free world had to offer?

At the dawn of the enlightenment, how did our parents adapt their Judaism to the developments of a modern age?

What can we learn from their struggles to connect deeply with our own Jewish identities?

This new course will give you the opportunity to make sense of your personal Jewishness; it will help you overcome perceived incompatibilities between Judaism and modern society; and it will provide you with the clarity and conviction to pass on a legacy of Jewish pride to the next generation.

Sobibor 14 octobre 1943 16 heures 2001

04.04.2015

Pesach Burstein – Sonny Boy, Polish Shtetl, Columbia 1928

17.09.2007
Pesach Burstein ran away from home in Poland to join a traveling Yiddish theater troupe, and wandered from country to country. He was arrested as a spy by Russians during World War I. He came to the USA in the 1923, when his troupe was sponsored by Boris Thomashefsky to play on the Upper East Side Yiddish theatres on Manhattan’s Second Avenue. Securing a contract with Columbia Records, he went on to record a number of hits, including the Yiddish version of Sonny Boy, and Odessa Mama. He married twice, the second time to Lillian Lux, an upcoming star of the Yiddish stage. He performed The Komediant and A Khasene in Shtetl and other popular Yiddish productions in numerous productions all over the world, first with his wife and his troupe, and later along with his twin children Mike and Susan as well (advertised as the Four Bursteins, the twins were given stage names of Motele and Zisele).

After the Holocaust, due to a drastic reduction in the size of the Yiddish audience, he was instrumental in finding out diasporic communities as far afield as South America, and East Europe, as well as Israel. He initially settled in Israel but later left due to the state tax levied on Yiddish theater for promotion of the Hebrew language, and problems with authorities.

His family and troupe also performed extensively in upstate New York in the Borscht Belt (the Catskill Mountains area), and he later opened his own theater in Brooklyn – The Hopkinson. His troupe usually performed crowd-pulling acts, but won critical acclaim in Israel and on Broadway for performing Itzik Manger’s Songs of the Megillah (Yiddish: Megille Lider – the longest running Yiddish production to date in Israel, released on Broadway as Megilla of Itzik Manger). He also performed a small role in the Israel Becker-directed movie Shnei Kuni Leml, starring his son. On the 100th anniversary of his birth, director Arnon Goldfinger directed a documentary film about the lives and careers of the Burstein family – The Komediant, named after Burstein’s career and being the name of one of his shows.

Mieczysław Fogg – Ostatnia niedziela, 1936

20.09.2007
The „Last Sunday” — erroneously called „THAT Last Sunday” — was composed by Jerzy Petersburski in 1936. It is a nostalgic tango with lyrics by Zenon Friedwald describing the final meeting of former lovers who are parting. The Polish title was “To Ostatnia Niedziela” (“The Last Sunday”). The song was extremely popular and was performed by numerous artists (best kown performance by Mieczysław Folg). Along the way, it first gained the nick-name of “Suicide Tango” due to its sad lyric (although, the real „suicie song” in the night restaurants of Eastern Europe — where the shoot in the brow at 12 at night was not any unusual happening – was In 1930s another sad „Sunday”: the „Gloomy Sunday” (in Polish: „Smutna niedziela”) by a Hungarian composer Rezső Seress. (Soon, an international hit; in the US sung by Billie Holiday).
But this Polish „Last Sunday” song also had a terribly sad fate. During World War II In the concentrations camps it was often played while Jewish prisoners were led to the gas chambers and ovens, to be executed. During World War II its Russian version was prepared by Iosif Alveg and performed by Leonid Utyosov under the title of “Weary Sun” (Russian: “Utomlyennoye Solntse”). After World War II, the song remained largely successful and appeared in a number of films, including Yuriy Norshteyn’s 1979 “Tale of Tales” (considered by many international critics to be the greatest animated film ever made), the award-winning Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “White” (1994) and Nikita Mikhalkov’s “Burnt by the Sun” of the same year. The Russian title of the song also became the name-sake for the latter film and — as the result – even the more educated and worldly Russians nowadays consider the old tango from Warsaw their „Russian national song”.

