There’s a famous Hebrew saying, Al Ta’am Varei’ach Ein Lehivakei’ach – You can’t argue over taste or smell. This is a very fortunate epithet in regards to taste in Chazanut and Chazanim. Everyone’s an expert and every Shul-going Jew knows what a good Chazan is.
Whilst not everyone will agree that Moshe Kussevitsky was the finest Chazan who ever lived (see above!), it’s inconceivable that anyone would say that he wasn’t at least, one of the finest.
Moshe Kussevitsky is regarded generally as the Chazan’s Chazan. He was possessed of an outstanding, well-trained, tenor voice of extraordinay range and flexibility and an innate understanding of the art of Chazanut.
Moshe was born on June 9th 1899 at Smargon in Vilna, Lithuania and came from a background of Chazanut. Moshe was the oldest of the four brothers, with Jacob, Simcha and David and, as is well-known, they all went on to become famous Chazanim in their own right.
Moshe began his career at the age of eight as an alto in the choir of Chazan Shlepak and as he grew up he toyed with the idea of becoming an artist or a sculptor. Fortunately, however, he accepted a position as Chazan at the Vilna ‘Savel’s Shul’ and in 1927 he auditioned for the plum position in Poland at the ‘Tlomazke Shul’ in Warsaw where, against the finest opposition, he was awarded the post. He took the opportunity to study voice and music and throughout his life he always learned Torah.
Being in such an illustrious job, his fame spread around Europe very rapidly and soon he was travelling to Brussels, Antwerp, Vienna and London to give concerts.
During the second world war Moshe took his family to Russia and adopted the name Mikhail Kussevitsky. While he was there he sang in the operas Boris Goudenov, Tosca and Rigoletto.
When he returned to Poland he gave a concert at which the ambassadors of the United Kingdom and the United States were in the audience. As a result of this concert he obtained visas for both countries and came to England until 1947, when he went to settle in America.
Moshe continued to travel and concertise all over the world and there will probably be people reading this who will recall his appearance at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 13th March 1955. Fortunately he also made numerous recordings and, even though they were produced on comparatively primitive equipment, it is still possible to appreciate the exceptional quality of his voice and his singing on those that have been re-recorded today.
The last post he held was at the famous Temple Beth El in Boro Park, Brooklyn.
Moshe died on August 23rd 1966 and is buried in Jersualem.
Cantor Moshe Oysher- Drei Dreidel Yiddish
Moishe Oysher: Music
Born in 1907 in Bessarabia, Imperial Russia (Moldova) and died in 1958 in New York. Although he may have come from a family of cantors going back six generations, he seems to have been drawn to the stage and popular entertainment from an early age. Oysher joined a Canadian travelling Yiddish theatrical troupe in 1921 and moved to New York City in 1923. By 1932 he had started his own company, entertaining in the USA and South America. After returning to the USA from Buenos Aires in 1934, he had difficulty finding work in New York’s Yiddish Theater. When he was offered the opportunity to sing for the High Holy Days at the First American-Rumanian Synagogue in NYC’s Lower East Side, he accepted the position and became a cantorial sensation!
Despite his great success as a cantor Moishe Oysher was ever the entertainer and became quite famous for his starring roles in three Yiddish films including, “The Cantor’s Son” (1936), “The Singing Blacksmith” (1938), and “Overture to Glory” (1940). He was also a successful recording artist.
Moishe Oysher was able to combine his passion for the Chazzanut with his love of performance, creating a crowd-pleasing style that thrilled audiences in synagogues and theaters. His recordings represent the world of our fathers and grandfathers who appreciated Oysher’s rich voice and fiery style.

EINE 2500 JAHRE ALTE GESCHICHTE
Die in Marokko lebenden “Nachfahren Abrahams” bilden heute noch die grösste jüdische Gemeinschaft in der arabischen Welt.
