En parashá Nasó tenemos la mitzvá de la teshuvá, sin lugar a dudas la mitzvá más grande e integral de todas, pues incluso si la persona desobedece todas las demás mitzvot de la Torá, continúa teniendo la oportunidad de realizar teshuvá. “Ein davar omed lifnei hatshuvá”, nada se interpone a la teshuvá. Esto corrige, rectifica y repara todo el daño que alguien pudiese producir al cometer transgresiones.
¿Cómo expresa la Torá esta mitzvá de teshuvá? “Vehitvadú et jatatam Asher asú”, “y confesarán el pecado que han cometido”. De esta manera vemos que la Torá se refiere a la mitzvá de teshuvá y la define como una confesión, algo verbal, audible. ¿Y por qué es de esa manera? Pues se podría pensar que la teshuvá es primordialmente una función del corazón, el aceptar a Dios en su corazón, que tiene que arrepentirse de corazón por haber pecado, tiene que tomar una firme decisión en su corazón de que no lo volverá a hacerlo de nuevo. Entonces, todo está en el corazón. Pero la Torá dice que la realización práctica de la mitzvá es mediante la confesión, en la boca.

Números 4:21-7:89
Completando la cuenta de los Hijos de Israel hecha en el Desierto del Sinaí, un total de 8.580 Levitas hombres entre 30 y 50 años son contados para ser aquellos que transportarán el Tabernáculo.
Di-s enseña a Moshe las leyes de la Sotá, una esposa sospechada de haber sido infiel a su marido. También es dada la ley del Nazir que promete no beber vino, deja su cabello crecer y tiene prohibido impurificarse ritualmente con la impureza de un muerto. Aharón y sus descendientes, los Cohaním, son instruidos sobre cómo bendecir al pueblo de Israel.
Los líderes de las doce tribus de Israel traen sus ofrendas para la inauguración del altal. A pesar de que sus ofrendas son idénticas, cada una es traída en un día diferente y es individualmente descripta por la Torá.

Hay algo muy especial con respecto a los mandamientos, acerca del concepto de ordenar, mandar. Ordenar, en primer lugar implica reinado, ¿Quién da órdenes, quien manda? El rey, un rey ordena. Entonces, el hecho que toda la Torá sea un libro de preceptos, quiere decir que todo su propósito es el de revelar, manifestar el reino de Dios en la tierra, que Hashem Hu Hamelej, que Dios es el Rey, Él ordena y nosotros cumplimos, lo que Él ordena nosotros lo hacemos.

В начале занятия раввин делает общий обзор главы и предлагает участникам список тем, упомянутых в главе + пояснения, каким образом эта тема актуальна сегодня. Каждый участник озвучивает 3 наиболее интересующие его темы. Рейтинг интересующих тем формирует программу занятия.