Recording: Mieczysław Fogg – To ostatnia niedziela (Petersburski/Friedwald), Syrena-Electro 1936

Scenes of Jewish Life in Kerala, India (1937)

11.10.2015
Documentary footage made by anthropologist David Mandelbaum in September, 1937.

David Goodman Mandelbaum (1911-1987), who taught at the University of California, Berkeley from 1946 until his retirement in 1978, was one of the first cultural anthropologists to undertake ethnographic research in India. In 1937, he visited Kerala during the High Holy Days, and spent two weeks with the Jewish community there, documenting many of their customs, taking pographs and a short film, and collecting materials he published in “The Jewish Way of Life in Cochin” (Jewish Social Studies 1/1939) and in several later articles. Mandelbaum served in the U.S. Army in India and Burma during the Second World War, and taught at the University of Minnesota before coming to U.C. Berkeley. His many publications included the authoritative two-volume “Society in India” (1970). His analysis of the social structure of the Kerala Jews had a significant influence on subsequent scholarship about them.

JERUSALEM STABBING TERROR ATTACK 3 October 2015

04.10.2015
JERUSALEM, SATURDAY 3 October 2015. Two Israeli men, one in his 40s and the other in his 20s, died of their wounds Saturday night after being stabbed in Jerusalem’s Old City in a terror attack.
The younger man’s wife was in serious condition and their two-year-old baby was lightly wounded. The mother was taken to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem and was undergoing surgery. The toddler was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment where he remained in stable condition.
The men were stabbed in the upper body and were unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene.
The father was taken to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus where he died of his wounds shortly after the attack. The second man was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center where he also died Saturday night.
When the attack began, the injured woman managed to run and alert a group of Border Police forces nearby who arrived on the scene and shot and killed the attacker.
In video footage that emerged Saturday night after the attack, a woman’s screams can be heard followed by gunshots.

Thousands Protest Terror in Front of Prime Minister’s Residence

05.10.2015
Thousands of people are protesting in front of the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem on Monday night, in response to escalating terror against Jews and Israelis and open calls for a third intifada [terror war – ed.] against Israel.

The demonstration also included hakafot shniyot, dancing with the Torah, a custom Israelis observe to extend the Shmini Atzeret/Simchat Torah holiday slightly and leave the High Holiday season with joy.

Afterwards, the rally began, with Likud ministers Yariv Levin and Haim Katz and the regional council heads of Judea and Samaria joining the crowd.

“We came here to shout” Enough! Enough!,” Samaria (Shomron) Regional Council head Yossi Dagan stated to the press. Dagan has kept a constant vigil in front of the Prime Minister’s Residence since Friday, in protest over the murders of Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin.

“We did not go to [US President Barack] Obama or the EU. We are here because the prime minister is responsible,” Dagan stated. “What was will be no more. You cannot continue to bow to terrorism.”

Tourism Minister Yariv Levin also spoke at the rally.

“Those who think that terrorism can beat us here today see us and understand: it’s impossible to win,” said Levin. “I hope that the Cabinet will now make appropriate and courageous decisions.”

“There is a link between terrorism and a speech by the terrorist, [PA Chairman] Mahmoud Abbas,” he added. “The Palestinian Authority and its leader are the heart of the problem.”

“The man who finances terrorism does not want peace,” he said. “Security is the key to settlement and tonight I hope to hear building permits approved, so we can defeat terrorism the Jewish way.”

Israel is under pressure to take action after two people were killed and two others, including a two-year-old toddler, were wounded in a stabbing attack in Jerusalem’s Old City on Saturday evening. A few hours later a 15-year-old Israeli was stabbed near Damascus Gate in Jerusalem.