Das marokkanische Judentum, das im Laufe der 2500jährigen Geschichte seine Identität als “Juden des Islam” in einer eigenständigen Kultur fand, hat tiefe Spuren hinterlassen. Die erste grosse Einwanderung von Juden nach Marokko erfolgte nach der – von Nebukadnezar angeordneten – Zerstörung des Ersten Tempels in Jerusalem (587 v.Chr.) durch die Assyrer und eine weitere nach der Zerstörung des Zweiten Tempels im Jahre 70 n.Chr. durch die Römer unter Titus. Die Zahl dieser sogenannten “asiatischen Juden” nahm in den folgenden Jahren stetig zu, vor allem durch zum Judentum übergetretene Berberstämme; sie wurden “Toschabim” – eingeborene Juden – genannt.
Das Jahr 1492, das Jahr des Kolumbus und des Falls von Granada – Ende der Maurenherrschaft in Spanien – brachte die bedeutendste Einwanderungswelle nach Marokko. Die katholischen Könige Ferdinand II von Aragonien und Isabella von Kastilien vertrieben die in Spanien ansässigen Juden und Muslime. Sie bildeten die Gruppe der “Megoraschim”, der Ausgewiesenen. Die Juden nannten sich “Sephardim” (aus “Spanien” kommend, hebr.). Sie hatten sofort ihren festen Platz in der marokkanischen Gesellschaft. Der Islam gestattete den “Buchgläubigen” (ahl-el-kitab) als geschützte Untertanen im Hause des Islam (Dar-el-Islam) zu leben. Für den Schutz durch den Sultan mussten die Juden jedoch eine besondere Steuer entrichten.
Weitere jüdische Flüchtlingsströme kamen im 16. Jahrhundert aus Andalusien, wo die Inquisition die Juden besonders grausam verfolgte. Unter ihnen befanden sich auch zahlreiche Marranen (zur Verleugnung ihrer Religion gezwungene Juden), um in Marokko wieder zum Judentum zurückzufinden. Juden aus Frankreich und Italien kamen im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert, welche sich vor allem in den nordmarokkanischen Küstenstädten niederliessen. Zu Beginn des französisch-spanischen Protektorates in Marokko im Jahre 1912 öffneten sich die seit dem Mittelalter bestehenden Judenviertel, die “Mellahs”. So gelang es deren Bewohnern in wenigen Jahrzehnten den Sprung aus der sozialen Rückständigkeit zu vollziehen, und wie ihre muslimischen Landsleute verantwortliche Posten im Bankenwesen, Handwerk, in der Industrie und Verwaltung zu übernehmen.
Die letzte Einwanderungswelle erreichte Marokko während des II. Weltkrieges. Bis heute haben die marokkanischen Juden nicht vergessen, dass sich Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Jussuf (König Mohammed V) geweigert hatte, die “Ausnahmegesetze” des französischen Vichy-Regimes über die “Behandlung der Israeliten” zu unterzeichnen.
Infolge der grossen Auswanderungswelle im Jahre 1948 nach Israel, als auch in den Jahren 1956 (zweiter arabisch-israelischer Krieg) und 1967 (Sechstagekrieg) leben heute lediglich noch 10-15’000 Juden in kleinen Gemeinden über das ganze Land verstreut, vor allem aber in den grösseren Städten.
Marokkos Juden verstehen sich heute als Hüter einer vergangenen Kultur. Nicht zu Unrecht sind sie stolz auf ihr sephardisches Kulturerbe, das eine nicht zu unterschätzende Bedeutung für das gesamte Judentum hat und in Marokko ein nicht wegzudenkender Bestandteil des täglichen Lebens geworden ist.

Shlomo Goren (Hebrew: שלמה גורן) (February 3, 1917 – October 29, 1994), was an Orthodox Religious Zionist rabbi in Israel, aTalmudic scholar and foremost authority on Jewish law. He founded and served as the first head of the Military Rabbinate of theIsrael Defense Forces and subsequently as the third Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel from 1973 to 1983, after which he established ayeshiva in Jerusalem, which he headed until his death.
He served in the Israel Defense Forces during three wars, wrote several award-winning books on Jewish law[citation needed], and was appointed Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv in 1968.