Eine Quelle für den Gesang der Leviten
Jede der drei Familien der Leviten (des Stammes Levi), Gerschon, Kehat und Merari, hatte ihre eigene Aufgabe. Die Söhne von Kehat hatten den einzigartigen Job, den Aron HaKodesch (Bundeslade) zu tragen. Der Midrasch bemerkt, dass im Gegensatz zu den Söhnen von Gerschon und den Söhnen von Merari, die Torah die Familie des zweiten Sohnes von Levi nicht “die Söhne von Kehat” nennt, sondern den Ausdruck “die Söhne des HaKehati” [Bamidbar 4:34, 37] verwendet. Der Midrasch sagt, aufgrund der Tatsache, dass sie den Aron HaKodesch tragen mussten, G-tt Seinen Namen zu ihrem hinzufügte (der Buchstabe “Jud” nach Kehat und das “Hej” davor), damit sie nicht ausgelöscht werden. Sie hatten eine gefährliche Beschäftigung. Wenn ein Mensch einen unreinen Gedanken hatte, während er den Aron trug, lief er Gefahr, sein Leben zu verlieren. Das “Jud” und das “Hej” von G-ttes Namen wurden daher in die Nähe ihres Namens gefügt, um den Vers zu erfüllen, “ihre Seelen vor dem Tod zu retten” [Psalm/Tehillim 33:19].
Dies hatte einen schützenden Effekt. Es war eine “Segulah” (gutes Omen), doch es war nicht narrensicher. Es funktionierte nicht immer. Der Midrasch zitiert Raw Pedat im Namen von Raw Jossi ben Simra, dass als der Aron unterwegs war, zwei Feuerblitze von den Enden der Stangen herauskamen, um das Lager vor den Feinden zu schützen, die sie angreifen könnten. Doch manchmal waren die Träger des Aron selbst die Opfer dieser Feuerblitze – und ihre Anzahl schrumpfte durch die zerstörerische Kraft des Feuers. Es war eine gefährliche Beschäftigung.
Dessen bewusst, können wir vielleicht noch eine weitere Lehre von Chasal (unseren Weisen) verstehen. Sie wurden spezifisch angewiesen, den Aron auf ihren Schultern zu tragen. Der Talmud [Arachin 11a] zitiert den Vers, “den Kindern von Kehath aber gab er nichts (keine Wagen), weil sie ein heiliges Amt innehatten, auf ihren Schultern mussten sie es tragen.” [Bamidbar 7:9] – Die Worte „mussten sie es tragen“ sind offensichtlich überflüssig, denn wenn es auf ihren Schultern war, würden sie es ohnehin tragen! Der Talmud leitet daher aus dem Wort “jissa’u” (wörtlich: “mussten sie es tragen”) eine Nuance eines “Liedes” ab, wie wir sie im Ausdruck “se’u Simra” (erhebet ein Lied) finden [Tehillim 81:3] und leitet daraus ab, dass dies ein Hinweis der Torah auf die Tatsache ist, dass die Leviten den Tempeldienst mit Schirah (Gesang) begleiteten.
Normalerweise, wenn der Talmud oder Midrasch homiletische Exegesen (predigende Auslegungen) aus einem Vers ableitet, stimmt die Exegese irgendwie mit der einfachen Interpretation des Verses überein. Doch hier haben wir eine Situation, wo sich die Pschuto schel Mikra (einfache Lesung des Verses) auf EINE Angelegenheit bezieht (also das Tragen des Aron auf ihrer Schulter) und der Drasch (die Ableitung – also das Singen während des Tempeldienstes) scheinbar aus dem heiteren Himmel kommt. Wo ist der Zusammenhang? Wer würde jemals meinen, das Tragen des Aron stünde in jeglicher Beziehung zum Gesang während des Tempeldienstes?
Der Schemen HaTow (Band 4) schlägt einen Zusammenhang vor. Wann immer sich ein Mensch in einer gefährlichen Situation befindet, wo sein Leben auf des Messers Schneide ist – wenn er erfolgreich oder siegreich aus dieser Situation herauskommt, hat er ein aussergewöhnliches Gefühl der Freude und des Jubels. Wir finden das bei Soldaten, die in einer Schlacht waren. Wenn sie lebendig herauskommen und erfolgreich waren, empfinden sie ein Gefühl der Euphorie. Eben dieses Konzept kommt in der Mischna im Traktat Joma [7:4] vor: Nach Jom Kippur, machte der Kohen Gadol (Hohepriester) ein Fest für seine Freunde und Verwandten. Die Tatsache, dass er den Aufenthalt im Allerheiligsten des Tempels überlebt hatte, was mit grosser Gefahr einherging und wovon viele Hohepriester nicht lebendig hervorgegangen waren, war ein Grund zu feiern. Bis zum heutigen Tag, wird gemäss dem Schulchan Aruch [Ende der Vorschriften zu Jom Kippur, 624,5] nach Jom Kippur eine spezielle Festmahlzeit ausgerichtet – da man hoffentlich erfolgreich aus dem himmlischen Gericht hervorgegangen ist, dem wir während der Hohen Feiertage gegenüberstanden. Viele Menschen singen und tanzen gleich nach Abschluss des Ne’ilah-Gebets – aus eben diesem Grund. Wir waren im übertragenen Sinne “auf dem Schlachtfeld” und wir sind “in Frieden aus dieser Periode (der Heiligkeit) hervorgegangen”.
Die Kinder von Kehat fühlten sich in Lebensgefahr – mit der furchterregenden Aufgabe – den Aron zu tragen. Wenn sie diese Mission erfolgreich bestritten hatten, sangen sie, um die Emotion auszudrücken, die man empfindet, wenn man eine Gefahr überstanden hat. Somit sind die beiden Ausführungen – (1) sie trugen den Aron und (2) sie “erhoben” ein Lied (se’u simra) – nicht voneinander getrennt und keine zusammenhanglosen Ausführungen. Sie passen perfekt ineinander.