RT’s Paula Slier reported that the Israeli military is already carrying out retaliatory measures against Palestinians in the West Bank.

At least a dozen Palestinians were arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning following a raid by the Israeli Defense Forces in Nablus, which is one of the largest cities in the Palestinian West Bank, she said.

3 wounded in stabbing attack in Jerusalem

03.10.2015
Three people were stabbed in an attack in Jerusalem’s Old City on Saturday evening. Israeli police say they have shot a man they identified as “terrorist.”
The attack took place near the landmark Lions’ Gate. One of the wounded is reportedly in a serious condition, while the other two have suffered minor injuries.

“The Arab suspect repeatedly stabbed the three Israelis while they were walking near Lion’s Gate,” Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said, according to the Jerusalem Post.

“Border Police and Police responded immediately and shot the terrorist, neutralizing him. Police have cordoned off the area and are searching for a possible accomplice.”

Haaretz newspaper reported that the attacker is in serious condition.

All the victims are members of the same ultra-Orthodox family, who were walking towards the Western Wall when they were attacked, Channel 2 reports.

Paramedics rushed to the site to provide medical assistance.

05.10.2015
At the conclusion of holiday and the beginning of the Second Day Yom Tov of the Diaspora (Simchat Torah in the Diaspora), there is a custom in Israel to do Second Hakafot, during which people go into the streets with Torah scrolls and dance another time. The source of this custom is attributed to Rabbi Hayyim ben Joseph Vital, who described the customs of his teacher, Isaac Luria, in Safed. Vital explains Luria had the custom
to visit a number of synagogues after Simchat Torah which delayed the end of the prayer services and did Hakafot. From there the custom spread to Hebron and the Beit El Synagogue in Jerusalem, and subsequently spread to other congregations in Jerusalem before becoming accepted across Israel. The custom spread from Israel to communities in Italy and the Near East—Turkey, Baghdad, Persia, Kurdistan, and India.

The Life Saving Female Paramedics of Operation Protective Edge

17.10.2014
The IDF’s latest operation in the Gaza Strip, Operation Protective Edge, had a high cost of human life. Sixty-seven soldiers were killed on the ground and hundreds of others were injured during the fighting. The first soldiers to provide medical treatment to the wounded are the IDF’s paramedics, who are often female soldiers. Noam and Chen entered into Gaza with infantry troops with one mission: to treat injured soldiers and save as many lives as possible.

From Wikipedia,
Anno Mundi (Latin for “in the year of the world”; Hebrew: לבריאת העולם, “from the creation of the world”), abbreviated as AM or A.M., orYear After Creation,[1] is a calendar era based on the biblical accounts of the creation of the world and subsequent history. While numerous efforts have been made to determine the biblical date of Creation, yielding varying results, two in particular have establishedepochs for significant calendars, including one that is still in use today.
The Hebrew calendar epoch is based on twelfth-century Rabbinic estimates for the year of creation which are calculated from data obtained in the Hebrew Masoretic text.[2] This calendar is used within Jewish communities for religious and other purposes. The calendar’sepoch, corresponding to the calculated date of the world’s creation, is equivalent to sunset on the Julian proleptic calendar date 6 October 3761 BC.[3] (In the Hebrew calendar, the day begins at sunset.) The new year begins at Rosh Hashanah (roughly in September); year AM 5776 began at sunset on 13 September 2015 (Gregorian)

Montefiore Synagogue Ramsgate Open Day 2007

19.10.2007
THE MONTEFIORE SYNAGOGUE AND MAUSOLEUM
Moses Montefiore (1784-1885) was a towering figure of Victorian England, renowned locally, nationally and internationally. The grandson of wealthy Sephardi London merchants originally from Livorno in Italy he retired from the Stock Exchange a rich man to devote his life to philanthropy. He gave generously locally: his mayoral gold chain is still worn by Ramsgate mayors. Nationally he worked for removal of disabilities for all dissenters; he helped establish the non-denominational University College London. Internationally he most famously fought for and helped financially his co-religionists abroad in times of persecution and established a new suburb and industries for impoverished Jews of Jerusalem and of the Holy Land.

