HERITAGE: CIVILIZATION AND THE JEWS (1984) — 1. A PEOPLE IS BORN

with ABBA EBAN

(DVD description)

Winner of the coveted Peabody Award, HERITAGE: CIVILIZATION AND THE JEWS is the monumental nine-part series spanning three millennia of Jewish history and culture. The series is hosted by former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Abba Eban, who describes it as “a celebration of our common humanistic and moral heritage, explored through the mysteries of preservation, renewal, and resonance of the Jewish people.” From the stony heights of Sinai to the shores of the Dead Sea, from a Greek amphitheater in Delphi to the Forum of ancient Rome, out of the ashes of concentration camps to the rebuilt cities and villages of Israel, “Heritage” brings to life the long and complex history of the Jews and their centuries-old interaction with the rest of Western civilization.

1. A PEOPLE IS BORN (3100 — 586 B.C.E.)
In the experience of exile the vision of the early Israelites was transformed, and the Jewish people was born. In Jewish tradition, the emergence from Egypt has been celebrated by generation after generation in the springtime holiday of Passover, a festival of liberation as passionately observed as any nation’s independence day. Through liberation the exiles saw the hand of a universal God. All the world’s nations were linked in a common destiny, but bound together by a moral law with inescapable consequences.

Jewish Los Angeles: JN1’s Jordana Miller explores LA’s rich and diverse Jewish heritage

26.03.2014

I’m here at the Grauman Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. Where else would we start our special report on the Jews of Los Angeles than here at one of the most famous movie theatres in the entire country? Now why is it called the Grauman Chinese Theatre? That’s because a Jewish kid from Indiana, named Sid Grauman, built this place. Some of the most famous films like the Wizard of Oz premiered here. The Oscars used to take place here. And you probably don’t know it, but it was Sid Grauman’s own idea to put the hands and feet of stars in the wet cement here. Join me now for a very special report on the history of the Jewish community of Los Angeles and some of the very famous faces that built Hollywood.

The Alma and Joseph Gildenhorn Book Series Featuring Simon Schama

26.03.2014

The Alma and Joseph Gildenhorn Book Series will feature Simon Schama, Columbia University History Professor, discussing his new book “The Story of the Jews: Finding the Words (1000 BCE-1492)” (Harper Collins).

Moderator:

Jeffrey Brown, PBS NewsHour chief correspondent for arts, culture, and society
About the book:

In this magnificently illustrated cultural history—the tie-in to the PBS and BBC series The Story of the Jews—Simon Schama details the story of the Jewish experience, tracing it across three millennia, from their beginnings as an ancient tribal people to the opening of the New World in 1492 to the modern day. It is a story like no other: an epic of endurance against destruction, of creativity in oppression, joy amidst grief, the affirmation of life against the steepest of odds. It spans the millennia and the continents—from India to Andalusia and from the bazaars of Cairo to the streets of Oxford. It takes you to unimagined places: to a Jewish kingdom in the mountains of southern Arabia; a Syrian synagogue glowing with radiant wall paintings; the palm groves of the Jewish dead in the Roman catacombs. And its voices ring loud and clear, from the severities and ecstasies of the Bible writers to the love poems of wine bibbers in a garden in Muslim Spain.

In The Story of the Jews, the Talmud burns in the streets of Paris, massed gibbets hang over the streets of medieval London, a Majorcan illuminator redraws the world; candles are lit, chants are sung, mules are packed, ships loaded with spice and gems founder at sea. And a great story unfolds. Not—as often imagined—of a culture apart, but of a Jewish world immersed in and imprinted by the peoples among whom they have dwelled, from the Egyptians to the Greeks, from the Arabs to the Christians. Which makes the story of the Jews everyone’s story, too.

A documentary on the Jewish ( Beta Israel / Falasha ) kingdom that flourished in the land of Kush ( Nubia / ancient Ethiopia ), in what is today Sudan. In the 9th/10th century the kingdom expanded into Axum. The kingdom was the homeland of historical figures, Eldad Ha Dani and Queen Yodit. I decided to make this documentary since no previous work has been done on it.