ההרצאה תעסוק בנסיבות ההיסטוריות המשבריות שהביאו לצמיחת השבתאות בשליש האחרון של המאה השבע-עשרה, ולצמיחת החסידות בשליש השני של המאה השמונה-עשרה ובמקומה המכריע של הקבלה המשיחית בהתפשטות תנועות אלה. הדיון יכלול הערכה חדשה על יחסי שבתאים ומתנגדים לאור המשיחיות הקבלית השבתאית והארה חדשה על יחסי חסידים ומתנגדים לאור החשד בשבתאות שהטיחו המתנגדים המחרימים בחסידים המוחרמים. עוד תוצע זווית ראייה חדשה על המניעים שעמדו מאחורי החרמות שהטילה ההנהגה הרבנית הנודעת בשם מתנגדים, על חוגי המקובלים-השבתאים והחסידים במאה השמונה-עשרה.

תקציר הרצאה
ההרצאה תעסוק בנסיבות ההיסטוריות המשבריות שהביאו לצמיחת השבתאות בשליש האחרון של המאה השבע-עשרה, ולצמיחת החסידות בשליש השני של המאה השמונה-עשרה ובמקומה המכריע של הקבלה המשיחית בהתפשטות תנועות אלה. הדיון יכלול הערכה חדשה על יחסי שבתאים ומתנגדים לאור המשיחיות הקבלית השבתאית והארה חדשה על יחסי חסידים ומתנגדים לאור החשד בשבתאות שהטיחו המתנגדים המחרימים בחסידים המוחרמים. עוד תוצע זווית ראייה חדשה על המניעים שעמדו מאחורי החרמות שהטילה ההנהגה הרבנית הנודעת בשם מתנגדים, על חוגי המקובלים-השבתאים והחסידים במאה השמונה-עשרה.