He first came to Ramsgate in 1812 on his honeymoon with his wife Judith Cohen, sister-in-law to Nathan Rothschild. After his first visit to Jerusalem he bought, in 1831, East Cliff Lodge with its grounds, now George VI Park. The pious and observant Montefiores immediately expressed their intention to build a synagogue as a private `chapel’ on their estate. David Mocatta, a cousin, was hired to design it.He was the first Anglo-Jewish architect, a pupil of Sir John Soane and architect for railway stations on the Brighton Line. Mocatta estimated the cost at between £1500 and £1600 exclusive of the interior which was to cost £300 and £400. The foundation stone was laid on the New Moon of Tammuz (Leo) 5691 anno mundi (1) or 9th. August 1831 in the presence of large numbers of the family; terra santa[sic](2) was placed where the Ark with its scrolls would eventually stand.
It was on Sunday the 16th. June 1833 that the dedication of the synagogue took place.
The Chief Rabbis of both the Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities were present, leading a large and distinguished congregation from all over the United Kingdom.
`The simple building is based on a rectangular plan with canted corners plus a semicircular apse at the back to accommodate the Ark. It has whitewashed stucco walls and a lead roof. The clock on the façade, an unusual feature of synagogues (the most famous being that on Prague’s baroque Jewish Town Hall) is inscribed in English with the motto TIME FLIES. VIRTUE ALONE REMAINS. The chiming clock is the only example in an English Synagogue.'(3)

This clock has marked the time for numerous Ramsgatonians, speeding many a schoolboy late for school. Sir Moses Montefiore’s arms, by the side of the entrance, are from the now demolished Judith, Lady Montefiore College; they were placed there after 1960.

`The interior: Semicircular stone steps (at north) lead to a tiny vestibule with a marble washstand. The interior of the small prayer hall was originally dimly lit from above by an octagonal dome and lantern of clear and red glass, a feature typical of the Regency, and by a tiny window over the Ark now filled with a stained glass Decalogue. Only later were windows introduced at gallery level. The classicism of the tapering Ark is modified by the lotus-bud capitals, which give it a slightly Egyptian feel.
Other alterations to the interior have somewhat compromised the restrained neoclassicism: the cream, pink and grey granite and marble lining the walls (in 1912), replacement and rearrangement of furniture (by oak in 1933; the Reader’s desk is now in the centre) and the introduction of iron gallery supports and stained glass (also 1933). The gallery faces the Ark along the west wall and has a traditional high latticework mehitsah (*). In 1933 the original timber Royal Family prayer board was replaced. It can now be seen at Bristol Synagogue’ (4)
The present Prayer for the Royal Family is for King George V and Queen Mary.
In the lobby there is a memorial to a member of the family who was killed on active service at Gallipoli during World War I.

The synagogue is lit by candles in their original brass chandeliers, as at its parent synagogue Bevis Marks in London. Sir Moses’ own seat by the Ark is still to be seen as is that of Lady
Montefiore’s in the women’s gallery (no.3).

The Montefiores travelled widely and visited the Holy Land seven times. The suburb built outside the old walls of Jerusalem, `Yemin Moshe’ (the Right Hand of Moses in honour of Sir Moses) had a distinctly English flavour, and one might say even a very Ramsgate flavour: the ironwork is from G S Culver’s Ramsgate Metalwork factory and the windmill was based on the Hereson flour mill. It was built by Messrs. Holman, engineers and millwrights, of Canterbury.

25 Tishrei (1809) – Death of Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev

Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev

From Wikipedia
Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev (1740–1809 in Berdychiv[1]), also known as the Berdichever, was a Hasidic leader. He was the rabbi ofRyczywół, Żelechów, Pinsk and Berdychiv, for which he is best known. He was one of the main disciples of the Maggid of Mezritch, and of his disciple Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg, whom he succeeded as rabbi of Ryczywół.[2]
Reb Levi Yitzchok was known as the “defense attorney” for the Jewish people, because it was believed that he could intercede on their behalf before God. Known for his compassion for every Jew, he was therefore one of the most beloved leaders of Eastern EuropeanJewry. He authored the Hasidic classic Kedushas Levi,[3] which is a commentary on many Jewish religious books and laws, and is arranged according to the weekly Torah portion. He is considered by some to be the founder of Hasidism in central Poland. Read More Button--orange https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi_Yitzchok_of_Berditchev

Emotional 100,000 Attend Selichot at the Western Wall

 23.09.2015
Tens of thousands of Jews visited the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem on Monday night, gathering to ask for forgiveness and mercy in Selichot prayers before the Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) fast despite – or in spite of – the tense security situation in the capital.

As many as 100,000 people may have visited the Kotel throughout the night for the culmination of the penitentiary prayers, which ends some 40 days of prayer for Sephardic Jews and roughly two weeks for Ashkenazic Jews.

The prayer drew a variety of people – men and women, children and the elderly, and observant and non-observant Jews.
Both Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi David Lau and Sephardic Chief Rabbi Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef attended the service, as well as Kotel Rabbi Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, attended the services.

Exciting, thousands of Jews pray “Selichot” at the Western Wall

09.09.2013
In the Sephardic tradition, recital of Selichot in preparation for the High Holidays begins on the second day of the Hebrew month of Elul. In the Ashkenazic tradition, it begins on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah. If, however, the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Monday or Tuesday, Selichot are said beginning the Saturday night prior to ensure that Selichot are recited at least four times. This may be because originally the pious would fast for ten days during the season of repentance, and four days before Rosh Hashanah were added to compensate for the four of the Ten days of Repentance on which fasting is forbidden – the two days of Rosh Hashanah, Shabbat Shuvah, and the day preceding Yom Kippur – and, while the fasts have since been abandoned, the Selichot that accompanied them have been retained. Alternatively, the Rosh Hashanah liturgy includes the Biblical phrase, “you shall observe a burnt offering”, and like an offering which needs to be scrutinised for defects for four days, so too four days of self-searching are needed before the day of judgment.[1]
Selichot refers to both the poetic piyyutim that compose the service as well as to the service itself. Sephardic Selichot services are identical each day. In the Ashkenazic tradition, although the text and length of specific prayers varies from day to day, the overall format remains the same and is prefaced by Ashrei (Psalm 145) and the Half-Kaddish.
Selichot are usually recited between midnight and dawn. Some recite it at night after the ‘Arvit service or in the morning before the Shacharit service due to the convenience of synagogue attendance at these times.
Arguably the most important and certainly most popular night of Selichot in the Ashkenazi tradition is the first night, when many women and girls as well as men and boys attend the late-night service on Saturday night. The hazzan wears a kittel and sings elaborate melodies. In some congregations, it is not unusual for a choir to participate in this first night’s service. This night also has more Selichot than any other night prior to Rosh Hashanah eve. The other nights are more sparsely attended and those services are often led by a layperson, rather than a trained musician, and with melodies that are less elaborate than the first night.