When describing the new dimension of Divine service brought about by the giving of the Torah, the Talmud1 states that Rav Yosef would hold a unique celebration, because:
If it were not for that day which caused [a radical change]… how many Yosefs would there be in the marketplace?
Rashi explains:
If it were not for the day on which I studied Torah and became uplifted… behold, there are many people in the street named Yosef. What difference would there be between me and them?
Rav Yosef was speaking in allegoric terms. The marketplace serves as an analogy for our material world, highlighting three aspects of our existence:
a) In the marketplace, there are many separate domains; each storekeeper has his own shop or place of business;
b) It is a place of intense activity, every individual eagerly striving to make a profit;
c) These profits are made through business transactions.
In the analogue: our world is characterized by plurality. Every element of existence is a separate entity, with no obvious connection to the others.2 It is, however, in this realm in contrast to the World to Come3 where the soul can truly advance and profit. Therefore, our worldly activities are charged with excitement and energy.4
The “business exchanges which generate profit” involve bringing entities from one domain to another; causing material entities which appear to be separate to join in entering G-d’s possession, as it were, by revealing their inner spiritual core.
A Lasting Change
Rav Yosef speaks of “Yosefs in the marketplace.” The name Yosef is associated with making an increase.5 Rav Yosef was saying that even before the giving of the Torah, there were “many Yosefs in the marketplace,” i.e., there were spiritual leaders able to generate the profit that results from bringing the material into contact with the spiritual. Nevertheless, the giving of the Torah made a difference.
Firstly, it established unity. Before the giving of the Torah, there were “many Yosefs,” i.e., the efforts of the different spiritual leaders, although significant, were diverse; each had a thrust of his own. The giving of the Torah, however, generates a higher light, one that brings about a synthesis between different approaches. It allows a level of oneness which is manifold and all-encompassing.
In addition, as reflected in the words of Rashi quoted previously, the giving of the Torah generated the potential for worldly entities to become “uplifted.” Before the giving of the Torah, although spiritual leaders were able to reveal G-dliness within the world, these revelations did not affect the world’s material substance.
For example, when Yaakov laid out the poplar, almond, and chestnut staves before Lavan’s flock,6 his actions evoked the same spiritual energies as are drawn down into the world through our performance of the mitzvah of tefillin.7 After this spiritual service was completed, however, the staves remained ordinary pieces of wood; Yaakov’s service left no lasting effect.8 In contrast, when a Jew puts on tefillin, the tefillinbecome sacred; the mitzvah imparts spirituality into their physical substance,9 and elevates them above the worldly plane.
Not Merely History
Although the radical change Rav Yosef described is associated with the giving of the Torah at Sinai, the intent is not merely to recount a historical event. For our nation’s past is not separate from its present. In that vein, on the verse, “these days are recalled and carried out,”10 the AriZal explains11 that when a holiday is recalled in the proper manner, it is “carried out” again, i.e., the spiritual influences which distinguished it are felt once more.12 Thus, each year, the celebration of the giving of the Torah on Shavuos brings a person to a deeper connection to G-d, and to a more elevated plane of oneness.
This is reflected in the name of the Torah reading of the Shabbos which follows Shavuos, Parshas Naso.13Naso means “lift up.” More particularly, the literal meaning of the verse14 with which the parshah begins is “Lift up the heads….”15 The head, the seat of intellect, is the most developed part of our physical bodies. And yet the giving of the Torah makes us able to “lift” our heads to a radically higher rung.
For when a person studies Torah, it is not merely a matter of man contemplating G-d with mortal eyes. Instead, man is assimilating G-d’s wisdom into his thought processes. And the knowledge of the Divine which a person thus gains remains within him, changing and elevating his way of thinking.16
Extending the Connection
A question can, however, be raised: The command to “lift up the heads” was given as part of the charge to count the Levites. The objects of the command which begins our Torah reading are “the descendants of Gershon” the Levites charged with carrying the curtains which covered the Sanctuary. It was the descendants of Kehos who were responsible for the ark which contained the Tablets of the Ten Commandments, and the menorah, which are both associated with Torah, and the command to count themwas mentioned in the previous Torah reading, Parshas Bamidbar.17 If the intent ofParshas Naso is to highlight the elevating effect of Torah study, why is the charge associated with the descendants of Gershon?
The answer is that Torah study should not remain an isolated spiritual activity. Instead, it should elevate one’s service of prayer (the spiritual activity associated with the descendants of Gershon) and indeed, every aspect of one’s conduct. Moreover, when a person has raised his spiritual level in this fashion, he has the ability to elevate the world around him, bringing it to a deeper level of connection with G-d.
This is reflected in the conclusion of the Torah reading, which describes the final stages of the dedication of the Sanctuary. For the purpose of the Sanctuary was to spread holiness throughout the world, bringing its material dimensions closer to G-d through the sacrificial offerings.18
Applying these lessons dedicating ourselves to Torah study, and using that study to elevate our conduct and our environment will hasten the coming of the time when mankind and the world at large will reach its ultimate peak: “The world will be filled with the knowledge of G-d as the waters cover the ocean bed.”19
Moses took the wagons and the oxen and gave them to the Levites… according to their workload… But to the Kehos family he did not give any; for theirs was [the most] holy work, they bore it on their shoulders…(7:6-9)
Every year, Reb Shlomo ‘the Yellow’, the melamed of Nevel, would walk to Lubavitch to spend the Simchat Torah festival with his rebbe, Rabbi Sholom DovBer. Even in his later years when his strength had failed him, he refused to climb onto a wagon for even a minute; every step of the way was taken on his own two feet. “In my Lubavitch,” Reb Shlomo maintained, “no horse will take part.”
Once he said: “There will come a time when I shall stand before the heavenly court. What will I have to show for myself? What have I done with the years which have been granted me? We both know that the life of Reb Shmuel the melamedleaves much to be desired.
“But there is one thing that no one can take from me. My Lubavitch. Every year I came to the Rebbe. But imagine that when I present my Lubavitch before the heavenly court, along comes a horse claiming partnership; it was he, after all, who schlepped me to Lubavitch. The truth is, I can probably win my case against the horse, but I have no desire to have it out with a horse over my trips to the Rebbe. No horse will be involved in my Lubavitch!”
CHASSIDIC DIMENSION: Shabbos – “Before and After” (Naso)
Shabbos — “Before and After”The Torah portion Naso is commonly read on the Shabbos following Shavuos. Since the festivals are related to the Torah portions in whose time they fall,1 it is understandable that within Naso there is an allusion to the special qualities of this Shabbos.
What is special about this Shabbos; where is it alluded to in the portion of Naso ?
Before G-d gave the Torah at Mattan Torah , there was a “rift” between Heaven and earth: “Those who were on high could not descend below; those who were below could not ascend on high.”2Mattan Torah healed this rift; Heaven and earth could then be united. Thus, the mitzvos performed before Mattan Torah lacked the quality of themitzvos performed afterwards.3
The same holds true for the commandment of Shabbos. Although the Jews observed Shabbos even before Mattan Torah ,4 their observance then could not compare to their observance once the Torah was given.
Since all past events are “reawakened” at the time of year during which they first occurred,5 we understand that the Shabbos following Shavuos is an echo of the firstShabbos after Shavuos , to wit: it is the first complete Shabbos observed as a result ofMattan Torah.
Before Mattan Torah , “on high” had yet to descend “below,” and the performance ofmitzvos was limited by a person’s individual capacity. As a result, it was impossible to infuse the objects with which one performed mitzvos with the infinity of holiness.
When G-d gave the Torah to the world, the mitzvos emanated from His essence. “On High descended below” and man became able to perform mitzvos with G-d-givenpower. Consequently, the physical objects used in the performance of mitzvosthemselves become G-dly — “below ascends on High.”
This is particularly germane to Shabbos: The intrinsic quality of Shabbos — even prior to Mattan Torah — is loftier than creation, for Shabbos commemorates the cessation of creative labor. This is why a Jew is granted on Shabbos “a simple love for G-d that transcends intellect.” This love is much loftier than the rational weekday love that grows from toil and labor.6
This higher degree of love transforms a person and his animal soul, so that he ceases to desire those things he desires during the rest of the week.
Thus, Shabbos is intrinsically lofty in two aspects: Shabbos is itself “on high,” i.e., Shabbos is illumined by a degree of holiness that cannot be attained through man’s service alone; and with regard to “below,” on Shabbos even the animal soul is transformed.
These inherent qualities notwithstanding — qualities remarkably similar to the achievement of Mattan Torah — there is still no comparison between the sanctity of Shabbos before Mattan Torah and the sanctity it achieves afterwards.
This unique quality, mirrored every year in the Shabbos following Shavuos, is alluded to in the portion of Naso, which states at the outset: “Count Gershon’s descendants….7 “
The name Gershon is etymologically related8 both to the bringing out of produce9 — in spiritual terms, revealing one’s latent love for G-d — and to the “chasing away” of evil.10 These two actions bear a remarkable similarity to what transpires on Shabbos.

G-d Makes Himself Heard
The Torah portion Naso concludes by relating that when Moshe would enter theMishkan , he would hear G-d’s voice emanating from between the two Keruvim. The portion concludes by stating once again: “Thus would G-d speak to him.”11
Rashi12 explains that the verse reiterates “Thus would G-d speak to him ,” to inform us that although Aharon may have been in the Mishkan at the time, only Moshe would hear G-d’s voice.
This was no ordinary occurrence, for as Rashi goes on to say, G-d’s voice was as powerful then as it was when it spoke at Sinai. Rather, it was a miracle that in theMishkan only Moshe would hear it.
This gives rise to the following question: Since G-d’s voice was so powerful, why did Moshe have to enter the Mishkan at all? And if G-d desired that only Moshe hear Him, He could have done so, just as within the Mishkan only Moshe heard Him speak.
Rashi concludes by stating that “when the voice reached the entrance of the Mishkan it would cease, and would not emanate outside the Mishkan.” Thus, in order for Moshe to hear G-d speaking, it was necessary that he be within the Mishkan.
But this, too, must be understood: Since by right the voice should have been heard outside the Mishkan , why did it stop at the entrance, thus compelling Moshe to enter in order to hear it?
This will be understood in light of Rashi ’s explanation that G-d’s voice was “the same voice that spoke to him at Sinai.”
We find that “the voice that spoke to him at Sinai” also was subject to cessation, albeit not a cessation in space (as was the case with the voice in the Mishkan), but a cessation in time. For after Mattan Torah , “when the ram’s horn sounded a long blast,”13 the “Divine Presence departed and the voice ceased.”14
The reason for the cessation of the voice is clear: Were it to have continued followingMattan Torah it would have precluded Divine service predicated on man’s freedom of choice; when G-d’s mighty voice in its full glory proclaims “I am G-d your L-rd,”15 there is no room for choosing anything other than G-d’s will.
Just as this is so regarding the cessation of the voice in time, it is true with regard to G-d’s voice ceasing in space — at the entrance of the Mishkan.
Since this voice was “the [very same] voice that spoke to him at Sinai” — with the same degree of revelation and sanctity — it is understandable that were it to have been drawn down on an ongoing basis outside the Mishkan , then the whole world would have automatically been transformed into a Mishkan , and once again the ability to freely choose to serve G-d would have been thwarted.
Moreover, “G-d earnestly desired to have a dwelling place [specifically] in thenethermost level”16 — in the crass physical world. It was in such a world that G-d desired that His voice be drawn down and revealed as man’s service transformed this world into a dwelling for Him.
Were this world to be constantly inundated by G-d’s voice, then it would neither be a lowly world, nor would man be needed to accomplish its transformation, since it would be G-dly in its own right.
There is a lesson here: We should not be satisfied with enclosing ourselves in our own private Mishkan of Torah study, where G-d’s voice is constantly heard, and neglecting the rest of the world. Rather, man’s main service is to let the world outside the Mishkan know that which was revealed, thereby transforming the planet into a dwelling place for G-d.