The War Diaries of an Unorthodox Auschwitz Victim Are Published

Haaretz http://www.haaretz.com/news/features/this-day-in-jewish-history/.premium-1.678035

The initial selections came out on this day in 1981, edited by Gaarlandt and published by De Haan, and a complete collection of her letters and diaries

Etty Hillesum

From Wikipedia
Esther “Etty” Hillesum (15 January 1914 – 30 November 1943) was a Jewish woman whose letters and diaries, kept between 1941 and 1943, describe life in Amsterdam during the German occupation. They were published posthumously in 1981. ,,,,,
Esther (Etty) Hillesum was born on 15 January 1914 in her parents’ home at Molenwater 77 in the town of Middelburg, where her father Levie (Louis) Hillesum had been teaching classical languages since 1911. In Amsterdam, on 7 December 1912, he married Etty’s mother, Riva (Rebecca) Bernstein, who was also living in Middelburg at the time. Etty’s father was born in Amsterdam on 25 May 1880, as the youngest of four children, to the merchant Jacob Samuel Hillesum and his wife Esther Hillesum-Loeza; ,,,,,,,,
Before her final departure for Westerbork, Etty gave her Amsterdam diaries to Maria Tuinzing, who had meanwhile come to live in the house on the Gabriel Metsustraat as well. Etty asked her to pass them along to the writer Klaas Smelik with the request that they be published if she did not return. In 1946 or 1947, Maria Tuinzig turned over the exercise books and a bundle of letters to Klaas Smelik. His daughter Johanna (Jopie) Smelik then typed out sections of the diaries, but Klaas Smelik’s attempts to have the diaries published in the 1950s proved fruitless. Two letters Etty had written, in December 1942 and on 24 August 1943, concerning conditions in Westerbork, did get published. They appeared in the autumn of 1943 in an illegal edition by David Koning at the recommendation of Etty’s friend Petra (Pim) Eldering. ,,,,,, Read More Button--orange https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etty_Hillesum

US-Russia Tensions on Show as Putin and Obama Clash Over Syria

28.09.2015
The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and the US president, Barack Obama, clashed on Monday over their competing visions for Syria, with Obama urging a political transition to replace the Syrian president but Putin warning it would be a mistake to abandon the current government. Addressing the UN general assembly, Putin said it was a huge mistake not to engage the Syrian army in the fight against Islamic State. He said the Syrian military was the only force truly fighting Isis militants in the country. The Russian president, making his first appearance at the general assembly for 10 years, also criticised the west for arming “moderate” rebels in Syria, saying they later come to join Isis. Without naming the United States, he said a “single centre of dominance has emerged after the end of cold war,” and attempts have been made to revise the UN role.

“Jerusalem” is a song by Hasidic Jewish reggae singer Matisyahu, produced by Jimmy Douglass & The Ill Factor, and first released in 2006 on his major label debut, Youth.

The song itself is based on Psalm 137, verses 5-6, one of the most well known of the Psalms: “If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither, let my tongue stick to my palate if I cease to think of you, if I do not keep Jerusalem in memory even at my happiest hour.”

The psalm is said to have been written during the Babylonian Exile by Jeremiah expressing the desire of the Israelites to return to Jerusalem.