It’s been four years since Nachas released his first single and since that time, the smooth voiced singer has been churning out one hit single after another, slowly but surely building a base of die-hard music fans, eager to hear more from one of Jewish music’s brightest rising stars. After numerous live concert appearances, five blockbuster music videos and countless hours in the recording studio, Nachas’ highly anticipated debut album, Bischar Zeh, is ready to roll, capturing the singer’s trademark energy and enthusiasm in fourteen fabulous songs.
Bischar Zeh is vintage Nachas, bursting with different musical genres, giving him the ability to display his incredible versatility in each and every track. In an effort to raise both funds and awareness for two Israeli young men who are still being held in a Japanese prison almost three years after unknowingly bringing drugs into the country, Danny Finkleman, producer of the Unity project to benefit Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, has created another stunning music video, this one featuring two of the top names in Jewish music, superstars Shloime Daskal and Avraham Fried.
While filming in Japan, Daskal and Finkelman had the opportunity to spend thirty minutes with each of the two young men. Meeting them and spending time at the Chiba Detention Center left Daskal and Finkelman feeling even more inspired than ever to do whatever they could to help the pair.

Olmert was convicted of corruption back in March. The 69-year-old is already facing a six-year prison sentence in a separate corruption case which is currently the subject of an appeal to the supreme court. Olmert’s lawyers say they’ll also appeal the new verdict. The ex-premier was acquitted of a series of corruption charges three years ago. He was sent for re-trial after his former office manager offered tape recordings of alleged conversations with Olmert about receiving cash. Judges say Olmert had used the money for personal reasons without reporting it.

Obama Calls Himself ‘Honorary Member’ Of The Jewish Faith

Speaking on Jewish American Heritage Month at the Adas Israel Congregation in Washington, D.C., this morning, President Barack Obama noted that one member of the congregation had once called him “the first Jewish president” and declared that his commitment to Israel’s security is “unshakeable.” “Earlier this week, I was actually interviewed by one of your members, Jeff Goldberg,” said Obama. “And Jeff reminded me that he once called me ‘the first Jewish President.’ Now, since some people still seem to be wondering about my faith, I should make clear this was an honorary title. But I was flattered.”
Goldberg, a writer for The Atlantic, interviewed Obama for that publication earlier this week. “And as an honorary member of the tribe, not to mention somebody who’s hosted seven White House Seders and been advised by, and been advised by, two Jewish chiefs of staff, I can also proudly say that I’m getting a little bit of the hang of the lingo,” said Obama. “But I will not use any of the Yiddish-isms that Rahm Emanuel taught me because I want to be invited back. Let’s just say he had some creative new synonyms for ‘Shalom.’”
Later in the speech, the president explained his “unshakeable” support for Israel’s security. “It’s particularly important to remember now, given the tumult that is taking place in so many corners of the globe, in one of the world’s most dangerous neighborhoods, those shared values compel us to reaffirm that our enduring friendship with the people of Israel and our unbreakable bonds with the state of Israel–that those bonds, that friendship cannot be broken,” said Obama. “Those values compel us to say that our commitment to Israel’s security, and my commitment to Israel’s security is and always will be unshakeable.
“And I’ve said this before: It would be a moral failing on the part of the U.S. government and the American people, it would be a moral failing on my part if we did not stand up firmly, steadfastly not just on behalf of Israel’s right to exist, but its right to thrive and prosper,” said Obama. “Because it would ignore the history that brought the state of Israel about. It would ignore the struggle that’s taken place through millennia to try to affirm the kinds of values that say everybody has a place, everybody has rights, everybody is a child of God.”