The Holy Places in Jerusalem amazing clip HD

http://israelvideosfeed.com Jerusalem : יְרוּשָׁלַיִם‎‎ Yerushaláyim, ISO 259-3 Yrušalaym, “Abode of Peace”; Arabic: القُد, al-Quds [al-Sharif], “The Holy Sanctuary”)[ii] is the capital of Israel, though not internationally recognized as such.[iii] If the area and population of East Jerusalem is included, it is Israel’s largest city in both population and area. with a population of 763,800 residents over an area of 125.1 km2 (48.3 sq m Located in the Judean Mountains, between the Mediterranean Sea and the northern edge of the Dead Sea, modern Jerusalem has grown far beyond the boundaries of the Old City.
Jerusalem is a holy city to the three major Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Judaism, Jerusalem has been the holiest city since, according to the Torah, King David of Israel first established it as the capital of the united Kingdom of Israel in c. 1000 BCE, and his son Solomon commissioned the building of the First Temple in the city.[5] In Christianity, Jerusalem has been a holy city since, according to the New Testament, Jesus was crucified in c. 30 CE and 300 years later Saint Helena found the True Cross in the city. In Sunni Islam, Jerusalem is the third-holiest city.[6][7] It became the first Qibla, the focal point for Muslim prayer (Salah) in 610 CE,[8] and, according to Islamic tradition, Muhammad made his Night Journey there ten years later.[9][10] As a result, and despite having an area of only 0.9 square kilometres (0.35 sq mi),[11] the Old City is home to sites of key religious importance, among them the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque.
During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times.[12] The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th millennium BCE, making Jerusalem one of the oldest cities in the world.[13] The old walled city, a World Heritage site, has been traditionally divided into four quarters, although the names used today—the Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Quarters—were introduced in the early 19th century.[14] The Old City was nominated for inclusion on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger by Jordan in 1982.[15]
Today, the status of Jerusalem remains one of the core issues in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. After the 1967 Arab Israeli War, Israel annexed East Jerusalem (which was controlled by Jordan following the 1948 war) and considers it a part of Israel, although the international community has rejected the annexation as illegal and considers East Jerusalem to be Palestinian territory held by Israel under military occupation.[16][17][18][19] Israel, however, considers the entire city to be a part of Israel following its annexation of East Jerusalem through the Jerusalem Law of 1980.
According to Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics 208,000 Palestinians live in East Jerusalem, which is sought as a future capital of a future Palestinian state.[20][21][22]
All branches of the Israeli government are located in Jerusalem, including the Knesset (Israel’s parliament), the residences of the Prime Minister and President, and the Supreme Court. Jerusalem is home to the Hebrew University and to the Israel Museum with its Shrine of the Book. The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo has ranked consistently as Israel’s top tourist attraction for Israelis

Lyrics :

First Batch of Smuggled Spitfires Takes Off for Israel

History of the Israeli Air Force

foto wikipedia ,, The Black Spitfire
From Wikipedia
The History of the Israel Air Force begins in May 1948, shortly after the formation of the State of Israel. Following Israel’s declaration of independence on May 14, its pre-state national institutions transformed into the agencies of a state, and on May 26, 1948, the Israeli Air Force was formed. Beginning with a small collection of light aircraft, the force soon transformed into a comprehensive fighting force.[1] It has since participated in several wars and numerous engagements, becoming what has been described as “The mightiest air force in the Middle East”
Preceded by the Sherut Avir, the air wing of the Haganah, the Israeli Air Force was officially formed on May 28, 1948, shortly after Israeldeclared statehood and found itself under immediate attack. At first, it was assembled from a hodge-podge collection of civilian aircraft commandeered or donated and converted to military use. A variety of obsolete and surplus ex-World War II combat aircraft were quickly sourced by various means – both legal and illegal – to supplement this fleet. The backbone of the IAF consisted of 25 Avia S-199s(purchased from Czechoslovakia, essentially Czechoslovak-built Messerschmitt Bf 109s) and 62 Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IXEs ferried from Žatec base code-named “Zebra” where pilots also received preliminary flight training. Creativity and resourcefulness were the early foundations of Israeli military success in the air, rather than technology (which, at the inception of the IAF, was generally inferior to that used by Israel’s adversaries).

Jewish People in Brooklyn Are Building Sukkahs

25.09.2015
BROOKLYN – Jewish people in Brooklyn are getting their hammers ready to prepare for Sukkot.

Sukkahs are popping up all around Brooklyn. The temporary dwellings are part of the Jewish harvest holiday of Sukkot that follows Yom Kippur.

“The idea is to connect ourselves with the fragility of life and with the natural world,” says Rabbi Rachel Timoner, of Congregation Beth Elohim. “We eat our meals in them, we dwell in them and there are many people who sleep in them. It is to connect us to the universe that we are a part of and with God and with each other.”

The sukkah being built outside Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope was designed by architect Susan Doban to include a lot of greenery.

“Our roof will have living material,” Doban says. “We’re going to use crabapple branches and one of our walls internally will be clad in living material as well.”

Once complete, the sukkah will stay in front of the synagogue through Oct. 7.