Robert Wistrich addresses Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism
Prof. Robert Wistrich, Head of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism, one of the participants and speakers at the 5th Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism, died several days later in Rome, on May 19, after suffering a heart attack. He was scheduled to address the Italian Senate on the rise of antisemitism in Europe. We mourn his passing.
Prof. Robert Wistrich was the Neuberger chair for Modern European History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has been Head of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism 2002-2015. In 2013 he was awarded a prize for Lifetime Achievement by the New-York based Journal for the Study of Antisemitism which described him “as the leading scholar in the field of antisemitism study today”. Among his books are: Hitler and the Holocaust (Random House, 2001), which has been translated into 25 language. His 1,200 page book A Lethal Obsession: Antisemitism from Antiquity to the Global Jihad, appeared in 2010, and From Ambivalence to Betrayal: The Left, the Jews and Israel was published in 2012.
The Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism (GFCA) is the premier biennial gathering for assessing the state of Antisemitism globally, and formulating effective forms of societal and governmental response. The GFCA is an active coalition of public figures, political leaders, heads of civil society, clergy, journalists, diplomats, educators and concerned citizens dedicated to the advance of tolerance towards the other in public life and the defeat of Antisemitism and other forms of racial and ethnic hatred. The Forum serves as an important meeting place for exchange of knowledge and for formulating the global work plan for combating Antisemitism.

Sheikh Dr. Usama Hasan, Senior Researcher in Islamic Studies at the Quilliam Foundation (the world’s first counter-extremism think-tank) is a scientist and religious scholar, holding traditional certifications and MA, MSc and PhD degrees (Cambridge and London). Served as an imam for 30 yrs in UK mosques, participated in interfaith dialogue and action for the past 15 yrs, and worked closely with the UK Board of Deputies of British Jews. Patron and/or trustee of the Israeli-Palestinian Parents’ Circle, UK (Bereaved Families’ Forum), the UK Forum for the Discussion of Israel and Palestine (FODIP) and One Voice Europe (OVE), who campaign for a two-state solution. American Israel Supporters Tell Pope: Stay Out of Politics

After Pope Francis moved to recognize a Palestinian state, some gung-ho defenders of Israel suggested the pontiff should stick to preaching and stay out of politics. Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, a hawkish defender of Israel, said “I’m disappointed. The Pope is legitimizing a Palestinian state without requiring those who get recognition to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.” It wasn’t just Duncan. Several House conservatives seemed exasperated that Francis, who will address Congress this fall, approved the Vatican’s recognition of Palestine as a state. On Wednesday, critics said Rome needs to leave the question of Palestinian statehood to be sorted out in the Middle East. Others were frustrated that the pontiff would recognize a place that’s an avowed enemy of a U.S. ally like Israel.
Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas said, “I’m surprised that the pope would recognize Palestine when they’re still haters who want to eliminate Israel off the map and don’t recognize Israel. The Pope is the head of his religion, and he makes those calls for himself, but I represent 700,000 people from East Texas and a vast majority agree with me.”

The Vatican’s decision to recognize the state of Palestine in a treaty for the first time has drawn a stern response from Israel, but it may usher in a freer debate in Europe about how to proceed on the vexed Palestinian question.
The Holy See has referred to Palestine since 2012, but the treaty concluded on Wednesday, which covers the Church’s activities in areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority, marks a more formal recognition, which Vatican officials said they hoped would benefit Israeli-Palestinian ties in time.
An Israeli foreign ministry official described the Vatican’s move as a “disappointment” and indicated that it may lead to reprisals, although he did not say of what kind.
The Vatican, increasingly proactive in foreign policy under Pope Francis, is far from the only state to have recognized Palestine — 135 members of the United Nations already do so, nearly 70 percent of the total. By comparison, 160 of the UN’s 193 members recognize Israel.

L’esplanade du Kotel, (le mur occidental), n’est encore qu’une ruelle coincée entre les maisons insalubres des quartiers juif et arabe. La Chorale populaire juive auprès de l’Union – Union des Juifs pour la Résistance et l’Entraide (UJRE) est née dans les années 1920 à Paris, au sein de la Kultur Lige, une organisation juive de gauche qui visait à organiser la vie culturelle des immigrants juifs d’Europe de l’est. L’U.J.R.E. était une organisation juive résistance créée en 1943 et communiste.
Eva Golgevit raconte, dans une conférence publiée dans son livre Ne pleurez pas, mes fils… (Éd. Le Manuscrit / FMS – 2010), qu’elle a rejoint la chorale dans l’après-guerre, au retour de sa déportation à Auschwitz, alors dirigée par Ilya Holodenko, qui avait pris la suite d’Arié Kaufman. Si la chorale a cessé de se produire en 1981, Jean Golgevit, le fils d’Eva, a repris le flambeau et dirige aujourd’hui sa propre chorale.
La chanson « Zhumen binen » (Les abeilles) est, selon Itzik Gottesman, une chanson soviétique sur les apiculteurs juifs ! Il précise aussi, sur le fantastique blog « Yiddish Song of the Week », où on peut trouver d’autres versions de cette chanson, que l’auteur Emmanuel Kazakevitch (1913 – 1962) était connu pour ses liens avec le Birobidjan, état juif créé par Staline dans les années 1920. La musique est le fruit du compositeur soviétique prolifique Leyb (Lev) Yampolsky. La chanson aurait été écrite, toujours selon I. Gottesman, pour la pièce de Kazakevitch Milkh un honik (Lait et miel) en 1938 et jouée par la troupe du GOSET de Birobidjan en 1940.
Le refrain nous dit :
« Oy, sara rakhves, keyn eyn-hore,
S’iz di erd mit zaft fargosn
Makhn honik iz gevorn
Shoyn a yidishe parnose. »
« Oh, quelle richesse, au loin le mauvais œil !

Elle est entrée dans une boutique de téléphonie sur le boulevard Voltaire. Elle a fait mine de s’intéresser aux nouveaux portables, a obtenu le numéro du vendeur et s’en est allée. Elle l’a rappelé dès le lendemain, lui a dit qu’elle voulait le revoir. Ilan ne s’est pas méfié. Il avait vingt-trois ans, la vie devant lui…
Comment pouvait-il se douter qu’en rejoignant cette jolie fille dans un café de la porte d’Orléans, il avait rendez-vous avec la mort ?
Le vendredi 20 janvier 2006, Ilan Halimi, choisi par le gang des Barbares parce qu’il était juif, est enlevé et conduit dans un appartement de Bagneux. Il y sera séquestré et torturé pendant trois semaines avant d’être jeté dans un bois par ses bourreaux. Retrouvé gisant nu le long d’une voie de chemin de fer à Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, il ne survivra pas à son calvaire.
Dans ce film, Ruth Halimi revient sur ces 24 jours de cauchemar. 24 jours au cours desquels elle aura reçu, elle et son mari, Didier, plus de six cents appels, des demandes de rançon dont le montant ne cessera de changer, des insultes, des menaces, des photos de son fils supplicié… 24 jours d’angoisse de toute une famille, contrainte de garder le silence pour laisser travailler la police criminelle.
Mais le 36 Quai des Orfèvres ne sait pas à quels individus il a affaire. Personne ne mesure la haine antisémite qui habite les ravisseurs, et ne s’imagine qu’Ilan allait perdre la vie

Une yechiva est établie par Ernest Weill à Neudorf (Strasbourg), en 19331. Dirigée par le Rabbin Simcha Wasserman, fils de l’éminent talmudiste Elchonon Wasserman, elle est alors la seule yechiva de France. En 1938, le Rabbin Wasserman émigre aux États-Unis, laissant la direction de la Yeshiva de Neudorf à Yitzchak Chaikin, disciple du Chofetz Chaim et d’Elchonon Wasserman, fraichement débarqué. Il est bientôt déporté en Allemagne, et la yechiva doit fermer ses portes en 1939 jusqu’à la fin de la seconde Guerre mondiale.
Son collège académique décide de rouvrir ses portes après la guerre à Aix-les-Bains, où elle s’établit définitivement. Elle est toujours dirigée par le rabbin Yitzchak Chaikin1, revenu de captivité et accueille d’ailleurs de nombreux rescapés de la Shoah :
La Yeshiva Chachmei Tzorfas [la Yechiva des Sages de France] est déjà une réalité – pas simplement un bâtiment élégant, mais un palais. Environ une centaine de jeunes trouveront leur place ici. À présent de nombreux garçons venant de Buchenwald et de Dachau sont inscrits. La yeshiva attend leur arrivée. Le premier Rosh Hayeshiva (doyen) est déjà ici: le Rabbin Chaikin, un ancien étudiant de la Yeshiva de Radin. Lui aussi vient juste de rentrer de captivité [en Allemagne].2
Elle est dirigée aujourd’hui par le Rabbin Yits’hak Weill.

Rabbi Meïr baal Haness ou Baal Ness (hébreu : רבי מאיר בעל הנס « Rabbi Meïr le Miraculeux », acronyme Rambaha”n ou Ramba”n) est un faiseur de miracles dont la tombe fait l’objet d’un pèlerinage annuel. Son nom est également associé à des caisses de bienfaisance destinées aux Juifs nécessiteux résidant en terre d’Israël.
Identifié par la croyance populaire à Rabbi Meïr, il semble cependant issu d’une confusion entre ce Sage et un ou plusieurs homonymes. Photo by Wikipedia
